Back in January we told you about a new podcast starting up: the Most POPular Podcast . Well, hosts Amanda Bacchi and Dr Paul Mason have been very productive and they are already up to their 13th episode! While most of their podcasts have been of a general pop culture nature, episode 13 will be of particular interest to Phantom phans - it's all about Kid Phantom. President Kennedy's Mission, the original comic book series currently being produced by Hermes Press, is being dramatically shortened. When Hermes introduced the new story in March 2017, it was announced as an "all-new Phantastic adventure [written by] veteran Phantom script writer Ron Goulart [together with] with artist Sean Joyce", and specifically, a "five book story arc". Unfortunately, these plans have changed - there will now only be three books in the story. This week, as he concluded his YouTube video promoting Sundays Volume 4, publisher Dan Herman dropped the news, saying "Phantom #2 the [President Kennedy's Mission] comic book has been printed and will be in stores. Phantom #3 is being coloured and will be out shortly. Then the whole story will be collected into a graphic novel." ChronicleChamber has since confirmed with Managing Editor at Hermes Press Eileen Sabrina Herman, who told us that "we had to cut the comic to three issues. Our sales for the comic are as such that doing a 5 story arc would not work for us financially, unfortunately." This will be disappointing for phans, but speaks simply to the realities that if we do not buy Phantom products, new ones will not get made. Looking optimistically at the situation, Dan did say in the video that instead of the standard 20 page comics they have been producing, #3 will be almost 30 pages long. Also, we will now not have to wait as long for the trade paperback collection of the story, and Hermes is well known for the quality of their TPBs. However, the simple fact is that what was probably going to be around a 100 page story will now only be approximately a 70 page story. On the bright side Hermes' reprints of the Avon Phantom novels, the continuation of which which also seemed under threat late last year, look to be in the full swing of production. In the video, Dan says that #5 and #6 have just been printed, with #7 and #8 going to the printer next week. However, the shortening of the President Kennedy's Mission series is clear proof that phans cannot just expect that these Avon reprints will continue without some effort on our part. "Remember you have to buy them or we can't print them, because we have to have adequate sales to justify printing them," Dan reminds us. Hermes Press are aiming to have between two and four more Avon volumes out before then end of 2018, which may well mean that a run from 1-12 may be available for your Christmas advent calendar this year. In a promo YouTube video this week, Hermes Press publisher Dan Herman announced that their latest anthology collection, Phantom Sundays Volume 4 (1950-1953), is printed and ready for release. Dan explains a few details about the book, and some interesting historical oddities about the comic strip. In the first first few minutes of the clip, Dan clarifies what is often a hot point of discussion among phans, namely the continuity among Daily and Sunday strips. He explains that from 1949 through to early 1950, Lee Falk wrote the Daily and the Sunday stories as a single continuity - these stories are presented in Hermes' Daily collections Volumes 9 & 10. From 1950, the Sundays reverted to their own continuity and could once more be read as standalone stories. These are the stories that are picked up in Sundays Volume 4, and explains the gap since the publication of Hermes' Sundays Vol 3 (1945-1949), which has now sold out. Dan explains in some detail the amount of work that goes into re-producing the old newspaper strips into the high-quality publication that Hermes prides itself on. It truly is impressive that these books are recreated simply from cut-out Sunday strips that were gathered by collectors as they were printed in the early 1950's, and Dan gives a very special and grateful shoutout to Jeff Schwarz for his contributions in this area. Unusually, Sundays Volume 4 features a couple of stories that are partially colour and partially black and white, which is explained in full by Dan in the video. The Phantom is HUGE in India which I think we all know. So big that Kevin Patrick focused on it with his thesis and subsequent book, and big enough for Glenn Ford from Frew to publically mention on his podcast interview that he wants to target the area with their Frew comics. The Indrajal Comic Publication series saw over 400 issues published over a 20 year period and there has been at least another 300 comics printed and published in various languages since the 1970's. India has such a rich history Indian phans are always finding new comics and now recently even new languages the chracter has been published in. Indrajal published their comics in 10 different Indian Languages including English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Arabic, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu. I personally do not have any from Telugu and there are some phans who question whether it is actually published in that language, but that's for another article. Diamond Comics Digest have also published their comic in three languages: English, Hindi and Bengali ... or so we thought. Ajay Kumar Misra, who is known to a lot of collectors, recently discovered a comic printed in a fourth language called Assamese which is an Eastern Indo-Aryan dialect spoken mainly in the Indian state of Assam, where it is an official language. Ajay and a few other local Indian collectors they have confirmed it is Assamese which is very similar in script style as Bengali, which you can see with the attached photos. We have also managed to find issue #54, #55 & #57. You will note no #56 but the likelihood is that it also exists. A little like the Kid Phantom himself... Suddenly, mysteriously, sometimes clumsily - in the last week the Kid Phantom website has gone live! While the web address was first promoted in Kid Phantom #3, and printed on the back of the Kid Phantom pin freebie that came with that edition, eager visitors to the site were greeted with a 'Coming soon' message. Now though - the site is live! The first thing an experienced Phantom websurfer will notice is the similarity to the Phanfare site, which makes sense, speaking to the Glenn Ford fingerprints that are naturally all over both sites. The Home page features the splash page from issue #3, as well as a promising menu bar and the obligatory social media feed. The Kid Phantom facebook page and illustrator Dr Paul Mason's Instagram are featured in that space. The Phact-files tab links to the introductory images that featured on the splash page of Kid Phantom #1 - with a special extra unseen Bandar bonus. Comix, meanwhile, shows images of the comic books released so far, contains sample pages of the interior art work, and links to the Frew website for interested buyers. Character profiles of the key characters revealed in the first three books can be found under Characters. So far these only include Kid Phantom (Kit himself), his mum and dad (Phantom 20), and Guran, but this will certainly be the place to find out more about all the characters that will appear on the freebie pins that will be included in the next 5 comics. Downloads offers up a free A3 size pdf copy of the Kid Phantom poster which can be printed at home, work or your local print shop, and Shop sends you straight to Frew's Kid Phantom products, including the signed poster, mask, stickers and Universe card. At the moment, the tabs that hold a lot of potential - Games and Art Class - lead to empty pages, but the fact that they are included is very promising and a very exciting sign of things to come. At the minute, the Kid Phantom site is clearly a work in progress and certainly set up for mums and dads more than the children that Frew are hoping will fall in love with the product. However, the menu shows clear intent of targeting the younger phans who, for now, can keep checking back for updates. Irish publisher Lightning Strike Comic Books are about to launch their third foray into the Phantom universe, and they're going bigger and better than ever. Lightning Strike are best known to Phantom phans for the two oneshot Phantom books they have released: 2016's 80th Anniversary special Tales of the Ghost Who Walks, and the standalone story Scarlet Sapphire, published in 2017. Now co-publisher Eoin McAulley is proud to announce that in 2018, they will be taking it to the next level. In the latest episode of X-Band - The Phantom Podcast, Eoin explained: "In 2016 the 80th Anniversary special, people would've read never before seen authors and artists, which is very much in the DNA of Lightning Strike as an Indi publisher. In 2017 we published Scarlet Sapphire which is the most professional product that we've ever made, and that is where we set the standard for ourselves going forward. We've really ramped up a level. In 2018, we'll be producing a mini-series, which we hope will launch us into an on-going series ... every year. A quarterly on-going series." This means that in 2018, the little Irish publisher will release four issues of The Phantom; the license from King Features Syndicate allows for Ireland and UK distribution of four 24 page issues in the twelve month period. Eoin explained that current plans involve each issue featuring a 22 page main story, with a two page vignette to be added at the end of each issue. These short narratives are likely to be created in a non-traditional Phantom style, and will be produced by new, unpublished artists and writers - much like those gathered in the Tales of the Ghost Who Walks anthology. The Lightning Strike team are currently throwing all sorts of ideas around in this space, including perhaps a surprising offer to an Australian creative team. Eoin confirmed that the main stories would be new stories, and perhaps even connecting stories. While Lightning Strike's history would lend them to be standalone, self-contained stories, there is a train of thought that they should also be challenging themselves to begin world-building their own Phantom interpretation. The goal is to make their Phantomverse close enough to be interpreted into phans' own canons, but also able to be regarded as separate. Some elements will be familiar, but others less so. There are no plans to feature the twins (Kit and Heloise) in their stories, for instance. Diana, meanwhile, will be a Senator rather than the more familiar UN Human Rights officer. Diana in particular was given a really strong interpretation in Scarlet Sapphire, which Eoin tells us "will feature more and more in future issues". It seems that there will be some sort of spine or connection between stories, but they will also easily be able to be read as standalones. So far as creative teams go, Eoin is thrilled with who they have begun to assemble. "We have approached Alex Saviuk to illustrate one of the 4 issues, which has been written by David Williams [also editor on the series]. We're really excited to have Alex on board. Mike Collins [Moonstone] is really interested, and may be collaborating with a Scandinavian colleague." One potential cover artist is Oisin Roche, who has done some other Lightning Strike covers in the past. He excels in oil paintings, as you can see from the link - his work is stunning. Eoin has talked to Oisin about creating covers that would be similar to those produced by Gold Key through the mid-1960's. With the first two stories planned out, the team is looking to kick off production as soon as possible, and probably are well on the way by the time you are reading this. They are aiming to have the books on shelves well and truly by August and the Dublin Comic Con: "We would love to have at least one if not two issues available at the Con." Because they are using different creative teams for the first two books, they are able to have both of them in production simultaneously. "We could have a preview booklet available by March, and a production schedule locked in. We should be [releasing a book] approximately every three months, give or take teething issues given this is the first time Lightning Strike have ever committed to a mini-series like this." To further complement their efforts, Lightning Strike are also developing plans to distribute Frew's own Kid Phantom to the Irish and UK audience, alternating release of the popular children's comic and their own quarterly mini-series. Eoin has placed an order of "enough to carry over and stock shelves and be present at shows ... and see what traction we can get with it." While some phans may just be excited about the prospect about four new Phantom comics coming out in 2018, the true significance of this announcement might be lost on some, but certainly not on Eoin: "This is going to be, to my knowledge, the first ever on-going licensed comic book superhero comic produced here in Ireland, [as opposed to] Indi, creator owned comics. It's going to be a watershed moment for the community and the industry here." International phans will be able to order direct through Irish retailers Big Bang Comics or Dublin City Comics, but Eoin is also looking into other international distribution options. A huge and stunning new Phantom sculpture has been unveiled in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. The Phantom totem stands on the escarpment in the Amphitheatre Garden on the south side at the Leuralla NSW Toy and Railway Museum in Leura. From this vantage point, the impressive 5 metre tall Phantom surveys the vast valley below, looking across to Mount Solitary, not far from the famous Three Sisters. The totem has been a long time coming, first envisaged many years ago by Peter Kingston, artist and co-curator of the celebrated Phantom Art Show. The design is instantly familiar as a Kingston work, and of course is based on one of his creations. Peter has made many Phantom totems and marquettes on a small scale. Some of these traveled with the Art Show, while another is on display at the Museum and was used as the reference all along. The immense sculpture was actually built by Russell Hunt, in his own words "the maintenance guy" at the Museum. The build started about a year ago, but had to be squeezed in around general property maintenance. Leuralla's owner Clive Evatt financed the project as a complimentary piece to the 5m Boofhead and Olive Oyl statues that were installed at the site over 10 years ago. The Phantom is, however, placed much closer to the escarpment. "At 5 metres tall and in a hi-wind area we had to create a substantial frame to anchor him to the escarpment. A fully welded steel frame sunk into a slab of concrete 1.5 metres deep and weighing 2 Tonnes should do the job!" says Russell. At Peter's insistance the Phantom Totem was made using Lee Falk's original colour scheme of grey - "The Grey Ghost". While Russell did the complete build - groundwork, frame, cut-out of the shape and and majority of the paintwork - Peter himself spent over an hour touching up the face and applying other finishing touches. Russell tells us, "It was to be ready to be erected in August but had to be put on hold as the Amphitheatre site was being used in a TV show The Bachelorette and we wanted it to be kept a secret until finished." [Coincidentally, one of the bachelors in that season of the reality show was Apollo, who wore a very distinctive Skull ring...] It will be interesting to hear what Leura locals make of the huge Phantom looking out over their valley, but as Russell says, "as there are two other totems on the site most are used to this and hopefully see it as an Art installation." Interestingly, Russell also tells us that "Devil will be a project over the coming winter when the work schedule at Leuralla is less hectic" so a fourth totem is on certainly the cards. Word of the installation must have spread to the Deep Woods, as the Phantom himself attended the grand unveiling, seen in the photo below with Leuralla owner Clive Evatt. Both Peter and Russell are confident that the Totem will be around for a very long time, with perhaps bushfires the only real risk to the structure. With much fanfare on their social media pages and a very flash promo video, Finnish clothing label Billebeino have launched a new range of officially licensed Phantom themed clothing. There are over a dozen items for phans to drool over, all emblazoned with Phantom iconography in multiple places, often including front and back. The images available from the launch at Casino Helsinki on Friday 2nd February suggest it was an incredible evening. Using the overlay of their brick logo, Billebeino have certainly found a way to put a new slant on the images we have seen from the King Features style guide for the last few years now. For all that, some phans may find the prices a little on the expensive side. Last week some eagle eyed phans may have seen news that Dolmen Publishing over in Spain will be picking up a Phantom License and republishing some classic Phantom stories. Unlike Hermes and Serbia and like their Turkish counterparts they will be starting off with Sy Barry's reign in 1961. Majority of these stories have not been seen in Spain for almost 40 years. In fact apart from a hardcover reprint of stories in 2005, Spain hasn't seen any Phantom publications since the mid 1990's which is a whole generation who have missed out on the Phantom. It is good to see the Phantom back! Dolmen Publishing have a rich history of publishing classic strip heroes like Prince Valiant, Flash Gordon and Johnny Hazard. For the Mandrake phans, they will also be publishing Mandrake at the same time. The first book will be Hardcover and 200 pages with 186 of comics alone with two or three strips per page and sold for a reasonable 30 euros (roughly $50AU). Plans from the editor is that they will release 2-3 per year. No word yet on if it will be in landscape format like Hermes or on the cover art but when we do know more, so will you. All material will be translated with no editing but some restoring where needed from KFS archives which will I assume will be similar format that we have seen from Jim Shepherd's Frew days. Also which is exciting for the purists that if the Sy Barry releases are popular they will go back to the Ray Moore Dailies. As we get more information from the publisher and if available to purchase for the completists, we will publish here. While we are talking about new publishers we have been informed by our latest podcast guest of ANOTHER new publisher that has not seen the Phantom published in their country also since the mid to late 1990's. Up-and-coming Phantom artist Jamie Johnson has taken the next step in becoming a household name among Phantom phans. With increasingly regular gigs as a Frew cover artist through 2016 and 2017, and the news of a full length story he is drawing for Frew to be published mid-2018, Jamie really is rising to prominence in the Australian Phantom phan community. He has become known for his wraparound covers (the stunning 22nd Phantom triptych/trilogy, anyone?) and it's safe to say we will be seeing more of these in 2018. And now he has launched a new website devoted to selling his artwork. Jamie has produced some wonderful Wonder Woman, Judge Dredd and Batman pieces, all of which is also showcased on the site, but there's no doubt that the largest portion of the site right now is devoted to The Phantom. Phantom items for sale include his renowned Frew sketch covers, layout work, concept art, preliminary covers and inkings. Jamie is also offering signed, remarked copies of his published Phantom comics (Frew and Hermes Press), as well as Pholio prints and other A3 prints of his work. Of course, Jamie is also accepting commission work through the site, whether on the Frew sketch covers or independently of those. With prices on the site ranging from $15 - $250, there really is something for every budget. Tellingly, many of the very impressive pieces have already sold in the short time the website has been live. Perhaps the only item missing form the site is that famous 22nd Phantom triptych poster and associated artwork. However, with the 100 copies that were published SOLD OUT on Frew's website and the original art already snapped up by a grateful collector, it seems the rest of us missed the boat on that one. In early January Bill Harris, former The Phantom writer and editor, passed away aged 84. Mark Evanier, career comic writer and now blogger, reported Harris' passing in his blog earlier this week. The following extract has been taken from Mark's report, but we encourage you to follow this link and read it in full: Comic book writer-editor Bill Harris died January 8 at the age of 84. ... He was proudest of his editorial work on Western's Bullwinkle comics and of his writing work on the comic starring Lee Falk's classic character, The Phantom. In 1966 when the King Features newspaper syndicate attempted to start their own line of comics, Bill was hired as editor of its small list of titles which included Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, The Phantom, Blondie, Beetle Bailey and Popeye. The line was not successful, lasting a little over a year ... A popular new Phantom artist has just started featuring as a regular guest on a podcast and video webseries, providing listeners with 'a fun discussion about pop culture with a unique Australian perspective'. The cheekily named Most POPular Podcast was launched at the beginning of January and is hosted by Brisbane pop culture aficionado Amanda Bacchi. Her regular guest is one of the hottest new Phantom scribblers going around, Dr Paul Mason of Kid Phantom fame. At the time of writing two episodes have been released via Amanda's website Backflip Bacchi, and the series is also coming soon to iTunes. The episodes are coming in at a little under 30 minutes so far, and as the tagline suggests they feature the pair chatting about all things pop culture - mostly movie goss, TV series news and comic book reflections so far. Of interest to Phantom phans, Paul has also chatted briefly about his progress on Kid Phantom early in each episode to date, and is actually working on the comic as the pair record the podcast. Of even more interest to Phantom phans will be the YouTube versions of the podcast! In these videos (links below), the entertaining and informative chat is accompanied by a time lapse video of Paul inking (Ep 1) and colouring (Ep 2) Kid Phantom #4. This is truly a fascinating peek behind the curtain at the process behind the finished product. Thankfully, the videos are not spoiler-heavy - there is no dialogue or text, and the videos are very focused on the details rather than the big picture of the story.
