Felmang returns to Fantomen with a new story with a twist
Felmang is one of the most loved and enjoyed Phantom artists ever! Phans love his detail, his amazing penmanship, and the ability to tell a story with his artistic talent. It has been over 10 years since he last drew a story for the Fantomen comic, and it is exciting to see he is returning with a new story in Fantomen 22-23/2026. In this issue, we also see something different.
Normally during the creation process of a comic story, we see inking and colouring after pencils. However, this story is different. The comic features the whole story skipping those stages and just in pencils. It is the first time this has happened with a Phantom story and presents a different unique style. Does it work? Is something lost without the inking?
Skipping the inking stage is not entirely new and has been done before; usually it is for a style decision where printing the finishing pencils offers a soft, textured, and atmospheric look. Some notable examples of pencil-only comics are:
Mind MGMT by Matt Kindt: Features a distinct, raw watercolor and pencil aesthetic that matches the espionage and mystery tone.
Empowered by Adam Warren: Uses tight, clean pencil linework for certain sequences or stylistic choices.
Nathaniel Dusk by Gene Colan: Famed comic artist Gene Colan often worked with a loose, highly atmospheric pencil style that was reproduced directly with minimal traditional ink.
The comic comes out in shops on 14 October 2026, and the story is titled "Det gyllene svärdet" ("The Golden Sword"). We have included some of the panels below.
Do you think the artwork works not being inked?
