Editions Dante are giving the Phantom a good shake and not giving up which is a welcomed sight. Their first TPB in April 2020 was very successful with the issue sold out. They then started printing a regular series which included digital comics. From what we understand, this was not as popular after two issues. Announced in September Editions Dante are going back to TPB's. This time a mammoth 400 pages featuring stories from the Gold Key/King/Charlton series. You can buy their comics at their website. Release date is October 2021. What is really exciting is that we have been told that in November an English version of the same mammoth 400 page book will be released in English as well. France had such a rich history of The Phantom with the country being one of the few that published comics prior to 1940. The French publisher Editions des Remparts published a regular comic series in the 1960's and 1970's. Over 1,100 comics have been published in the country between 1938 and the last comic in 2012 before this. Editions Dante is a French publisher that back in 2009 published their first Phantom comic which reprinted six Moonstone stories. From what we understand they will be publishing more comics featuring our hero. Local artists Frank Cissokho and D. J. Franklin will be involved with the design of the comics and cover art. Each comic collections will be €20.99 ($35Au, $25US & 220sek) plus shipping. As always postage will be more internationally and due to license restraints may be restrictive. You can buy via their website here. First and currently in comic shops is a start of another collection reproducing the Canadian / French series Le Fantôme from Héritage. Interesting it is collecting a Canadian series of the Charlton comics. In the original 1975 to 1977 series there were 24 comics. This first volume includes the following stories from the first five comics: "Le Fantôme de Shang-Ri-La" ("The Phantom of Shang-Ri-La") by Dick Wood and Jim Aparo "La Légende vivante" ("The Living Legend") by unknown creators "Le secret de la rançon dorée" ("The Secret of the Golden Ransom") by an unknown writer and Sal Trapani "Le démon invisible" ("The Invisible Demon") by Bill Harris and Bill Lignante "Le tigre de la terreur" ("The Terror Tiger") by Bill Harris and Bill Lignante "Delilah" by Bill Harris and Bill Lignante "Les aventures de la fille Fantôme" ("The Adventures of the Girl Phantom") by Dick Wood and Bill Lignante. "Le trésor de Bengali Bay" ("The Treasure of Bengali Bay") by Bill Harris and Bill Lignante. "La malédiction de Kallai" ("The Curse of Kallai") by Dick Wood, Pat Boyette and Vince Alascia "La mort du Fantôme" ("The Phantom's Death") by Don Jon Arneson and Jim Aparo "Le singe géant de Tawth" ("The Giant Ape of Tawth") by Don Jon Arneson and Jim Aparo No word yet if they are planning on reprinting the whole series. Likely it will depend on sales. From what we have gathered, Editions Dante will also be continuing on with their reproduction series of the Moonstone stories in a very similar format as their initial 2009 book. At this stage there is no word on a release date or even the stories. If their reproduction series continue to sell, the publisher has confirmed it will also be looking at the Dynamite Entertainment stories, maybe including "The Last Phantom" series. A huge thanks to Ulf Granberg, Pidde Andersson and Andreas Eriksson. Everyone was shocked at his sad passing. You can listen to our podcast reflection on his legacy at X-Band: The Phantom Podcast #194 and tribute here which was re published by Frew in issue 1899. The funeral was held on the 20th of August in southern Sweden, a town called Ystad in an old gothic Lutheran church. The existing building is from the middle of the 17th century but the foundations date back to the 13th century. Ulf was one of the guests who spoke about his 40+ year friendship and his hard work on the Fantomen books, the inspiration and dreams he brought to the work. You can read the full obituary at the bottom of this article. The good mark wreath sent by Ulf Granberg, Hans Lindahl and Lennart Moberg was a highlight for many. Ulf’s instructions to the florist were to make the wreath entirely out of yellow. The two slightly different shades of yellow show the good mark in relief. I am sure every phan will echo "well done!". The words on the ribbon thanked Claes for his hard work on the Fantomen books, the inspiration and memories. Ulf Granberg's Obituary We got to know each other at the end of the 70’s, Claes, when you submitted a comic series for the comic book Svenska Serier – and we became good friends when you wanted to try your hand at writing scripts for the Phantom series a few years later. I felt you had an unusual talent for writing, and enthusiasm over this medium and I decided to guide you on to a career as comics writer. I had hopes and expectations which you soon fulfilled and after a year even surpassed. Already from the start you were very productive and kept deadlines – and this would become two of your marks of Nobility, Claes. We had close and frequent contacts over the phone and discussed your ideas and story suggestions for the Phantom. We soon discovered that we also had in common a great interest in history, and this interest gave birth to a big number of exciting and interesting adventures with the Phantom. In the early 90’s the production of stories for the comic book needed more structure and a long term planning. To meet this need 'The Phantom Seminars' were started and held one or two times a year, where the Editorial department together with artists and scriptwriters met for a couple of days at different conference centers around Stockholm for brain storming and exchanging ideas. Soon you became a key member, thanks to your knowledge, your discipline and your precise working methods. We did almost 30 seminars during 15 years and several hundred adventures were born during these meetings. Many of them are today among fans considered to be classic stories. Without your devoted work and your deep knowledge of Phantom lore, this achievement hadn’t been possible, Claes. Apart from writing stories for the Phantom you have also written many episodes for the 91:an comic book and over the years written many articles on comics and the comics medium, greatly appreciated among a vast number of comics fans. You have also been a lead author on the books on Swedish Comics History – and should have been so, also on the fifth book in this series, which we together should have started working on this autumn. Others will now have to take over your work, Claes, but the book will be done in your spirit. I’m proud that I at one time led you on to the path of comics and comic books – and it is with deep mourning and grievance I now have to say goodbye. Rest in peace, Claes. Ulf Granberg

Inkspot is a magazine released by the Australian Cartoonists’ Association (ACA) . In their Autumn / Winter 2021 (#92) issue, Julie Ditrich has written a four page article titled "Writing to Purpose: 7 Insights I Gained from Writing The Phantom". Throughout the article it features artwork from past and future to come stories by Brazilian artist Wendell Cavalcanti. The 7 insights detailed in the article by Julie Ditrich are: Writing to the publisher’s brief, Meeting Phan expectation, Writing to update the visual storytelling craft, Writing within the tropes of the action-adventure genre, Writing to Phantom lore, Writing to give the artist the opportunity to shine, Writing within the constraints of the comics medium. Thanks to Norwegian phan Kristian Hellesund we now see the cover and contents for the Fantomet Christmas Album for 2021. This is exciting news as apart from the ongoing Fantomet Knronologisk albums this is the first new issue coming out from Norway in two years. This Christmas album was originally promised back in October 2020. The two stories will be in colour including the classic Lee Falk and Sy Barry Drummer of Timpenni Daily story and the second will be The Spy Ship by Tony DePaul and Jeff Weigel. Rafael Ruiz is a recent acquisition to the Team Fantomen ranks and follows many other top quality Spanish artists who have worked on our hero like Jaime Vallve, Carlos Cruz, Joan Boix, Rafael Lopez Espi and Coral Martinez. His first story was published in 2015 titled "The Mark of Cain" and was published in Frew #1762, Fantomen 25-26/2015, Fantomet 1/2016 and Brazil's O Fantasma #2. Fans have enjoyed his work ever since and now we get to learn more as we were lucky enough to spend some time with Rafael Ruiz. Chronicle Chamber: Welcome to Chronicle Chamber. Can you start of by telling us a bit about yourself? Including what region you are from in Spain? Rafael Ruiz: I was born in the Balearic Islands. Specifically in Palma de Mallorca. CC: Where you always into drawing and art? Was it something you grew up wanting to do? RR: My mother used to tell me jokingly that I was born with a pencil in my hand. From a very young age and without knowing why, I had a knack for drawing. I liked to create characters, vehicles of all kinds and small comics. As time went by, I was inspired by comics and movies, and mainly by my father. He was a great artist. He used to make big paintings for the cinemas on the island (right). A good person and a better mentor. Everything I know about the art of color I learned from him. The truth is that my father did not want me to follow in his footsteps, as he said that making a living as an artist is not usually profitable. My mother, on the other hand, always supported me in my endeavor. CC: Did you study art and if so, where? RR: I studied art at a local high school on the island. I studied applied arts and art history in the 1990's. It helped me in certain aspects, but the truth is that my real study was self-taught. I learned everything I know about artistic and anatomical drawing on my own. The art of color I learned from my father, as I said before. CC: Is there anyone in particular who also inspired you and influenced your work besides your father? RR: Of course. With the comic and illustration section mainly by John Buscema. I was fascinated by his work on "Conan the Barbarian" and I was also inspired by great artists such as Frank Frazetta, Bruce Timm, Simon Bisley, Richard Corben, Ron Garney, John Romita, Geof Darrow and Frank Miller. My other great source of inspiration is the seventh art (movies). Especially science fiction, action, fantasy and adventure movies. Some of the inspiring movies and directors are Ridley Scott with Alien and Blade Runner, James Cameron with Terminator or Aliens, Paul Verhoeven with Robocop or Total Recall, John Mctiernan with Predator or Die Hard, Kubrick with 2001, Spielberg with Indiana Jones, Lucas with Star Wars, Tim Burton with Batman, Stallone with Rocky or Rambo. And last but not least, video games: Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Driver, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Crash Bandicoot and more recently Red Dead Redemption, Last or Us, Grand Theft Auto, God of War, BioShock, Uncharted and Alien Isolation. CC: What made you want to be an artist? RR: I have always loved the art of drawing and painting. The motivation came from movies, comics, artwork in general and video games. CC: Can you tell us about your first break in the industry? RR: Eventually, I started to publish some comics for a local newspaper and covers for magazines and covers for musicians. Later on, I started to publish short stories in erotic editorials like "La Cúpula ediciones" or "Eros" from Dolmen Editorial. I spent years doing alternative jobs while I established myself as a cartoonist as a full time profession. Working for Comicup was when I started doing comics on a regular basis. They were mostly short stories with a juvenile theme. My most notorious work during those years was working with Silvio Camboni and Dennis Pierre in the comic book series "Gargouilles" as a colorist for the publishing house "Les Humanoïdes Associés". CC: Do you like working on the Phantom? Did you know of the Phantom before you started work on those stories? Did you ever read the character? RR: I no longer work in the franchise. But I remember I had a great time creating those stories. Especially on the covers and independent illustrations. The truth is that when I was offered to do the Phantom comics I had very little knowledge of the characters and their history. I had to do a lot of research at the beginning. Before doing the stories I remembered finding some comics in my collection and I devoured them. I have since added many more to my collection. CC: That is sad your no longer working on the series. How did you get the role of the Phantom for Team Fantomen in the first place? RR: The opportunity came to work on the Phantom franchise in collaboration with Egmont and Comicup which was the studio I was working for. CC: In the last few years your Phantom work has been assisted by Coral Martinez. Has that changed your style or the way you work having her ink your pencils?? RR: Coral Martinez has a great talent with her inks. When I collaborated with her it was great to see how she embellished the pencils. She didn't influence me since our work was parallel. I let myself go with my style and narrative. Coral would then do her great finishing. CC: You also recently worked on the “jam story” written by Andreas Eriksson. What was it like being a part of that? RR: It's my favorite. I really enjoyed collaborating with so many great artists and with a story like Eriksson's Jam story. I loved being able to do the ending! CC: You have worked on several covers for Team Fantomen and also a card for the (Australian) Frew Gallery trading card series. Do you prefer covers or interior work and is there a difference in the way you work with a cover? RR: Storytelling and illustration are very different processes. Personally, I enjoy illustration more. But I must say that creating the narrative of the scenes is a lot of fun.. CC: In the story "Red Zone" it features the Phantom visiting New Zealand for the first time. Did it require extra research? Do you use google for your research? RR: Of course. I had to do a lot of research. Especially before and after the disaster in the city of New Zealand. Without Google it would have been a very difficult job to do. CC: Do you accept commissions and how can they contact you? RR: Yes, of course. I had to temporarily stop drawing for a few years for personal reasons. But I'm back. 5th of October is the date that Mikael Lyck has given in the attached video for when the kickstarter campaign starts for the first expansion pack to the popular Phantom card game. The expansion pack is based on the Sunday newspaper story "Terror in Mawitaan" from 2003 written by Tony DePaul and drawn by Graham Nolan. After reading disappointing stories from various publishers and then asking King Features Syndicate about their Phantom bible in X-Band: The Phantom Podcast #191 the boys at Chronicle Chamber (Jermayn Parker, Dan Fraser, Stephen East & Mikael Lyck) have decided to take matters in their own hands and start the discussion. After a sell out first volume Editions Dante is now releasing their release of the Charlton comics as a regular monthly comic. Each comic will be 36 pages in colour and priced at 8,99 Euros ($15Au, $10US & 90 Kronors). Like a lot of publishers they are also providing a digital version which you can buy here for 4.99 €.
