Mikael Lyck from Chronicle Chamber reviews Fantomen 20/2023 featuring the following stories: "Monstret i Montargis" ("The Wolfman of Montargis") by Norman Worker and Hans Lindahl The cover features a reused image made by Mikael Gustavsson, this was first used as the publishing schedule poster from 1991. The reason for the reused cover and reprint story is that the planned story is delayed and the cover matches it, it is however over one year since Fantomen had no new Phantom content and this was not by choice, well done by Andreas Eriksson and Jacob Habinc in my opinion. The Phantom story is a reprint of the first Hans Lindahl story made to be colored, with a script by Norman Worker. The story can be read in Frew #1613. The side comic of the issue is the conclusion of the Thorgal story started in the last issue. Keen Phantom collectors might have come across merch labeled Gulbla or Gul & Blå, here is the story about this company and their history with the Phantom. The first Gul & Blå store opened in central Stockholm of Sweden in 1966 to sell modern jeans to the youth generation that listen to Beatles. With low waists and wide legs it was a hit and the queue to the store was always a block long (at least according to my mom and dad). The store was divided for men (blue / Blå) and women (Yellow / Gul). Blue and Yellow is also the colors in the Swedish flag. Even though the store and brand was the most sought after for the youth of 1960's and 1970's, when I, myself was a teenager in the 1990's it was not as cool and they closed their doors. But they did not only sell jeans, they sold other pop cultural things including popular brands such as Mickey Mouse, Superman, Betty Boop, Dick Tracy and of course The Phantom. Their own brand usually was written as Gulbla, my guess to sound more international. Wikipedi makes mention that there was even a hand painted Phantom in the display window of the store, I have however not found any photos or pictures of it. Has anyone else? Latest news is that the store will soon reopen in new regime, it will be a brand where celerity designed clothes will be sold, if there will be any Phantom licensed product are still unknown. If they do, we of course will let you know. Alongside clothes, they also produced non clothing related items like zippo lighters and posters. What is interesting is that we have managed to find a photo of Lee Falk wearing a Gulbla scarf - we believe this photo was taken from a 1993 New York Comic Show. Frew readers and phans around the world all got a little surprise when they opened their copy of the Giant Size #26. Inside was a neat little four page story originally created back in 1992 by Bob Scarlatti and Romano Felmang. The story was originally commissioned by Christies Auctions which is a British fine Art Auction House and the story first in their 7 May 1992 auction catalogue featuring many comic and cartoon original artwork up for sale. This story was printed in Italian and published in landscape format, two rows per page over 8 pages. Attached here is the original art which was sold on the Wannanes Auction website on September 2019. Interestingly, Frew's Giant Size was not the first time this story was published in English. That honour goes to Comics Revue #120 which also features a Felmang interview. Rick Norwood is the editor for Comics Revue and he also edited the story into English - interestingly the translated versions between the Comics Revue and Frew are very different. As a limited editor and translator I would say the Frew version is more accurate to the original Italian version. We are not including full versions of the English versions - if you want to read the full story, you can buy the Frew comic from their website. Mikael Lyck from Chronicle Chamber reviews the 2023 Fantomen softcover album featuring the following stories: "Den maskerade cowboyen" ("The Phantom Cowboy") by Lee Falk, Sy Barry, George Olesen, and Keith Williams "Spökbyn" ("The Massacre") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry "Wagon Master" by Ulf Granberg, Janne Lundström, and Özcan Eralp "Indianhataren" ("The Indian Hater") by Janne Lundström, and Özcan Eralp "Terror i öknen" ("Terror in the Desert") by Janne Lundström, and Özcan Eralp "I laglöst land" ("Badlands") by Özcan Eralp This is an amazing cover by Luca Erbetta. This years softcover book has a western theme, quite a lot like the 2018 annual (Frew #1802). Let us go through the stories. "Den maskerade cowboyen" ("The Phantom Cowboy") by Lee Falk, Sy Barry, George Olesen, and Keith Williams This is the last Sy Barry drawn story, I think it is really good story as unfortnately some of the other stories from this period are not as strong. In this story we see Annie marrying the 16th Phantom. "Spökbyn" ("The Massacre") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry This is a very short story with some supernatural elements, it is ok. "Wagon Master" by Ulf Granberg, Janne Lundström, and Özcan Eralp "Indianhataren" ("The Indian Hater") by Janne Lundström, and Özcan Eralp These two stories are quite connected through the use of the character Jonah Blackbird, i think it is a bit of a shame that there is no explanation why Jonah went from trying to find a new home for him and all the freed slaves to then becoming a soldier in the US military. Apart from this loophole I really enjoy these two stories. "Terror i öknen" ("Terror in the Desert") by Janne Lundström, and Özcan Eralp "I laglöst land" ("Badlands") by Özcan Eralp In these stories, we get to see 17th Phantom meeting with Mary and how they got married. We see Mary again in the Frew 75th anniversary in the "Singh Raiders" story. My final thoughts on this book as a whole is that in my opinion this is the best softcover book out of all of them. In my opinion, the theme is much stronger than any of the other ones. I hope the following books will keep strong themes as well. Until next time, Happy Phantoming! The Phantom has returned to Chile, in a comic book form to be specific, after being absent in the country in any form since the 1980s. Chile, like some other South American countries have had a short publishing chronology of the Phantom. Appearing first in the 'Pulgarcito' magazine with other comic characters, he finally got his own comic book series from 'Editorial Lord Cochrane' called 'El Fantasma' in 1966. Running from 1966 to 1968, the series had 24 issues and mostly consisted of Gold Key and King Comics stories with the covers also taken from them. This series ran simultaneously with two other series of 'El Fantasma' comics from Editorial Pasa (Venezuela) and Cambridge Publishing (Colombia). The subsequent Mandrake series from Editorial Lord Cochrane also featured some Phantom stories. The Phantom or 'El Fantasma' also appeared in the newspaper 'La Tercera' with strips being serialized till the 1980s. He also had some appearances in several parody magazines proving that he was very popular when he was around. Now, after at least 40 years of absence, the phantom has returned to Chile in the form of not just one, but a series of eight hardcover comic books titled 'Edición De Coleccón El Fantasma'. Published by a publisher with the name ending with 'Porte', the comic books are seen on the website de Club Lectores EL MERCURIO with the release date of 14th July 2023. Even though that means the books are supposed to be already out, they haven't appeared in any other online comic book marketplaces yet. From what we can learn from the images of the books provided in the websites, the books are in hardcover format and features modern Daily and Sunday stories with 2 stories per book. The list of the stories will be provided in the end of the article. The covers of the books are taken from various artworks of different Phan Phavorite artists. Some artists featured are - Sal Velluto, Jeff Weigel, Jim Aparo, Darwyn Cooke etc. Most of them are lifted from the original covers or trading cards and redesigned. The books are sold on the website both as a pack of 8 books and single issues. The pack of 8 books described as "8 books with his classic adventures in hardcover collector's editions" is priced $71,920 Chilean Pesos ($83.97 USD, 129.89 AUD, kr 914.79 and ₹6,951.27 INR) while the single issues are priced $9.990 Chilean Pesos ($0.012 USD, $0.018 AUD, kr 0.13 and ₹0.97 INR). However the website states that they can only ship within Chile, and by the time of writing this article, no response has come from them about International shipping. The website states that only 800 copies of the books were printed and less than 200 copies of each book and less than 500 of the packs are left. Which proves that they have indeed been selling well and the character is still popular there. There is not much known about these books other than the information provided above. It is still unclear if the books are even licensed or not, also unclear is their contents, from the translated versions of the names we can guess that they are the newer Sunday and Daily stories. The publisher's name and the quantity of pages and whether they are printed in colour or not is also unclear. Still, it's great to see the Phantom returning to Chile after a long time, hopefully that would mean more publications coming out and would also make way for him to return in the other countries where he's been absent for a long time. The Phantom Mallon Diary is a tradition that many a phan enjoys and they are back again for 2024 with pre-orders now open. This year Mallon is producing their ever-popular diary, returning to an accompanying journal (last seen in 2021), and continuing with their recent innovation of a limited edition print of the diary cover art. They have once again moved away from the wall calendar which we saw last year in 2023. Joining the ranks of past Mallon Diary cover artists including Glenn Ford, Jeremy MacPherson, Douglas Klauaba is celebrated American artist and current custodian of the Sunday strip, Jeff Weigel. Last year Devil shared the limelight and this year it is Diana as they share a quiet, calm, evocative and beautifully executed moment together. As a cover image Jeff's artwork could hold a special poignancy for anyone wanting to use the diary for reflective journaling (does anyone do that anymore?), but as a 'naked' print it would look just amazing framed and up on the wall. Sized slightly smaller than A4 and with Mallon's high quality print style, this romantic image could surely appear in the shared living space with an understanding partner! The journal features an old Frew cover of a similar shared moment - this first graced the cover of Frew #131. Like last year, these artworks leads us to a great theme. Mallon explains that the character of Diana plays a leading role in both of this year’s publications, with the diary and the journal each acknowledging Diana’s role in the Phantom story. The main story features "Belle epoque del 5: Mord på Maxim's" ("Murder at Maxim's") by Pidde Andersson and Percy Ochoa. The never ending honeymoon of the 19th Phantom continues, full of action and chases, I enjoyed this as I have the earlier stories. "Vattumännen" ("Waterman") by Lee Falk, George Olesen, and Fred Fredericks is not the best period in the Daily stories, the art is good and it is nice to have it printed in Fantomen for completeness sake. "Joomba försvunnen" ("Joomba Missing") by Özcan Eralp is a short story, only 9 pages in total, Joomba is missing after Rex took him for a trek, they search but he is nowhere to be found so Rex and Kit goes to the circus to look at the elephant… I would define it as a filler like the stories featuring in the Frew comics recently. Then we have Thorgal as a side story, they finally come home to the village only to see that everyone is mind controlled, one of the better stories for a while in my opinion. The preview for the next issue is a Team Fantomen reprint featuring a Norman Worker and Hans Lindahl story so it is bound to be good, do not remember it by just the title. This is also the first time in a long time that we do not see any new Phantom content in a Fantomen comic. We also see the conclusion of the Thorgal story Fantomen 17/2023 The cover is by Luca Erbetta, I get the feeling that it depicts an evil doppelganger to the Phantom, sure, I was unsure of how evil or good he is when reading it. The first story featured is "Besökaren" ("The Visitor") by Tony DePaul and Jeff Weigel. This story got a lot of attention when it was featured in the newspapers on social media. There is a lot happening here, there is a new room in the Skull Cave, the hall of costumes and with it Jeff makes a unique costume for each Phantom. Some negative comments I read about this are that he should look the same during all these years. I disagree, I think it is really cool with some variations and they still look close enough to be thought of to be the same during the years. Then the new entity of the Visitor, I am unsure about this one, but my hope is that it was not a one time thing and we get to learn more about it in the future. The next story is "Gamle Moz Krönika" ("The Chronicle of Old Man Mozz") by Tony DePaul and Mike Manley. This story is the follow up from Wreck and Havoc at Gravelines. I personally think about these stories as one long ongoing story. This part is still the cautioning of the future and I look forward to see what really happened. Fantomen 16/2023 This cover is by Rafael Ruiz, I think it looks great and would love to have it hanging on the wall, unsure if it pops enough in the newsstand though. What do you think? The main story is "Lokes skatt" ("Loki's Treasure") by Dag Frognes and Kari Leppänen. This is Frognes first story since 2014, a bit too heavy on the supernatural side, but also has some nice world building. Kari's art is not up to the great standard he once held but a lot of the scenery feels like he has taken his time and care and looks good. The Thorgal side story is the concluding part about the seal woman, a good episode, better than most of the earlier ones. Will he have any more for 2023? A few let downs in my opinion is that there is no embossing on the hard cover and no stamp with the limited edition number like last year. The art in the stories are all made by Kari Leppänen and it is of amazing quality. We also get all the covers of when the stories first were published. I was a bit surprised when they announced the theme of the book, thinking it might not be what I was most excited to see as a hardcover book, I remember the stories as being odd and not that “important” since they were never about the “real” Phantom. However, after re-reading all of them I really understand it, as Andreas Eriksson wrote in the foreword, it is almost as if it is written as a follow up on the Heart of Darkness saga and in my opinion it elevates these stories to a new level by reading them all in short succession unlike when first published. In my mind it was an easier read than the Heart of Darkness hardcover collection, both that it is in color, but also that the parts are more self contained. Overall, I expected a good book and was pleasantly surprised by a great book. I really hope the sales of this book matches the last one so we can get more of these! A great cover by Ertuğrul Edirne who is a Turkish cover artist currently living in Germany. These covers originally featured on the Büyülü Çizgi Roman Turkish series. Some highlights of this publication series are the paper and print quality. The print run is smaller than most comic of only 700 copies.
