- Regal Publishers: The Phantom '85th Anniversary Special' Issues #7 & #8 Review
India's Regal Publishers kicks off their 2021 with Issues #7 & #8 of their ongoing English full colour comics series of 'The Phantom'. 17th February, 2021 marks 85 Years of 'The Phantom' being in existence and in publication in newspaper strips since its inception in 1936 - and these issues came out just in time to commemorate this historical milestone. Regal continue their usage of thick gloss paper which was introduced from their previous #5 & #6 '2020 Christmas Special' issues, and some free supplements with each issue. Issue #7 comes with a mini poster featuring the cover art of the same issue while #8 comes with a card with the picture of The Phantom taken from the cover art of issue #7. Issue #7 features cover art by Vincent Moses Raja, who seems to have been featured in majority of the covers and supplement art. Issue #8 has covers drawn by Abhilash Chako, who was also responsible for the cover of Issue #3. There are two unique new Phantom art by legendary Italian artist Felmang in each issue's inside covers. Stories on both issues are reprints of Sunday strips however #7 features a Lee Falk story for the first time in this comic series. So far Regal had been reprinting Sundays of all the post-Falk era, however with 'The Floradon Mystery' they take their first step into an original Falk story in this series. Quite apt considering its the 85th Anniversary, and its natural that a story by the original creator will be featured. Speaking about firsts, Issue #7 also for the first time features the art of Terry Beaty in this publication with the modern classic Sunday story 'Mandrake's Bon Voyage' - written by Tony DePaul. This also is the first appearance of another of Lee Falk's legendary character, Mandrake in this series. Quite an introduction considering that Regal have already announced that they will soon be publishing a 'Mandrake the Magician' series later this year. Issue #8 features two Sundays written by Tony DePaul and illustrated by Graham Nolan, 'On The Trail of An Assassin' and 'The Mystery of Fire Head Peak'. Both solid tales - the former an intense action drama, while the latter is a very Falkish fantasy adventure story. The price for each issue is 200 Indian Rupees which is about: $3.50 Australian Dollars, $2.80 US Dollars, 2.27 Euro & 23 Swedish Krona. Regal have raised the bar very high for 'The Phantom' monthly comics with their premium quality paper and high fidelity colour printing. Regal have been going from strength to strength with each issue however all their efforts are still unfortunately hampered by the broken distribution chain - an aftermath of the lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to licensing limitations, Regal can only sell & ship to addresses within India - so for Phans living outside India, I recommend you befriend an Indian Phan & have these books bought & shipped to you by them. If not, FREW are selling some copies of this series via their website, and I'm sure these issues too will show up for order there - although in very limited quantity. - Regal Publishers: The Phantom 'Lee Falk Birthday Special' Issues #11 & #12 Review
India's Regal Publishers are back in April '21 with two new issues of their ongoing full colour, English comic series of 'The Phantom'. 28th April 2021 marks the 110th birth anniversary of the late Lee Falk - the legendary creator of The Phantom & Regal pulled no punches in commemorating this event through their latest issues of #11 & #12 - also labelled as 'Lee Falk Birthday Special' Issues. Each issue runs for 56 pages, have thick gloss paper (comparable to the Frew Trade paperbacks), contain stories written by Lee Falk, Special articles by well known personalities in The Phantom creator-sphere & phandom - to celebrate the life and times of Lee Falk. Each issue comes with its unique free supplements too & for the first time in this comic series - each issue reprints a Daily newspaper strip in colour. The print quality and colour separation are as usual - simply impeccable. Issue 11 has a cover drawn by Vincent Moses Raja, the same image is also used in the free collectible card that comes with it. The Inside Front Cover has a Lee Falk portrait drawn by me (yours truly) to commemorate his Birthday. The Inside Back Cover has a Lee Falk portrait drawn by Vincent Moses Raja with a quote from Lee Falk. The Issue Opens with an excerpt of an article by Peder J Bjorkmann, originally from the book 'Lee Falk - Storyteller' Valerie Falk & Andreas Eriksson (Now the editor of Fantomen, Sweden) are co credited in the article and also Indian Phan Swaroop Chand is credited for making this exchange with Regal Publishers possible. The Stories included are 'Waterman', a Sunday strip drawn by George Olesen & inked by Fred Fredericks, & 'The Albee', a dailys strip drawn by George Olesen & inked by Keith Williams. Issue 12 has a cover drawn by me (yours truly) & is something I've strived to make very unique and different. If you want to know more about the process and how this cover came to fruition check out the article I wrote about The Journey behind my Covers for Regal Comics. The Inside Front and Back Cover both have the Lee Falk portrait I drew. The Issue has articles by Anthony Tollin (the colourist on DC Comics' The Phantom run of 1989), Bob Griffin and Pete Klaus - all paying their tribute to Falk. Swaroop is credited with helping Regal get in touch with these personalities and making it happen. The Stories included are 'The Vanished Village' - Another Olesen & Fredericks Sunday Strip & 'Terror at The Opera' - The very last Lee Falk written Daily Story. Lee Falk passed away during the publishing of the strip and his wife Elizabeth is also co-credited for finishing the story. A Fitting choice for the tribute. The price for each issue is 200 Indian Rupees which is about: $3.47 Australian Dollars, $2.69 US Dollars, 2.22 Euro & 22.50 Swedish Krona. (Rates as of today) Regal continue with their superb quality of production in these new issues & these are indeed going to be worthy of being collectibles in the future for Indian as well as international Phantom collectors. India is already in a devastating second wave of the pandemic, and things are more grim than ever. I wish the team at Regal the best of luck, & for the sake of all the Phans worldwide I hope these sell well enough to ensure we keep getting these fantastic comics at such great prices. Regal have an Amazon Storefront for Indian Phans who would like to order these books from Amazon.in Issues #1 to #6 can be ordered HERE Issues #7 to 10 can be ordered HERE Issues #11 to #12 and Mandrake #1 can be ordered HERE For any assistance regarding ordering these books directly from Regal you can contact Regal Publishers here: Regal Publishers Whatsapp & Phone No: +91 94810 52592 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/regalpublishers/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/regalpublishers/ E-mail: regalpublishers@gmail.com
- Regal Publishers: The Phantom '2020 Christmas Special' Issues #5 & #6 Review
Regal Publishers from India opened December 2020 by releasing issues #5 & #6 of their English, bi-monthly, full colour, 'The Phantom' comic series. The production quality of Issues #3 & #4 of October 2020 set the bar quite high, with a significant upgrade in paper & print quality over issues #1 & #2. I thought they had hit the proverbial ceiling for quality, but I was wrong. Issues #5 & #6 , branded as the 2020 Christmas Special, has even thicker & now, glossy 'art paper'. Similar in thickness & feel to the paper on the FREW 'The Phantom' full colour trade paperback series of books, this 90 gsm art paper gives these comics a nice heft to them & makes the pages durable with little to no chance of degrading over time. The glossy quality of the paper accentuates the detailed linework & makes all the colours really pop! Regal have to be commended for the outstanding print fidelity in reproducing these 'Sunday strips'. Every line, colour, & hue is intact, even in the most detailed of panels, with no overlap or bleed at all! Regal have also made some design changes in the inside pages. Gone are the usual red borders on each page which mentioned a header with the story name & 'Regal Comics' & the footer mentioned the page no. Along with removing the borders they have also switched to a much nicer looking font for the header and footer texts. In my opinion it enhances the presentation of each page giving it a much cooler and smarter look from its previous installments. Both issues, reprint post-Falk Sunday Strips, run 56 pages, & come with a free sticker each. The art on each sticker is from the covers of issues #1 & #2 by Vincent Moses Raja. All the stories featured have been written by Tony DePaul, drawn by the late Paul Ryan, and coloured by Tom Smith. Comics veteran Tom Smith's colours are simply outstanding and Regal does justice in reproducing and presenting them with utmost integrity. Issue #5 has cover art by Vincent Moses Raja and consist of the stories 'The Love Triangle' & 'The Lost Kingdom of Avaria'. Issue #6 has cover art by Sanjay Valecha and reprints 'The Accursed Land' & 'The Dirty Half Dozen'. Personally I prefer the story selection on Issue #6 as they are much more dramatic and modern. The price for each issue is 200 Indian Rupees which is about: $3.6 Australian Dollars, $2.7 US Dollars, 2.24 Euro & 23 Swedish Krona. I consider these books to be of the finest production quality at par or better than most single issue monthly comics put out by heavyweights like DC, Marvel or Image Comics. Irrespective of my personal opinion of the cover artworks not doing justice to the quality of the contents inside - Regal Publishers have definitely raised the bar in terms of production quality among all the active Phantom monthly publications across the world. I truly am excited to see where they can take things from here!
