This picture of the Phantom 21 Generations all together has been one of the most popular images ever since phan Simon Treschow posted it online. That image has been viewed 23,000 odd times as it was shared all through out the Phantom world. The poster is now available at the Frew website here . The story behind the poster is as fascinating as the image itself. In a Facebook post by creator Jeff Weigel he posted: Tony DePaul wrote the currently-running Sunday Phantom storyline concerning the newly-constructed " Hall of Costumes " in Skull Cave. The Hall displays all the Phantom costumes from previous generations. It seemed to me that it would be pointless (and dull, and narratively confusing) to construct a hall filled with 21 identical Phantom costumes, so I consulted with Tony on the idea of making variations to the costumes to reflect their different eras. He gave the idea his blessing. So I designed some historically-aligned variations in the few costumes Phantom references in the story. I thought the variations were a minor detour in the legend for the purposes of one story. Then a Phan contacted me to request a piece of commissioned art displaying all the costume variations across the ages. That was an offer I couldn't turn down. (Incidentally, that Phan did the research to come up with the dates shown on this image.) After the original art was sent off to the buyer, I offered the image to my friends at Frew to see if they'd like to buy the digital image for use as a cover. Glenn Ford jumped at the offer and so this print of the image is now available from the Frew gang. The first time we saw the " Hall of Costumes " in the Skull Cave was April 25, 2021. According to a Facebook post by Frew they were originally going to sell this poster at the June 2021 Sydney Supanova before they decided not to attend due to the COVID pandemic. Anyone reading Dudley Hogarth 's Message From The Publisher in the FREW editions published through 2021, particularly in the latter third of the year, will have some small understanding of the difficulties faced by the relatively small Australia publisher through a second COVID affected year. Based in a city that went through over 100 days of lockdown from June to October, dealing with key staff working from home, a disrupted postal services and supply issues, FREW nevertheless managed to release a fortnightly comic without missing an issue or deadline, a truly remarkable effort. Frew Publications has announced a new product to go with their generations poster that was a great success. This time it is a set of 27 cards featuring all Phantoms past, present and from the future (phuture). You can buy them here via Frew 's website The themed costumes has been greatly accepted widely after being shown in the Sunday story " The Visitor ". What also is beginning to be accepted is the official timeline which is taken from the Phantom Wiki and merges Lee Falk and Team Fantomen universes. Ad described by Frew these cards have been printed in a typical ‘chase card’ style, with an opaque-white backed Phantom printed over a silver aluminium foil background, making it literally 27 chase cards in the full set... collected in 9-pocket clear Ultra-pro sleeves. It is worth noting that there is also uncut sheets of these cards which can be brought here. You may be asking 27 cards but there is only 21 Phantoms. The extra cards are: Kit jnr (future 22nd) Heloise (future 22nd) Julie Walker (17th Phantoms twin sister) Defenders of the Earth Phantom Phantom 2040 The Phantom from " Forever " which was published in Frew #1893 The " Forever " story features the first of a futuristic robotic Phantom after the last Phantom died. Jermayn Parker and Dan Fraser review the Frew's second graphic novel titled " The Ghost and the Monster ". You can buy this graphic novel on the Frew website and many local Australian comic book shops. The story was written by Andrew Constant ‎ and drawn by Giancarlo Caracuzzo . Giancarlo's daughter Flavia Caracuzzo coloured the story. In our review we look at the cover, the art, the storyline and our overview opinions of the book. Notes from Jermayn 's review is below in bullet point: Thought the cover was a bit bland and doesn't scream out 'Buy Me'. Really enjoyed Giancarlo 's art and his daughters colours. Suits the story and work well together. They are a great team. Andrew and Giancarlo work well together. The fight scenes flow well. Does the monster and Frankenstein theme work with the Phantom? The past Phantom cameo of the 17th Phantom was enjoyable. Andrew wrote Diana perfectly. One of the few that can make Diana more than just a damsel in distress. Creators take note. Unsure if the jail holding the bad guy is Phantom-like. Does the Phantom dwell outside justice? Would like to see more from this team and at least one graphic novel a year. Chronicle Chamber's annual poll on Frew 's phans' phavourites results revealed here! We now know what you loved about Frew Publications last year, as you the phans voted on your best Frew issues, stories and covers, produced and published under the extraordinary circumstances of a COVID affected 2021. After another huge response from the phans, the Best of Frew 2021 results are below, and are discussed in detail in our X-Band: The Phantom Podcast Episode #209 - Our Best of 2021 . Once again we were blown away by the entries - over 260 responses this year. Thanks so much to all of you who took the time to reflect on the year that was and nominate your favourite Frew covers, stories and issues from the year that was 2021. Before the individual results, a standing ovation for the team at Frew ! For the first time since this survey has been running, every single cover, story and issue received at least one vote from the public! ALL 30 covers received votes (i.e. in someone's top 3) ALL 57 stories received votes (i.e. in someone's top 5) ALL 32 issues received votes (i.e. in someone's top 3) Obviously Frew are going from strength to strength in the way that they cater for a very wide audience, and perhaps even broadening the market. Since the advent of the new Frew Crew they certainly have tried a range of approaches - an increase in locally created content; a range of products (regular issues, specials, TPB's, Giantsize) being available; stories from a wide range of genres, including finding that balance of old and new stories. It would appear to be working as everything they produced this year certainly catered to someone's taste, so long may it continue! Phan votes for Best FREW Cover of 2021 According to the popular vote, where people nominated their Top 3 covers of the year: Points of note: Daniel Picciotto takes out first place for a second year in a row. Daniel has produced only three covers for Frew, and they are clearly well received by the phans, with two top spots in succession, as well as a 5th place last year. This particular image has been around for a couple of years now (first seen during The Treasures of Drakon board game Kickstarter campaign), and it's wonderful to see it now being acclaimed as the Cover of the Year. Young Australian artist Alex Trpcevski has well and truly burst onto the scenes, with his dynamic, vibrant and action-packed covers filling places 2, 3 and 4. He is also the only artist with multiple covers in the top 10 this year. For a second year in a row, 9 of the top 11 positions were taken by Australian artists. Phan votes for Best FREW Story of 2021 According to the popular vote, where people nominated their Top 5 stories of the year: Points of note: For the third year in a row, the team of Duncan Munro and Jeff Weigel has been chosen as "Best Story". This makes all three parts of their 'Prince Rex' series to have been adjudged phan phavourite, an extraordinary result for Duncan in particular, these being his first three published stories. Dale Maccanti and Jason Paulos ' Rise of the Red Dragon proves to be incredibly popular with phans, achieving 2nd position in 2021 only three years after coming out on top in our 2018 poll, when it was first published. Life's Blood could be considered the surprise packet here, with Dean Rankine and Jeremy Macpherson 's fun little four-page filler in the Christmas Special sliding up into 6th place. 7 of the top 10 phavourite stories are original commissions by Frew. Phan votes for Best FREW Issue of 2021 According to the popular vote, where people nominated their Top 3 issues of the year: Points of note: Featuring the top cover and second-placed story it's no surprise that the Treasures of Drakon trade paperback would be the leader in the 'Best Issue' category too. For the first time since this annual poll began, the Annual does not feature in the top 3. The effect of Alex Trpcevski 's popularity would seem evident, with issues featuring his cover art finishing in positions 3, 4 and 5. ​ Overall Without question Trade Paperback 4 has to be declared the overall "winner" of 2021, placing top two in every category. The formula of collecting a popular serial from the past ( Pirates of the Red Dragon ), together with a prequel ( Rise of the Red Dragon ) and a brand new sequel ( The Adventure of the Dragon's Leg ) seems to be a winner with FREW's readers and it would surprise if they did not return to this productive well many times in the future. Thanks to all voters, and a huge "Well done!" to everyone who finished rear the top of any category - with Frew pumping out an amazing 32 books and 57 stories last year creating a highly competitive field, to emerge as a popular favourite is no mean feat. We present our video review of the Frew Generations Trading Cards. 27 cards of the past, present and future (dare we say phuture?) Phantoms including the twins Kit jnr, Heloise, 2040, Defenders of the Earth Phantoms and the robotic Phantom which debut in a Frew comic in issue #1893. I have given these cards a 4.5 Good Marks out of five. You can buy the cards here via Frew 's website The artwork by Jeff Weigel is top class - he has a great style and is a perfectionist in the way he draws. Even if you do not like the different style Phantom costumes which we first saw in 191st Sunday story " The Visitor " his artwork works as product and will be a great addition to any phans collection. The visual aspect of the cards are top notch, each card (even the index 28th card) is printed and shiny as a chase trading card. The price tags means each card is less than $2 each which is quality for money. The highlight card for me is the 2040 card, with the clouds and the buildings in the background, it gives the card a 3D effect. I would have personally liked to see the 13th Phantom and the 6th Phantom card design feature what they are famous for. The 13th Phantom has been dubbed as the finest swordsman but is carrying a knife and the 6th Phantom founded the Jungle Patrol. The only real negative I have is I do not personally agree with some of the information on the back of each card giving the phan a brief biography on each Phantom. The cards have the 4th Phantom marrying Princess Pura. The only Lee Falk story featuring her by name is the 122nd Phantom Sunday story titled " The Third Phantom " featuring the 3rd Phantom marrying Pura. Lee Falk has mentioned in past stories that the 4th and 11th also married an Indian maharajah's daughter which is where it gets confusing. It must be said I agree with the plan of merging the Lee Falk and Team Fantomen universes together and apart from the small personal disagreements they have done a top job. While trading cards are not as popular as the 1990's, majority of phans still like them and with the success of the Frew Generations collector cards , it is no surprise to see Frew releasing another collector card set. Here is our review of the cards that highlight the different Phantom costumes throughout the years from 14 different countries. Please note, we do not call these trading cards but instead collector cards seeing they do not come in blind bags like the Frew Gallery trading cards released in 2019. You can buy these from the Frew website here for $30AU +GST ($23US, 22Euro, 230 SEK/NOK). These are 18x cards featuring art by Sal Velluto and are shiny foil cards which were first for sale at the recent Sydnova 2022 event ( our review of the event ). Back in 2016, Sal Velluto posted on Facebook that he was after something for a special project. He wrote... I need to complete an accurate list of the countries where each version of The Phantom's uniform has been published. Specifically, I need to know for each version of the costume, ( indicated in the picture by a number) the first country of publication and all the other countries where that costume has been published. This is for a surprise project, coming soon. 6 years later, the secret project has arrived. Sal also mentioned this project in our X-Band: The Phantom Podcast episode #125 without giving anything away. Did anyone remember these hints? If I had to be picky, it would have been nice to see the Phantom embossed and maybe more information about each country but that would have taken away from the image of the first country of each country. In Frew #1925 , a new poster is advertised to celebrate the boxing issue with the classic " The Masked Marvel " reprint in colour & the new sequel story " Until the Final Bell: Requim for a Masked Heavyweight " by Paul Mason . You can buy the poster here It costs $25AU plus postage ($17US, 17EU & 180nok/sek). Anyone that knows about Paul Mason , knows he is a huge boxing fan. It got us curious if there was inspiration and a story behind it. You guessed it, there was and a huge thanks to Paul for allowing us into his mind to explore the story behind the poster. Please note, The X-Band: The Phantom Podcast Episode #228 will feature Paul Mason chatting with us about this much anticipated story that has been in the works for multiple years. Paul had the following to say about his poster inspiration and design: The poster references two designs (though most fight posters of the day were common); it has elements of Joe Louis vs Rocky Marciano fight film poster, and I (Paul) based the phantom’s stance on Ali for his 1975 autobio movie poster. The term “ fight of the century ”, I know had been used in three previous fights at least: Louis vs Marciano , but primarily though, it was Frazier vs Ali 1971. I know we’ll have a podcast shortly where I’ll outlay the thoughts on the time period and boxing at the point of Falk’s story vs my own and where it was in the real world, but just wanted to pull from those references. And though fight posters were usually yellow and red (I did do a yellow version which I had in a promo email when I thought the story was coming out in Frew #1923 ) or black and white (it was originally black and white before the decision of Frew to make it a colour book), I chose to colour it a little more modern- seemingly more uncommon than if you googled fight posters from the eras, but better for a potential poster, with Frew has gone and printed. Though it would make sense to put the other fighter on the poster too, the marketing of the promotors would have wanted to trade off “ The Masked Marvel ”, so I was happy to just feature that fighter - again, like the Ali film poster which in itself, was designed a bit like a fight poster. the speckle/grimy look was because I wanted the poster to look a bit old or like it was stick up in a boxing gym, with sweat from a nearby fighter skipping or sparring or bag work near it flicking onto the wall. Before the individual results, a serving of kudos for team at Frew While not quite matching the herculean feat of last year when every single cover, story and issue received at least one vote from the public, you would have to say that they've still managed to tickle most of our fancies: ALL 31 covers received votes (i.e. in someone's top 3) 50 of 54 stories received votes (i.e. in someone's top 5) ALL 31 issues received votes (i.e. in someone's top 3) It certainly seems that Frew are employing a winning formula when it comes to broad phan appeal. Phan votes for Best FREW Cover of 2022 According to the popular vote, where people nominated their Top 3 covers of the year: Points of note: Voters are telling us that variety is the spice of life, with Matt Kyme 's minimalist cover edging a narrow victory over Lauren Marshall 's action-packed and detailed image. With 2022 being the first year that Frew have published a female cover artist (there were six in total by year's end), it feels only appropriate that they filled three of our top six favourites. The decision to have Glenn Ford create the covers for the Replica Series issues has proven to be a winner, with two of these images seeing Glenn as the only artist to feature multiple times in the top 10. For a third year in a row, 9 of the top 11 positions were taken by Australian artists. Phan votes for Best FREW Story of 2022 According to the popular vote, where people nominated their Top 5 stories of the year: Points of note: Matt Kyme 's prowess and popularity as a Phantom writer is there for all to see. His 1-2 finish this year shows that his previous achievements with "Diana and the Heartbreaker Gang" (4th in 2021) and "A Day at the Races" (2nd in 2019) were no fluke. This is the first time in this history of this poll (run since 2018) that a serialised story has taken out first place. It is an extraordinary achievement for a pair of Lee Falk / Wilson McCoy classics - from 1948 and 1956 respectively - to finish in the top 5 favourite stories of 2022. However before Messrs Falk and McCoy get too carried away making heavenly toasts with their glasses of milk: the only stories to receive 0 votes were four other reprints of their collaborations, all from the various replica series through the year. For the second year in a row, 7 of the top 10 phavourite stories are original commissions by Frew. Phan votes for Best FREW Issue of 2022 According to the popular vote, where people nominated their Top 3 issues of the year: Points of note: Featuring the favourite cover to go with the second-placed story, it's no surprise that #1930 would share the lead in the 'Best Issue' category. It does seem fitting that the Masked Marvel special, featuring the third-placed cover as well as favourite stories 3 and 4, should tie in first place. Congratulations to Paul Mason for his thoughtful and creative additions to a Lee Falk favourite. This is the first time in the history of the poll (begun in 2018) that we have had a tie for first place, Despite increased costs, longer 'special' issues remain popular with phans. It has been an incredibly creative year for FREW in 2022. As publisher Dudley Hogarth points out in his Message from the Publisher in the Christmas Special (#1934), the Australian company can be proud of releasing a number of new Phantom stories and artwork among their 2022 publishing schedule. In fact, the raw stats show that Dudley was being typically modest in his assessment of "at least a dozen brand new stories" published this year. Of the 59 unique stories published across all formats, 17 are brand new and commissioned by Frew, well outstripping that "dozen" suggestion. The Graphic Novel release The Ghost and the Monster starts the conversation, but this number also includes the six stories in Pidde Anderson and Percy Ochoa 's Belle Epoque series, as well as no fewer than four sequels to Lee Falk classics. Speaking of which, Frew still managed to publish 30 Falk stories for the rusted on phans! In terms of covers: Frew showcased the talents of 20 different artists across their 26 regular issues, with only Ivan Rodriguez , Jason Paulos , Glenn Lumsden and Glenn Ford providing more than one cover in that series. Impressively, no fewer than six artists made their debut on a Frew cover this year - all of them female. Headlined by internationally renowned Nicola Scott , this was another first for Frew in 2022. Of course, this all begs the questions - what were our favourites? Well, for the fifth year in a row, the Frew Crew and the Chronicle Chamber team are keen to know what you thought of this year's Phantom releases. What were your FREW Favourite's of 2022 ?
