- Are we going to get a new Phantom Publisher?
Eagle eyed fan Jon Cookson spied an announcement from the creators of the 80th Dublin Con Phantom comic that they may be releasing another Phantom comic. Apart from the below image all they have quoted on their Facebook page is Stay tuned for our exciting new line-up of titles coming soon. The promo image also shows that we will see the comic in May 2017 which is only a few short months away. Now while the Facebook post is ambiguous on purpose all bodes well that we may end up getting another publisher publishing Phantom comics. As you can see with the attached image, the arms crossed pose, the mask, the cowl and the wrist bands are all classic Phantom-ish in style and design. The team at Chronicle Chamber have been in contact with the brains at Lighting Strike Comic Books and we will update you as soon as we know more. Thanks to Jon Cookson for the spot! #DublinComicCon #LightningStrikeComics #80th
- New Phantom Comic Storage Box - UPDATE
About a month ago, we reported that longtime Phantom phan Kelby Wooldridge was in the design stage of a new Phantom comic storage box. Kelby is still working hard on getting the design off the ground, although his efforts have been slowed a little as overseas manufacturers closed to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It could be another month before a prototype is available. However, Kelby has certainly listened to phan feedback, "I'm changing the appearance to be like an encyclopedia [or] old book with an area to put content details on the spine." He is also looking into the possibility of a kickstarter campaign to help fund the production costs. As you can see from the initial designs (below), the plan is for a hard cardboard storage box that will sit on the bookshelf like a normal book. It is intended to hold 13 comics plus an annual special. “There will be an area on the front and back to put information or sticker of artwork,” says Kelby, “Each box will have like a frame around the front and back … in different colours.” Buyers will be able to decorate the cover with whatever artwork they choose. “[The boxes] will fit Phantom, Marvel and DC comics in them. Also later down the track I want to get plastic sleeves and backing boards for the comics. The boxes are deep enough to hold the comics with these.” Tentative costs will be around $15-$20 each, depending on phan interest (postage not included). With quite a large minimum order required to start producing these, Kelby is keen to share costs with the wider community and to keep these down as much as possible, hence the kickstarter idea. “I myself am a collector so this would be helpful to me … postage could be minimised by sending them to one location per state as a bulk order.” Anyone who would be interested in purchasing these to store their collection, or perhaps even assist with distribution as a state representative, should contact Kelby by email.
- Hero Complex Tour Begins
Sammy J's tour of his award-winning show Hero Complex starts this week, and so the Australian comedian has filmed a series of promotional short video clips featuring the Phantom. The first of these was published on his Facebook page earlier today; you can watch it here. The amusing promo features a Phantom who is clearly very devoted to the Old Jungle Saying "Call the Phantom anywhere and he will hear". It's a light-hearted but very respectful interpretation of our hero, and we at ChronicleChamber can't wait to see more. Sammy has told us that "there'll be one per week", so be sure to be checking his Facebook page regularly for the latest installment! Sammy is staying very quiet on the true identity of the man in the purple suit in his promos. He has been "unable to confirm or deny" any suggestions, but one suspects it could be someone close to the story. However, he is "pretty excited that we got the white mask working. Take that, Billy Zane and Tom Tyler!" The music used in the short clip is from The Phantom, a song Sammy wrote for Hero Complex. You can hear the full version (with lyrics) on the latest episode of X-Band: The Phantom Podcast, and the mp3 is downloadable for all Patreons of ChronicleChamber.com - just click this link to pledge and you can be listening to it on your own device in minutes. It is a phitting coincidence that the Hero Complex tour starts on Friday 17th February, the 81st anniversary of The Phantom appearing in newspapers. The scenestr website has previewed Hero Complex here, and of course you can read ChronicleChamber's own review of the show as it appeared at the Melbourne Fringe Festival here. In other news regarding the tour, Sammy J has added a Canberra date to those previously announced. Fantomen (Swedish Phantom comic) and Fantomet have always held competitions for the best stories and cover and with today's technology we who live outside of Norway and Sweden can participate and help shape with our vote on the trend of the stories we see in Frew comics and Fantomen/ t comics in the future. Even if you do not speak or read Norwegian/ Swedish you can still vote. Go to Fantomen.org and Fantomet.info using Google Chrome and you can right click and choose 'Translate To English'. The best way to identify which story is which, go to the Phantomwiki page and it will list all the Fantomen issues and it lists the stories in their native Swedish along with the English title that is used by Frew. - New Phantom Comic Storage Box on the way?
Long-time The Phantom comic collector Kelby Wooldridge has had enough! Frustrated with the options available to store his prized collection, Kelby has come up with his own solution and has commissioned a prototype. Now he is seeking interest from other phans to see if this is something that he could produce and order on a large scale and share his vision with the Phantom and broader comic collecting community. As you can see from the initial designs (below), the plan is for a hard cardboard storage box that will sit on the bookshelf like a normal book. It is intended to hold 13 comics plus an annual special. “There will be an area on the front, back and spine to put information or sticker of artwork,” says Kelby, “Each box will have like a frame around the front and back … in different colours. Black, red, green, blue and yellow.” Buyers will be able to decorate the cover with whatever artwork they choose. “[The boxes] will fit Phantom, Marvel and DC comics in them. Also later down the track I want to get plastic sleeves and backing boards for the comics. The boxes are deep enough to hold the comics with these.” Kelby has run the idea past both Frew Publications and King Features Syndicate. “With Frew [and] the recent change of ownership they just have too much already on their plate … and the cost is initially prohibitive [to license them through KFS]”. Tentative costs will be around $15-$20 each, depending on phan interest (postage not included). With quite a large minimum order required to start producing these, Kelby is keen to share costs with the wider community and to keep these down as much as possible. “I myself am a collector so this would be helpful to me … postage could be minimised by sending them to one location per state as a bulk order.” Anyone who would be interested in purchasing these to store their collection, or perhaps even assist with distribution as a state representative, should contact Kelby by email. #KingFeaturesSyndicate
- New Phantom Figure from D's Custom
One of the better looking Phantom figurines to ever hit the market is available for pre-order now. Phans who browse the various Facebook groups dedicated to the Ghost Who Walks, particularly ChronicleChamber's own PhantomCollector page, have been privileged enough to see this unfold and develop. Jerome Dizon, who has conceived and commissioned the fully articulated 1/6 scale figure through his company D's Custom, has been teasing phans with progress photos over the last few months. Around the turn of the new year, Dizon announced that the prototype was complete and that he was now ready to take pre-orders for a very exclusive and limited run. As the photos in the gallery below demonstrate, Dizon is justifiably proud of the finished product, "Our custom made Ghost who Walks is made out of ORIGINAL head sculpt, original tailored costume, original sculpted Devil and [very limited] Skull Throne. Accessories (boots, knife, belt) are also hand made, even the rings on both hands ... all hand made, built from scratch. It took D's Custom at least 2 months to complete the project. For the body, we used Hot toys muscular type fully articulated body." It's a project he has been happy to lead. "It was my original idea to produced the figure. Living in Australia almost all my life I know how big The Phantom phanbase [is] and also know that there is little merchandise, especially a fully articulated 1/6 figure ... I'm guessing all the big boys (major companies) do not want to take the risk to produce one." One of the joys of watching the prototype in development has been the way in which Jerome has responded to phan feedback. Devil has grown considerably in size after a comment that mountain wolves would be larger, while another response to phan feedback was to announce that purchasers would be able to choose between traditional "white" eyes in the mask, or "visible" eyes as per Billy Zane's portrayal in the 1996 film. Only 25 of these high-quality figures are going to be produced: 15 of these will be the Phantom figure with guns, belt, knife and Devil; the other 10 will also include the Skull Throne. At the time of writing, 6 of the 10 Skull Throne sets have already been spoken for, while only 10 of the 15 figure-only sets remain available. As you might expect with such a good looking product produced on a very limited run, these are only for phans with deep pockets. The Skull Throne set is priced at $AU750 while the regular figure is $AU600. Both are sold with free shipping Australia-wide; international orders will pay registered postage. PayPal is the only accepted mode of payment. Many phans will be disappointed that these are not licensed by King Features, nor are they mass produced and more affordable for us to buy them. Jerome Dizon also laments not being able to deliver these, citing the costs involved. Nonetheless, phans lucky enough to add one of these to their Treasure Room will be acquiring a very special piece indeed. Any phans wanting to place a deposit and pre-order their figure should contact Dizon via email - interested Sydney-siders are invited to make arrangements to see the prototype in the flesh. #Toys #Devil #1996movie #BillyZane
- The Phantom on Display
Two of the best The Phantom gallery exhibitions of recent times are back in 2017! In Australia, three years after Bradley Peach's Phantom collection was displayed at the Albury museum, it is back! And on the other side of the globe, the hugely successful Swedish exhibition curated by Martin Dahlström that started in 2016 will return. This time the display is solely focused on, in my opinion, the most underrated Phantom artist: Wilson McCoy. Dahlström's 2016 exhibition is considered small compared to what is planned for 2017 at the cultural city Borås prestigious Art Museum just outside of Gothenburg. This will be the world's largest full-length presentation of Wilson McCoy in a museum context from Saturday February 11 to end of May. Some of the features of the exhibition will be several McCoy images in giant billboard format. The entire collection clearly shows how McCoy inspired art through and after his lifetime. It will all be housed in a 300 square metre space - 10 times bigger than the 2016 exhibition. Meanwhile, Bradley Peach's exhibition may not be bigger than his previous one in 2014, but it will still be worth attending with his wonderful collection from the around the world and throughout the years on display. The exhibition will also be interactive with some amazing Fun days! There will be three wall spaces of artwork (one wall will include a panel from each of Luke McDonnell’s 1989-1990 DC Series, plus a commission of the Phantom on the Skull Throne; 14 artworks in total from McDonnell). There will also be about eight display cabinets of The Phantom memorabilia throughout the Library. One will include the Albury Wodonga Phantom Softball Team. Peach's exhibition will run from Saturday 14 January to Saturday 4 March 2017. The BIG day worth attending is on 25 February with a Phantom Fun Morning and a tour by Bradley Peach - details in the image below. The other events are: Mask Making - Tuesday 17 January. 2:30pm-3:30pm Constructing a Comic - Thursday 19 January. 2:30pm-3:30pm #WilsonMcCoy #GodfatherofPop #BradleyPeach #LukeMcDonnell #MartinGoldbeckLöwe
- Update on Phantom Trading Cards
Ever since the teaser card was included in Frew's 80th Anniversary Special, Phantom phans have been waiting with bated breath for the Phantom Gallery Series 2 set of trading cards that have been commissioned by Glenn Ford's Phanfare. Unfortunately, despite the promised 'coming this Xmas' statement made on the teaser card, we are now in January and there is still no sign of the cards. No one is more frustrated with this than Ford himself: "I've been waiting for two artists to finish up their other commitments before they can get to this card series. I'm now off to the printers - who are back from holidays next week. It's a complicated job, from a printer's perspective, so I anticipate it'll be on sale in March." While it is a little disappointing that these cards are a few months behind schedule, it's probably best to keep these things in perspective. After all, the Phantom Gallery Series 1 cards were released over 20 years ago. Another month or two to wait for Series 2 surely won't make that much of a difference! #TradingCards #Phanfare
- The Phantom makes a Big Bash
The Phantom has made an unexpected appearance in the Big Bash League, Australia's domestic Twenty20 cricket competition. During the second innings of Monday night's match between the Perth Scorchers and the Sydney Thunder, talk in the commentary box turned to a rumoured "mystery ball" that Scorchers strike bowler Andrew Tye has been developing. The story was that Tye has been working on a new delivery that he's nicknamed "The Phantom". Tye is a cagey bowler in the shortest version of the game, and is known for experimenting with different ball grips and arm speeds to keep the batters guessing. The Channel 10 BBL commentary team, comprising Mark Howard, Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh, were highly entertained by the prospect of a new delivery. They immediately fell to speculating about the delivery and the origin of the name. It seems the commentators need to brush up on their pop culture references! Renowned punter Waugh immediately recalled the New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse The Phantom, who finished second in the 1990 Melbourne Cup and in 1994 was named New Zealand Horse of the Year. Howard was probably closest to the mark when he asked "The Phantom... wasn't that a cartoon?", while Gilchrist remembered that former Australian captain and iconic Nine Network commentator Bill Lawry was nicknamed "The Phantom" during his playing days. After the following advertising break, Howard announced that a viewer had texted through to remind the team that Lawry's nickname was derived from his love of The Phantom comic book and finally the penny dropped. However while they were able to dredge up the Ghost Who Walks moniker, neither Waugh or Gilchrist could respond when Howard asked "What was the name of his dog?" (sigh). During the 14th over, bowled by Tye, the commentary team were able to have an on-field conversation with Michael Klinger, stand-in captain of the Scorchers, who was wearing a Channel 10 microphone. They asked about Tye's new "Phantom" ball. Klinger claimed he had never heard of it, and laughed when Waugh asked him to instruct Tye to bowl it during the over. Within minutes Klinger approached Tye and told him, "You're on mike. They want to see this Phantom ball you've been working on." Tye laughed, went to the top of his mark and delivered what appeared to be a variation of his famous knuckle ball. Unfortunately, the ball floated slowly down the pitch and was immediately deposited into the twelth row of the grandstand by Thunder debutant Jay Lenton for an enormous 6. The commentary team immediately joked that the "Phantom" ball would never be seen again, and that Tye would bury the delivery. But as reported on the BBLs official website, Tye says the Phantom never actually made an appearance. "I can't give too much away," Tye told cricket.com.au. "It's a work in progress and the moment and, as the name suggests, the Phantom – it might not even be true." Does it exist or not? That is indeed the essence of The Phantom. Perhaps Andrew Tye's mystery ball "The Phantom" will truly be the 'Ball That Cannot Die'.
- The Phantom Hero Candle
