Look, there's no denying that it's been too long between drinks when it comes to updating the Phantom Preservation Project (P3). The reality is that digitising the almost 90-year history of The Phantom and all the various 'references to' or 'appearances of' that our favourite character makes is a monumental task that involves a very serious undertaking. It's also worth noting that the collection of resources was already very substantial! The sheer gigabytes of data we're compiling here has meant we've had to upgrade plans and increase memory space available. Germany now has their FOURTH Phantom comic title out! We currently have Wick Publications releasing new and never before seen Bastei comics, Zauberstern releasing newspaper, Team Fantomen, Moonstone and Frew created stories, ECR releasing reprint Sy Barry and Lee Falk classic stories and now Kult Comics are releasing a collection on famous French artist Jean-Yves Mitton. What a time to be a phan in Germany! Released from Kult Comics is a publication very similar to the French hard-cover book published in 2022 but will only feature four of Jean-Yves Mitton's Phantom stories. Perhaps if this sells well, we will see a second book released. The books are currently available via pre order on their website with deliveries taking place from 3 December 2023. At the risk of stepping on the toes of the excellent blogger Joseph Nebus, there’s a plot development in The Phantom Daily strip that I just need to comment on. It’ll be easiest to follow my thoughts if you’re at least loosely up to date with the epic seven-part Wrack and Ruin series that is entering its final stages, with an estimated eight weeks to run at the time of writing. In recent weeks of what I'm calling Chapter 7: The Journey Home (Daily 264), the Phantom and Diana have returned home to the Deep Woods and the Skull Cave with the liberated Savarna Devi ... liberated from Gravelines, liberated from her revenge lust, and liberated from her clothes. Boyish titillation achieved, and for some readers it sparked up the memory of almost this exact same scene ahem dialogue from Chapter 2 of the saga, The Chronicle of Old Man Mozz from December 2021. If you’ve missed ALL the other clues that Tony De Paul has been planting along the way, you couldn’t possibly miss this! The prophesy of Old Man Mozz is still very much in play. Which brings me to the point of this post – a little theory I’ve developed if you will. Follow me as I connect some dots... We know that the chain of events that Mozz originally foretold has changed. The Phantom did not deliriously reveal Kit’s whereabouts and so Savarna has not stormed off to Tibet, a path that leads to the death of Phantom 21 and the end of The Phantom line. She might go still, but hasn’t yet. But there was another possible ending given in Chapters 4 & 6 – one where Diana leaves and it seems that Savarna steps in, fulfilling her erstwhile fantasy of connecting with Phantom 21 and producing Phantom heirs of her own. But is all as it seems? Here’s my theory, a guess really, at yet another twist in the tale. I wonder if Savarna and Kit Jr becoming an item might fit within Mozz's prophesy of her becoming The Phantom's wife. Maybe, just maybe, Savarna ends up marrying Phantom 22. I wondered about a possible romantic attraction between Savarna and Kit Jr when they interacted with each other as she arrived at the Skull Cave before being pulled apart by his parents a week or so ago. Now of course that seemed like Phantom and Diana had recognised a little of the prophesy emerging from Chapter 3 Death in the Himalayas January 2021: But now on the day of writing, Tuesday 21 November 2023, it seems that the attraction between them might be at least a little bit more adult. Now, the natural assumption we readers made back when Mozz was prophesising was that Savarna became part of the Phantom lineage by replacing Diana, but maybe she's actually destined for Kit.... There is another clue indicating that this could be a good hunch. Turning again to Death in the Himalayas, in that pesky alternate and disastrous timeline, we learned that Kit has always had a crush on the femme fatale in this clever flashback-within-a-foretelling. So maybe there is a chance at love here? Is this actually where the strip is going? Probably not, but who knows. Let’s entertain the possibility for just a moment. Could this pairing of characters work? Savarna is clearly Kit’s elder. But how much older? Personally, I've probably always assumed she was a good 10-15 years older than the twins. But with the way they’re shown in the above panel she could be even 20 years their senior. Mike Manley’s depiction in that flashback panel "could" have the twins somewhere between 10 and 14 years old, while she could easily be early-mid 30s. Savarna has had a romantic interest in Phantom 21 since she was first introduced into the Phantom universe back in 2009 (Crocco Island West Daily 225). She has appeared in a total of twelve Daily stories (admittedly six of those are in this saga) and has consistently had a bit of an old-school flirty relationship with him. As a result, for mine she has always seemed to be about the same age as Phantom 21, something I probably just assumed. That’s part of why it seemed plausible for her to "replace" Diana in the prophesy. Not palatable perhaps, but plausible. So – Savarna as “the older woman” becoming the mother of Phantom 23? If we go long and say she’s 20 years older than Kit Jr, who’s 19-20 now, simple biology says they’d need to hook up soon in order to have that child. But it’s possible. Plenty of phans might say that’s not any more agreeable than Savarna taking over Diana’s side of the bed, especially given the apparent age difference. There’s certainly more than a few regular readers hoping that Kadia, Heloise’s best friend and daughter of a past Phantom foe Eric “The Nomad” Sahara, might be Kit Jr’s future bride. But – it’s certainly possible within the current story trajectory. In fact, if you go back and look at that the two “Savarna’s pregnant” sequences from earlier in the story and put Kit Jr behind the mask as Phantom 22, it still makes sense and only requires the prophesy to be incorrect or altered by one Phantom generation. Chapter 4 Phantom's End June 2022: Chapter 6 Dungeons Undone March 2023: Kit Jr could be under the cowl, and Diana could be upset that her son is going to end up with someone who's been a bit of a thorn in her side for quite a while now. Is Savarna hooking up with Kit Jr what I want as a reader? Probably not (#TeamKadia all the way!) but with all the twists and turns in the Wrack and Ruin saga, I won’t be discounting the possibility … at least not until next month when I am almost certainly proven incorrect and have connected the dots in all the wrong ways. Mikael Lyck from Chronicle Chamber reviews Fantomen 24/2023 which featuring the following stories: "Den allseende ögonstenen" ("The Allseeing Eyestone") by Jacob Habinc and Janusz Ordon An amazing cover that looks like a painting by Janusz Ordon. His covers have been great. Any early suggestions on your phavourite Fantomen cover for 2023? In the editorial page editor Andreas Eriksson writes about the recent book fair in Sweden including the good news that all the Fantomen books were sold out by Saturday! The Phantom story in this issue is a new one by Jacob Habinc and Janusz Ordon "Den allseende ögonstenen" ("The Allseeing Eyestone") This adventure sees the 3rd Phantom chase after some kidnappers that took the prince of Wambesi. He learns that it was a ruse to get him to Italy where a very self confident man wants to do a series of challenges with the Phantom and it seems that he has the upper hand. A bit different way to tell a Phantom story, I liked it. Second part of the issue was a new album with La Venin (the poisoner), I liked this already after the first time this was in Fantomen and it is still great, part 2 will appear in the next issue. Speaking of next issue, in the preview section we see that we will read the Sunday story "The Ingeunes" by Tony DePaul and Jeff Weigel, we will also read the classic Team Fantomen story "The Prisoner in Marrakech" and the sequel to Pidde Anderssons Belle Epoque suite. We will also get the last part of the La Venin (the poisoner) story by Laurent Astier. After the success of the first Finnish Album released in May 2023, the second album has now been released. The book will be available from February 2024. You can watch our review of the first album here. This album will feature four classic 1975 to 1977 adventures written by Ulf Granberg and also contain an interview by him. The four stories are: "Revenge of the Vultures" is a 1975 Team Fantomen story, written by Ulf Granberg, with art by Bertil Wilhelmsson. "The Double" is a 1975 Team Fantomen story, written by Ulf Granberg, with art by Heiner Bade. "Son of the Desert" is a 1976 Team Fantomen story, written by Ulf Granberg and Jaime Vallvé, with art by Jaime Vallvé. "Escape from Devil's Island" is a 1977 Team Fantomen story, written by Heiner Bade and Ulf Granberg, with art by Heiner Bade. "The Double" has yet to been published in a Frew issue and the others have been previously published in West Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. 2018 saw the end of the regular Norwegian Fantomet magazine series after 1,217 issues which first started in 1964. Back then some comments was at least the Norwegian Fantomet Kronologisk series was still in print. However, now after 28 compilations issues it will also be ending. Now the only comic featuring the Phantom in Norway is the annual Christmas album. The 2023 Christmas album is now out and can be ordered from here at PlatekomPaniet.no for 99nok. The Fantomet Kronologisk reprints stories previously published in Fantomet, chronologically from 1964 and onwards. The issues printed in this compilation is 5-8 from 1972. Note, this series did not include new stories and is very similar to the Swedish and Australian series. Phans of The Phantom may have noticed a different art style slipping into the Daily story over the past week or so. Your eyes are not deceiving you – there has indeed been a temporary change in the creative team for the Daily comic strip. Regular artist Mike Manley has been in charge of the Daily since April 2016. Sadly, he has recently encountered some health issues and while we wish him a speedy recovery, adjustments have been made by King Features Syndicate to ensure that the Phantom's adventures continue uninterrupted. From the beginning of November, we'll be treated to several weeks of art by Bret Blevins, with lettering by Scott Cohn. These two talented individuals have again stepped in to maintain the continuity of Daily 264 “The Journey Home”, with their contributions keeping we readers engaged and entertained. As best as our untrained eyes can tell, it seems that Mike’s last strip was Saturday 28 October, with Bret taking the reins from Monday 30 October. As we trust you can see from the images below, certainly from Wednesday 1 November the style is unmistakably Bret’s. As alluded to above, Bret is by no means a newcomer to The Phantom strip. He worked as an uncredited inking assistant for Mike Manley in 2020 and 2021, and has even previously filled in for a few weeks when Mike was ill in 2022, during Daily 261 “Phantom’s End” - check out our post introducing Bret at the time. Scott Cohn has also helped out previously and indeed is actually a credited artist, as we explained in this post from 2022. Unfortunately, it seems that Mike’s absence from the strip will be an extended one. We have been made aware that from Monday November 20, the Daily strip will be passed on and entrusted to Jeff Weigel, who is already highly regarded as the artist for the Phantom's Sunday adventures. Jeff's creative talent is well-known to phans, and he's set to guide us through to the finale of Tony DePaul's extended ‘Wrack and Ruin’ series. We now have a good clue as to an end date for this long-running tale, with Mike letting us know that Jeff oversees the "last eight weeks of the story", which would see Daily 265 kicking off on Monday 15 January 2024. Whether or not that timing is exactly right, it is clear that we are approaching the conclusion of the epic 'Wrack and Ruin' adventure which began in mid-2021 and has run for an extraordinary two and a half years (albeit over six chapters). Jeff Weigel's artistic prowess is bound to bring a fresh and dynamic perspective to The Phantom's Daily escapades. We expect his unique style to add depth and excitement to the narrative. It is worth noting that this move sees Jeff join a very short list of The Phantom luminaries. Across the strip's 87-year history, he follows only Ray Moore, Wilson McCoy, Sy Barry, George Olesen, Fred Fredericks, and Paul Ryan in being responsible for both the Dailys and the Sundays simultaneously. While we look forward to experiencing the artistry of Bret Blevins, Scott Cohn, and then Jeff Weigel for the foreseeable future, our hearts and well wishes go out to Mike Manley during his recovery. It is wonderful to see Mike on the mend via his Facebook page, where he shared the following information with family, friends and phans on the evening of Friday 3 November: "Jeff Weigel has stepped in to finish the last eight weeks of the story, since I was unable to keep up the pace, but I will be returning to the [The Phantom] with a brand new story with Tony, which should start towards the end of the year." On behalf of all phans we at Chronicle Chamber look forward to Mike returning to full health and back on the strip for the next story beginning in late 2023/early 2024.

News just in that there will be a new Phantom publication in Denmark next year. From the images and text released on their socials and website it looks like a hard cover version of the 2021 Fantomen softcover album Hård mot de hårda. This is the first Phantom publication in Denmark since 2001. The publishers of the new book is E-voke, a small company founded in 2018 run by a husband and wife couple. Their mission is to "evoke" an interest to comic books in Denmark. We at Chronicle Chamber will try to get a copy as soon as it gets released to do a review.

The second part of the editorial page is about the bronze match in the recent world football championship and how a certain podcast suggested a bet about the colour of the Phantom costume should be based on the result. In the end the stakes was to high, but after the win we felt that at least that day the suit was blue. The plot goes with a jungle expedition with a kidnapped girl and a Nazi getting punched in the face, what could be better than that? Maybe multiple Nazi's getting punched? Fantomen 22-23/2023 Very unique cover by a first time Phantom artist Adrian Malmgren. Do you like it? This ssue contains alot including the final stories in the Belle epoque suite. "Belle epoque del 6: Gargoylen från Notre Dame" ("The Gargoyle of Notre Dame") by Pidde Andersson and Percy Ochoa This story was first published in Frew #1923, and was reviewed by us in episode #226. In my opinion this story might be the best part of the series, it is a joy to read and gives information about the hideout in Notre-Dame in a clever and fun way. Including a new "Karl Kämpe" story by Jörgen Karlsson and Rully Akbar. t is a short but sweet story, I love Karl Kämpe it is so great! Also includes a full story of "Undertaker" by Xavier Dorison and Ralph Meyer. I love these stories, I think the Wild West setting is nice even if it is almost done to death. "Belle epoque epilog: Jane räddar presidenten" ("Jane Saves the President") by Pidde Andersson and Percy Ochoa First published in Frew #1950, Reviewed by us in episode #259. Nice to see that Jane Carey aka the Phantom's wife also can save the day. In the Frew story, the tease to The Prisoner in Marakech was in the Gargoyle story, we get it here, and it seems that story will show up in the last issue of the year, looking forward to that! In the north of Australia there is a city called Bundaberg which not only is home to Shane Foley but also to a cool art gallery exhibition at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery. This gallery opens 18 November 2023 and runs until 4 February 2024. This event will house over 100 pieces of original Phantom artwork from Shane Foley's own hand plus other original artwork and merchandise from local Phantom collectors. Thanks to the readers of this website, a phan has provided a copy of Frew #1 which will be on display to see. Other merchandise will include an assortment of Phantom rings and Papua New Guinea Phantom war shields. Shane Foley has confirmed that his artwork being presented will be 11 original Frew covers, 50 to 60 interior pages and plenty of other roughs and preliminaries. This could well be the biggest collection of original Phantom comic artwork displayed for public viewing in Australia. We also have confirmation that there will be special sections of the exhibition including one on the female Phantoms of the universe, Kid Phantom and the showing of the 1943 Phantom serial. Phantom: Off the Drawing Board will take visitors on a thrilling journey through the mysterious and action-packed universe of The Phantom. With a rich international history spanning over eight decades, this immersive showcase delves into the Australian illustrators who have left their mark on the character, in particular Bundaberg based illustrator, Shane Foley. Curated by Gallery Director, Rebecca McDuff, with the support of Australian Frew Publications, this never-before-seen collection of original artworks, vintage comic covers, and rare memorabilia, provides a unique opportunity to explore the enduring legacy of this masked crusader and experience exclusive behind the scenes insights into the creative minds that bring this hero to life. Sy Barry, David Barry and Chronicle Chamber are joining forces to host a "Studio Session" fundraiser on Saturday 4 November at 7pm New York/EDT Time. This Studio session will host Sy Barry sketching live with other Phantom related guests raising money for the Dana Farber & the Jimmy Fund. If you would like to participate and attend the event, we are selling limited tickets for $30US each (one per person). These people who purchase tickets will also be in the running for one of the drawings drawn by raffle on the night. Tickets can be reserved and purchased by emailing us at ChronicleChamber@gmail.com. Once tickets are reserved and brought, instructions on how to join the evening will be sent to you. The full evening will be recorded for a podcast to be released at a later date.
