USA artist John Cassaday has passed at the young age of 52 and still at the peak of his powers. He may have only produced two Phantom covers for Moonstone and Fantomen in 1999 and 2003, however, we would like to still thank him for his work on our hero and for the wider comic community in general. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones and friends he has left behind. John Cassaday was "discovered" in 1996 at the Big Apple Comic Con and made a huge impact with his work on X-Men , Captain America , Planetary and much more. He received multiple Eagle and Eisner Awards and nominations for his work. You can learn more about his American DC and Marvel career at the AIPT website and or his wikipedia page . The obvious question may be how did John Cassaday draw a cover for Fantomen . From what we understand, the cover came about because of Ben Raab who was writing for Fantomen at the time, who then moved over to Moonstone before his TV work. Another thing that may interest some phans is that the original artwork for the Fantomen cover which you can see (right) was actually done in purple and required the editorial team in Sweden to change his colour to blue. The German publishers Zauberstern gives The Phantom a large presence in Central Europe. As you will find out when you read the interview, Zauberstern are also planning three extra new publications starting in 2025 to build on their success so far. Text & photos by Kristian Hellesund After many years away from the market, The Phantom is back with new magazines and comic books in 2022 in the German market. While other German Phantom publishers have a lower profile, Zauberstern ’s books are easy to find in the mass market at news agencies and kiosks in Germany, Austria and parts of Switzerland. Every second year the comics festival in Erlangen is held in Bavaria . This is the biggest comics festival in the German speaking sphere, and most publishers and the major comic book stores are present at the festival. Many artists and writers are also part of the festival, and there are many presentations, lectures and panel discussion. For many collectors, Erlangen is a must. Here you can meet artists and get sketches and autographs, and vintage comic books are easily found. [Editors note: You can read about the event here , written by Fantomen writer Bernd Frenz ] Zauberstern were among the publishers with a stand at the Erlangen festival earlier this Summer. There you could meet publisher Simeon Hrissomallis and his colleagues Charles Bone and Martin Schatke . The whole range of Zauberstern ’s comics were available, so back issue hunters could among others pick up the first 13 Phantom magazines and copies of the Flash Gordon magazine. A special gem was a limited edition of the original Defenders of the Earth miniseries in magazine size. While being at the festival, we had a talk with Simeon Hrissomallis and Charles Bone about Zauberstern , its publishing strategy and the future. Kristian Hellesund: How popular is The Phantom among Germans? Zauberstern: The Phantom has a huge tradition in Germany since the mid-fifties to the mid-eighties, so 30 years without interruption and as a result, of course, it has a large fan base in Germany and it is still very popular. KH: How has the reception been for your Phantom comics? Zauberstern: The response was very fantastic from the beginning, so outstandingly grandiose, it was hotly awaited because there was no Phantom Comic published in Germany for over 30 years and it was then also slowly time for the fans to be delivered to the purple hero again and the fans are very grateful. The numbers are very stable. And that's why there will even be a Phantom Special next year. This special will be available on the two-month change with the normal booklet, which will then also be filled with the Classics newspaper and Swedish stories. KH: I have seen your comic books at various kiosk and newsagents in Germany. Is it easy to get this kind of distribution? Zauberstern: To make it short. It is not hard. You just have to spend a lot of money because you have to print high numbers. For example, if you print a high circulation of 10,000-15,000 editions, you can assume that about a third will be sold. After the end of a run, you get the choice to get the unsold delivered back or to destroy and recycle them. It's a very expensive matter, so that’s why you can hardly find any small publishers in the newsagents anymore. KH: Your company publishes several titles at the moment. Could you tell us a bit about them? Zauberstern: Of course, we have the Phantom and Flash Gordon from King Features. Then we have Mikros , a French series from the 1980's by Jean-Yves Mitton , Savage Dragon by Eric Larson and Van Helsing by Zenescope . KH: You have been publishing The Phantom for two years now. Why did you initially choose The Phantom? Zauberstern: Because the Phantom is one of the great heroes. He is known all over the world and is, in my eyes, on a par with Spiderman , Batman , Superman , Flash Gordon . And yes, he is one of the very first heroes, You could say, the grandfather of all superheroes. That is why it was a shame that the Phantom was not published for decades in Germany. That's why I decided in favor of the Phantom, because I was aware that there must be a market for it and the fans have confirmed that. KH: Do you have any connection to The Phantom from your youth? Zauberstern: Yes, of course, I also read the comics as a child/adolescent, but didn't collect the comics until I was at an older age. KH: You publish various versions of The Phantom? Why do you choose doing this and not keeping yourself to for instance American newspaper stories only or comics from Team Fantomen in Sweden ? Zauberstern: The Phantom has many facets and I would like to publish the material from the last 30 years that was and is available in America , as well as from Sweden , Australia and the comic strips. It's the diversity that makes up the Phantom. And that's why we will always publish Phantom stories from different countries. KH: Is it difficult to choose Phantom comics to publish? Zauberstern: No not really. (Charles here, his words. To make it a bit longer, there are so much fine and awesome material out there in the world, it is not hard to choose) KH: Do you do all the pre-press work in-house, or do you have help getting proofs and other materials to print? Zauberstern: We are a publishing house, but I have a lot of freelancers who works for Zauberstern Comics . They do it really well. These include our editor Martin Schatke , our graphics team and translator team Alexis Heimberg , Tom Rippert and Charles Bone . One example of the freelancers that may be known to some phans include Ivan Pedersen who has coloured stories we have printed. KH: Do you colour your comics yourself or do you use the original colours? Zauberstern: No we don't colour or re-colour very often. With the story " The Haunted Castle " by Roy Felmang , which was a remake of a Lee Falk and Ray Moore / Wilson McCoy Sunday story included colours by Ivan Pedersen in issue 13. This story was originally printed in black and white in The Phantom's World Special No. 11 (2020). KH: Have you thought about using original and new stories made in Germany? Zauberstern: Yes, we have and had discussions with artists in Erlangen at the Comic Salon. We can't yet say whether it can be realized. Only time will tell. KH: Norway has some writers and artists making Phantom stories. Do you recognize and like some of these creators? Will some of their stories be printed by Zauberstern ? Zauberstern: Yes, I know and admire many artists from Norway . But I can't yet say whether and which stories will be printed. KH: The newest Swedish Fantomen magazine had a story where The Phantom met Der Wolf ( Varg Veum ) in Bergen, Norway . Is this a story you are going to publish? Zauberstern: I can't say at the moment. Anything is possible. (Journalist’s comment: The story has come out in Australia in Frew ’s The Phantom #1978 ) KH: Your Phantom magazine is published bi-monthly. Will a monthly publication be a possibility? Zauberstern: No, we're not going to do that. For reasons of cost and conception. However from 2025, we will publish another bi-monthly magazine with the newspaper strip stories, which will include a daily and a Sunday. This new series will also be published every two months, alternating with the current magazine. It will have 68 pages of content so that Phantom fans can have their regular dose of Phantom every month. On top of this new magazine, from the spring of 2025, every three months we will publish a Phantom album, with a size of 52 to 68 pages. In this album, majority of the stories will be Team Fantomen Swedish stories. That means from 2025, we will publish 16 Phantom publications a year, twelve magazines and four albums. That is what the fans have been asking for and that's what we want to do for the fans. KH: There are other publishers making publications with The Phantom in Germany. What is different with Zauberstern compared to them? Zauberstern: We naturally have the magazine trade, station kiosks and specialist comic shops as our distribution channels, while the other publishers limit themselves to online retailers and specialist comic shops as they have smaller print runs. Everyone is focused on what they do best. KH: What Phantom story will you never publish and why? Zauberstern: I cannot and do not want to answer this question, as it cannot be answered.

The Swedish Fantomen Christmas Album is the longest ongoing Phantom comic series in the world beating the Swedish regular series and the Frew comic with their first Christmas Album coming out in 1944. On the Jultidnings Forlaget website we see the 2024 Christmas Album for future orders. They have listed the book at 99 sek ($15Au & $10US/EU). The album will be available to buy at shops and other website providers from November. The cover for this Christmas cover is drawn by Luca Erbetta . There has been nearly 100 different artefacts shown or have had stories written about them. When the room was conceived by Lee Falk , the world was crazy coming off the second world war with various looted treasures being found. However is that still the case and should they be returned? Announced in early 2024, the book “ Lee Falk – The Comic’s Legend ” ( Lee Falk – A Lenda dos Quadrinhos ) is already one of the most talked-about Brazilian publications of the year. We have been informed that there are limited copies left and to contact Gonçalo Junior , the author via WhatsApp message at +55 (11) 91589-4479. Gonçalo Junior , the author, is a journalist and writer who is highly respected by Brazilian readers, having written several works on the history of comics in Brazil, as well as biographies of important comics personalities, singers and other names of cultural relevance. According to Gonçalo , Lee Falk is one of the most important names in comics worldwide, however there has been limited works that tell his life story. In fact, he found mentions of a single work about Falk, but it was completely out of print. Through research in archives, Gonçalo found interesting information that allowed him to trace Falk’s trajectory; in addition to this information, he also found three major interviews given by Falk, and thus it was possible to reconstruct his story with data perhaps never before gathered in a single place. Over the course of 320 richly illustrated pages, we learn about Falk's formative years, how he was hired by King Features Syndicate , his relationship with theater, his marriages, and his way of working on the Mandrake and Phantom comics. We also discover Falk's role in the fight for civil rights for black people in the United States, at a time when racism was almost seen as natural, and his work as a spy during World War II! Gonçalo builds his biographical narrative as a storyteller worthy of Old Man Mozz, presenting us with a man with dreams, passions, and, of course, his contradictions. We see, for example, how Falk was passionate about magicians, a great influence on the creation of Mandrake, and about the world of theater, something present in the dramatic way in which the Phantom often acts. It is a truly impressive book, for which I am happy to have collaborated as a reviewer, and I hope that readers from other countries besides my own will have the opportunity to read this wonderful work. During 2013 and 2015, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary held an Animals With Attitude Koala Sculpture Trail on the Gold Coast, Australia . "The Koala Who Walked" (AKA The Phantom) kept a watchful eye on things at the entrance to Victoria Park, Victoria Avenue, Broadbeach until mid May 2015. These koalas are made out of fiberglass and was painted by a local high school teacher at Keebra Park called Scott Maxwell.  These painted designs included Blinky Bill, Mario, Ninja Turtle, Santa Claus and many other koala's painted with local and Australian themed designs. After May 2015, 20 of these koalas including our Phantom went up for auction to raise money for Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and was purchased by a local company called Prestige Service Training and was housed outside their Southport Central Building until early 2024. After nine years and many phans photos later, it is time for the koala to be enjoyed by others. Prestige Service Training  has recently listed the koala on sale through Facebook Marketplace for $1,000AU. At the time of writing, we believe the koala has already been sold and has other phans lining up to be considered in case the sale falls through. Many phans have made a pilgrimage to this site over the past nine years. If you have made this pilgrimage and have a photo to share, please email it to us  so we can add it to this article. At the recent August 2024 AnchorCon in Clayton, New York , the Award winning international cosplayer Knightmage dressed up as the Phantom on the Sunday. For those who have come in late Knightmage has a huge international following with his award winning cosplays. In his day job, he is a Deputy Sheriff for the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio . His website credits him with over 370 costumes since 2012 when he first cosplayed. During May 2024 there were a few comic conventions being held in Norway and Sweden. Thanks to phan Kristian Hellesund who has helped us with the recordings from the events we can now present them to you. It is a great opportunity to hear from some creators from around the world. During this podcast we will hear from a panel discussion between Arild Wærness , Cormac Hughes , Knut Robert Knutsen and Kristian Hellesund. They will talk about their Phantom contributions including the Lightning Strikes comics. The other Phantom artist we hear from are Mike Collins as he talks about about his history with the character, who he would like to see drawing the Phantom, his favourite stories, comparing him to other comic heroes and how to write stories from an African perspective. As you would expect, a lot of the panels and discussions were held in the native spoken language which while are not included in the podcast video / audio we have included here. This past week Spanish comic artist Jose María Ortiz Tafalla passed age 92. José María Ortiz Tafalla  was born in Barcelona, Spain  in 1932 and his comic career began in the 1950's. Apart from drawing almost 40 stories for the German Bastei  publisher with writer Peter Mennigen  he also has worked on other titles like Masters of the Universe , Roy Clark , Tenax , Disney , Cuatro Capitanes  and Jarko el Temible  just to name a few. Unfortunately, it feels like majority of Phantom phans from around the world didn't know much of him until recently when Wick Publications remastered and reprinted his stories in their current German Phantom publication. You can watch our reviews of the comics here . Thankfully due to the hard work of Ulrich Wick, phans from around the world who would never have read a Bastei German comic now get to sample his work which stands up in todays industry. These stories were originally released in the 1970's and early 1980's. These remastered comics have since also been published in the Fantomen magazine and rumours have it that they may soon also be published in a Frew comic as well. A USA based pop culture online store called Yesterdays.com has released a Phantom pin including a glitter variant. At the time of writing, they are listed as sold out on their website for $10US each. Unsure if they will be re-stocked, for those who must hunt these down, our suggestion is try eBay. From what we understand these are not licensed hence why they are called and labelled as The Walking Ghost which is a play on the Ghost Who Walks.
