At SIS2025 , Stockholm International Seriefestival 2025 there where a must attend event for all friends of the Phantom. A panel with Ulf Granberg (Editor of Fantomen 1973-2012), Jacob Habinc (Fantomen Project manager since 2021), Robert Aman (Comic researcher and author of När Fantomen blev svensk ) and Jonas Darnell (maker of Herman Hedning and J ames Hund , comics that have run in Fantomen ) was there to celebrate the 75th year of Fantomen. The Panel started with a reading of a poem dedicated to the Phantom written by Per Thörn which was featured in Roberts book  När Fantomen blev svensk , a truly wild experience. Attached is a short video of the start of the poem being read out by Per Thörn . Then all the panelist spoke about how they started to read Fantomen and how Fantomen have evolved over the years. The slotted hour for this panel felt like minutes and was over way to soon. The Scandinavian Chapter was at SIS as always, maning their Booth where the sold their books Från lila Vålnad and Lee Falk berättaren , ran a quiz and informed about the club, their events and PhantomWiki . Between 1950 and 1952 Frew released a collected works of several titles in a monthly magazine called Super Yank Comics that featured Catman and The Phantom. These magazines are now highly sort after by Australian comic collectors with many selling for $200+ in the market today. For those who cannot afford these comics, Frew is releasing a new Legacy Series reprinting these old comics. Buy now for $125 inc postage for the two volumes within Australia Each comic was originally 24 pages with roughly 7-13 pages containing Phantom stories. It is worth noting that the Phantom is not the main character in this series but did appear in all issues except 1 and 6. Issue 7 was not printed - very much like the issue 330 in the regular Frew Phantom series. The stories included in the stories are: Sunday 17: " The 12 Tasks ". Printed in issues 18-19 Each volume will hold 9x comics each with beautiful covers by Chris Wahl and Glenn Lumsden . These will be available for purchase at Frew 's Supanova booth in Sydney on 21-22 June 2025 and or their website (link to come soon). The prices are $55AU each +postage. For many common Australian fans, they will never add these comics to their collection and these collected works are a great way for us to get a feeling of the 1950 comics. Back in 2019, Frew released a similar series for their 1955 Phantom Adventures prose books which can still be purchased from their website ($33AU inc postage to Australia & $20AU +postage for outside of Australia orders. During the 2024 Uppsala Comix Convention   Fantomen editor Andreas Eriksson  announced the 2024 and 2025 Fantomen Softcover Album  themes for 2024 and 2025. A lot of phans were excited about the theme being about the beloved Prince Rex character. Rex was first adopted by the Phantom in 1966 and in 1982 he found out to be a prince to the mountain kingdom Baronkhan. The stories in this volume like the first volume will be featuring all newspaper stories except one. This comic features an amazing cover by Luca Erbetta . The book will contain 128 pages. Frew is celebrating their number 2000 comic at Supanova Sydney plus will have loads of goodies for all the phans to buy. Every year Phantom phans from around the world come to Sydney, Australia to enjoy a weekend full of purple and phellow Phantom phans. 2025 will be a great weekend with lots of Phantom related guests and things to do. Unfortunately, the team at Chronicle Chamber wont be attending this year but we know every phan that attends will have a great time and we have done our best to highlight every Phantom related event / guest in this article. We will try and provide a detailed review of the weekend in the form of a podcast - if you want to be our roving reporter for the weekend, please contact us. Comic creator Peter David has sadly passed away on 24 May 2025, after a long battle with sickness. While this is a Phantom fan page, his notable comic book work includes a wide range of comic ttiles for both DC and Marvel including The Incredible Hulk , as well as runs on Aquaman , Young Justice , SpyBoy , Supergirl , Fallen Angel , Spider-Man , Spider-Man 2099 , Captain Marvel , and X-Factor . His Phantom work includes the popular DC mini series with artwork by Joel Orlando in 1988 ( a review of the series by Paul Jonassen ) and the first Hermes mini series with artwork by Sal Velluto . Both series have been widely translated and reprinted by various publishers including Fantomet (Norway), Zauberstern (German), Hermes (USA) and Brazil. I never had he opportunity to communicate with him but everyone I have talked to who did commented on how much he knew about the Phantom and his love and respect for the character. Frankly, this showed in his stories. He was one of the few USA based creators who actually understood who he was. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family that he has left behind. Our thanks to his legacy he has left on the wider comics community and we are glad he had the opportunity to leave an imprint on our character, The Phantom. Access to all Friends of the Phantom newsletters and much more can be found at our Phantom Preservation Project .] Wilson McCoy worked feverishly to get ahead so that he could travel, gathering vital information and experiences to enrich his approach. On one trip abroad with the Chicago Press club , he went on safari to Africa to visit the real “poison pygmies” of the Ituri forest, who lived near the seven-foot tall Watusi tribe. In Lee Falk ’s detailed story, the Phantom lives with such a tribe, which he rescued from domination by Wasaka giants. In real life, Wilson McCoy went on a fact-finding mission and found himself face to face with the fearsome tribe. After a long drive, the small car that carried him stopped at a narrow dirt road where he was confronted by a scene that Lee Falk could have written. Suddenly, the pygmies appeared, emerging from the forest from all directions. They escorted him, six in front, six behind, down a centuries-old path to their village, where they initiated an exchange of goods. At one point, a conflict caused the warriors to threaten Wilson McCoy and his party with their poison arrows. The problem turned out to be caused by outsiders from a nearby village who angered the Ituri by competing in the barter. Once this was understood, the transactions were kept separate solving the tension. Wilson McCoy , eventually befriended by the Ituri, played drums while they danced, communicating with the natives much like the fictional Phantom through jungle drums—an amazing case of life following fiction. Wilson McCoy expressed his respect and appreciation for the peoples he met while in the Belgian Congo and Uganda. He spoke about his discourse with the intelligent and pleasant King of the Bunyoro province who discussed jazz grea t Louis Armstrong . At one point, Wilson McCoy found himself pursued by a charging rhino, then later was confronted by belligerent elephants. At another, he was jailed in Cairo under suspicion of being a spy while gathering information from photographs and sketches to enrich his rendering of the strip. He was released and allowed to continue taking pictures. In Lee Falk ’s stories, McCoy illustrated scenes where thieves ransacked property of travelers. In real life, McCoy found his hotel room broken into and his luggage and travelers checks stolen. In another case of irony, while visiting the pyramids, he encountered a couple of camel riders who happened to be fellow Barringtonians (the town from which Wilson McCoy hailed) with whom he enjoyed a brief visit comparing travel experiences. With the exception of an isolated incident with hostile East Germans on a trip financed by Russia during the heat of the cold war, he found his encounters with all of the people pleasant and enjoyable. The bows and arrows that he brought back as souvenirs not only were used for authentic illustrations in the comic pages, but served as educational visual materials when he visited US classrooms to share his experiences with school children. Some of the Phantom adventures which Wilson McCoy illustrated dealt with the Far East. For another trip, Wilson McCoy was part of a dozen artists from the National Cartoonists Society , who traveled to the Orient to provide entertainment for US troops stationed in Japan and Korea. Part of this morale-building tour including visiting GI hospitals. Again his real-life experiences provided an adventure worthy of a comic strip when the plane developed engine trouble 1,000 miles out. After a second start, they traversed the sea from Hawaii to northern Japan to Korea, where they found themselves in the midst of a frightening protest directed against Czechoslovakians and Poles. While in the demilitarization zone, he entertained audiences in which every member was armed with a rifle. He joked about how “some entertainers worry about having tomatoes tossed at them.” On a trip to Scandinavia, Wilson McCoy learned about the importance of the Phantom there during the German occupation. The Nazis had taken over the Afton Poston newspaper, using it as a tool of propaganda, but in an attempt to keep continuity in appearance, allowed the Phantom strip to remain. They never realized that the stories contradicted the other content. While the Germans claimed that the US was being bombed off the map, through the Phantom strip, the Norwegians knew otherwise. Under Wilson McCoy , the Phantom enjoyed a distribution to 500 newspapers and he credited his travels with making his illustrations stronger. His approach to rendering architecture as well as portraits was strongly influenced by what he saw. His surprising death in 1961 came as a result of an illness brought about from his travels to the jungle. With the exception of being nearly killed in an automobile accident, he enjoyed excellent health for most of his adult life and was an example of vitality and commitment. His involvement in the National Cartoonists Society , support of the US military, and contribution to the schools and community were hallmarks of his existence, as much as bringing joy to the millions of Phantom fans who appreciate his work on the vintage Phantom strips which still continue to be reprinted today. This past Hermes Press has released a notification on their socials, mailing list and other platforms regarding the latest with their main and only distributor Diamond Comics . Apparently Diamond Comics are currently going through bankruptcy and letting staff go which is a worry for many smaller publishers like Hermes. According to Hermes Press , Diamond Comics is the only company that distributes their books to third party companies like local comic shops, Amazon etc. While comic book shops can order directly through Hermes Press , that does take extra time and I wonder just how many will end up doing that? This is the same problem that many Australian comic book shops find when trying to purchase Frew comics and why many have decided not to sell their comics anymore. Unless something changes, the only solution is to buy your Hermes Press Phantom and or Mandrake books through their own website. The biggest problem with this current situation is that shipping from the USA to non US countries is expensive where buying from a local comic shop and or Amazon diminishes the shipping cost greatly. I have majority of the books and comics from Hermes Press in my collection but unless my local comic shop can still order them I will have to stop buying. We would love to hear from other fans around the world who add these to their collections and what this distribution concern means to them?

Mad Cave Studios Flash Gordon Quarterly #2 was originally published 18 December 2024 and is included on our Chronicle Chamber Phantom fan platform because it includes a crossover story into the Defenders of the Earth multiverse. It is time for some good news. Back in 2020 and 2022 we saw newspaper companies in Australia and USA dropping the Phantom strip in their newspapers. Several fans and even creators have since wondered on the future of the character. Thanks to eager eyed fan Marko Davidovic , we can celebrate that several newspapers in 2025 have added the strip to their newspaper in a surprising turn of events. Majority of the time it is the opposite so this is cause for celebration to see newspapers around the world adding the character to their diminishing comic sections. So far we know of 14 newspapers and interestingly they have all started with the 268th Phantom daily newspaper story " The Spark " by Tony DePaul and Mike Manley . At the time it was the current daily story, with the story starting January 27th 2025 on Comics Kingdom and other newspapers, but started on these newspapers on March 4th 2025. Perhaps this is why the story started off with a two week For Those Who Came In Late storytelling of the origin of the Phantom for potential new readers who read the newspaper. Mad Cave Studios Defenders of the Earth #5 was originally published 19 March 2025 after a two week delay. This issue features two covers with Ming the Merciless having his time to shine on the variant cover. Please note, this review will have spoilers.
