Have you got your Phantom Saturday Morning Cards in your collection yet? We are huge phans of these collector cards with a great snazzy collectors case and the art is simply outstanding. The artwork has caught our attention so much that we had to connect with the artist and learn more about him and his work. We introduce you to the artist behind the cards, Erick Marshall . Jermayn Parker: Welcome, thank you for your time. Can you start off by you telling us where are you from? Erick Marshall: I’m from Mexico City , the capital of Mexico . JP: Did you study art and or design? EM: Interestingly, I didn’t study art or design. I studied communication (focused on media, film, radio, and TV). The little or much I know about art has come from books, comics, and advice from fellow artists over the years. JP: Oh Wow! Did you read comics as a child? What was your favourite? And of course, what about the Phantom? EM: Of course! As a kid, I enjoyed looking at comic art more than reading the stories. My Dad would read them to me while I’d appreciate the art. My first favorites were “ The Death of Superman ” and “ The Return of Superman ”. I loved the parts drawn by Jon Bogdanove and Tom Grummett . My favorite character from that story was Superboy . The Phantom is now one of my favorites. The Phantom has always been famous in Latin America, and while I knew of the character, I wasn’t heavily into him. However, when Daniel (from SMC) gave me the opportunity to work on the project, l became a bit obsessed with the Phantom, which is great. I became especially obsessed with Phantom 2040 - the opening song is epic, and the story is too. I even bought a replica of the ring! It’s an honor to be part of the character’s official history and have phans recognize my art. JP: How did you get into designing trading cards? EM: I started drawing sketch cards at 15 years old thanks to Puis Calzada ( Metallic a’s current official artist), who encouraged me to create sketch cards for Upper Deck . The first set I drew for them was Spider-Man . Since then, l’ve worked on multiple sets for various companies and studios, including Perna Studios , Thwip , RRParks Cards , Brailinz , Upper Deck , Iconic Creations , and, of course Saturday Morning Cards . JP: How did you get to work for Saturday Morning Cards ? EM: Dan messaged me on Instagram DM, offering me to draw sketch cards for a Winnie the Pooh and Rocketeer set, which I accepted. Interestingly, I hadn’t been drawing many cards at that time, as I thought the sketch card business was dying out. I think Saturday Morning Cards are bringing back sketch cards and card collecting in a fresh and new way, and it’s great how they present each set, the boxes, the art and the cases. Being part of it excites me a lot. And Dan giving me the opportunity to be one of his designers is something I’ll always be grateful for. JP: What about the Phantom that appeals to you? EM: What draws me to the Phantom is, of course, his costume. I’ve always liked characters who wear masks. The way artists draw the Phantom is visually appealing, and I love his story. The rings he wears are awesome. I think Billy Zane was born to play the character! I still can’t believe the Phantom was the first to have a futuristic version (Phantom 2040). JP: Can you tell us about your process for the phantom designs? EM: Dan was looking for an artist who could emulate the 1990’s drawing style, so I mustered up the courage and sent him a message. I wasn’t sure what he needed an artist for, but when he told me it was about the Phantom, my mind exploded - I couldn’t believe it. I had to study artists like Jim Lee , Mike Manley , and of course, the classic Phantom artists. I think the ring card and the portrait card are a 100% my vision of the character. If you notice, the mask is drawn slightly differently than how it’s presented in the comics. You can see a lot of influence from characters like Robin in the way I draw the mask, with two large white triangles. I think that’s my main contribution to my version of the Phantom, and I’d love to take it to comics. I’d love to be the artist on one of his official books now. I hope I can do it someday, because designing the box, cases, and cards was amazing and fun. JP: We know you drew the main cards but did you draw any sketch cards for the Phantom set? EM: Of course, I made 9 color pieces and one pencil sketch hoping it would be a 1/1 variant. JP: Thank you for your time, finally do you accept commissions from phans out there? EM: Yeah! The Swedish Fantomen  Christmas Album is the longest ongoing Phantom comic series in the world beating the Swedish regular series and the Frew  comic with their first Christmas Album coming out in 1944. On the Jultidnings Forlaget  website the 2025 Christmas Album is available for future orders. They have listed the book at 89 sek  ($15Au & $10US/EU). The album will be available to buy at shops and other website providers from November. The cover for this Christmas cover is drawn by Henrik Salhstrom . Wick Comics started producing their regular Phantom stories back in 2022. These comics have been very popular among phans and with their low number printing, they are fast becoming highly collectible. Issue 8 was released in May 2024, but due to some circumstances no other issues have been released since. We now have an update on the final four issues. Thanks to Ulrich Wick , he was able to confirm that issues 9 and 10 will be out in November to coincide with a local comic convention in Germany. Issues 11 and 12 at this stage will be out in February or March 2026 (subject to possible future delays). It is worth noting that issue 12 will be in full colour. For those who have been eagerly awaiting for the latest Moonstone The Phantom series by Mike Bullock and Sergio Ibáñez , we have an update. The first part of this new storyline was set to debut as a backup to Steven Grant ' s Bystander #1 , which was originally scheduled to release sometime in May or June 2025. As posted on The Phantom subreddit , there has been a delay with no updated release date. As posted in a screenshot with the publisher, Moonstone is currently working out issues with their distribution channel. The publisher plans to release the series once distribution has been ironed out. Exciting New Phantom Art from Sergio Ibáñez Five pages featured in Bystander #1 . Courtesy of Artist Sergio Ibáñez Bystander series artist Ibáñez posted some fantastic new images from the series on Facebook. Check out The Ghost Who Walks in action. There are five new images in all, all from the forthcoming Bystander #1 . Scroll through the gallery below. When asked about his work on the series, Ibáñez said, " Honestly, it's a great pleasure for me to draw The Phantom. Since I was a child, I've read his stories in magazines and newspapers in Argentina, my country. I think he's an iconic comic book character. One of those characters who will never die ." At the (American) National Cartoonists Society ’s 79th Reuben Awards , comic arts legend Sy Barry  received the Elzie Segar Award . This event was held on August 15, 2025, in Boston. The Reuben Awards  are held every year, during the NCS  Annual Conference. The Society honors the year’s outstanding achievements in all walks of the profession.

Christian Moller reviews magazines #87, #87, #89 and #90. For those who may be confused, the numbering refers not to the issue number but the Daily story number. Please note, issues #87 and #88 was originally released in November 2024 and issues #88 and #89 released in December 2024. We failed to review these on the platform and am catching up now. The covers are again designed by Andy . There has been some discussion online about if they are AI generated art or not. We will leave that discussion and opinion for the readers to decide on. In this video I give you examples of how the publisher ECR had collected these stories back in the day and the process of restoring them for these comic books. It is very fascinating. October 1950 saw the first Fantomen comic from Sweden released; 2025 sees the magazine celebrating its 75th anniversary. We talked to editors Jacob Habinc and Andreas Eriksson about the anniversary in our last podcast with them . The anniversary comic is out for sale in shops on 20 August 2025, and what a way to celebrate with a bumper comic featuring 124 pages, including a new story of the Phantom visiting Sweden. The cover for this striking cover is by Henrik Sahlström and features the Poseidon statue in Gothenburg . The contents for the magazine are: " Kalla fiskar, heta stålar " (" Cold Fish, Hot Cash ") by Pidde Andersson and Janusz Ordon " Djungelsnö " (" Jungle Snow ") by Claes Reimerthi , Felmang , Benny and Ferri , after an idea by Cici Rüetschi and Jörgen Bäckström . While Diana attends a UN meeting, the Phantom tries to enjoy some downtime by eating at famous Gothenburg restaurants and seeing the sights. However, as always, the Phantom finds trouble and ends up battling bad guys who use seafood (which Gothenburg is also famous for) as a means to smuggle steriods. Some of the famous sights the Phantom visits while in Gothenburg are Hisingen , and he also passes Haga Nygata , Park Lane and the Kometen restaurant. Have we missed any? Let us know. " Om Fantomen var från Göteborg " (" If the Phantom was from Gothenburg ") by Johan Wanloo  is on the back cover and is a humorous take on Gothenburg  and the Phantom. I have been told that Gothenburg is known for the residents' humor based around puns, so much so that a Swedish nickname for puns is a " Gothenburg joke ". So this story by Johan is naturally full of puns and features local Gothenburg references. If it were to be translated to another language, the jokes would likely be lost in translation. The Parasite  has not yet been published by Frew but was first published by Fantomen in 1974. The Parasite  is in black and white, with all the other stories are printed in colour. Jungle Snow  and The Last Viking are in the original colours and not recoloured. " Jungle Snow " was first created specifically for the 75th anniversary of Kemikontoret ( Association of Swedish Chemical Industries ) in 1992 which saw the comic first printed in a standalone separate comic for the celebration. The idea and plot were written by Cici Rüetschi and Jörgen Bäckström of Kemikontoret , and the script was then written by Claes Reimerthi . This story features famous people featured in the story - a gold star to anyone who spots and identifies them all. In this 75th anniversary comic, it includes hints and clues on every page about who they are. If anyone can identify them all, please let us know so we can share the list. The annual Gothenburg Book Fair in 2025 is held from Thursday, 25th to Sunday, 28 September 2025, which will see this comic still in many shops, which will tie in beautifully and may see the comic get media attention. This comic has already received some positive media attention with an article in the Gothenburg   Post newspaper . Hopefully, the comic and celebration will see some more attention to celebrate the huge milestone. Out today is Fantomen 18-19/2025 which features a preview of the next Fantomen comic, which will be a special issue for Australian readers - The Phantom is coming down under! In issue 20/2025 we will see the 21st Phantom visit Perth. In issue 21/2025 we will also see the 18th Phantom visit Perth, set in 1896. The story will be written by Swedish writer John Rassy (which is a pseudonym), who has only written a few Phantom stories but have all been well received. The two-part story will be drawn by Percy Ochoa who was an assistant for Cesar Spadari and has drawn several Phantom stories for both Frew and Team Fantomen including the well-received Belle Époque saga. Details of the plot are tightly held at the moment, but the two stories are related. I (Jermayn Parker) live in Perth and love the place, but I am admittedly slightly confused on why we would see the Phantom visit the most isolated city in the world. Because of this, I had to communicate with John Rassy on how and why we will see the Phantom visit Perth, Western Australia. When I ( John Rassy ) first came up with the basic idea for what was to become " A Dark Matter " and " Time Takes a Tumble", I had two separate but intertwined adventures in mind, set in different ages and involving the current Phantom and one of his forefathers, which eventually led me to the times of the Phantom #18. They both visit Perth, for different reasons obviously, and at a certain moment during their respective escapades, both experience something extraordinary, which none of them really can get to grips with. It’s either: A – Easily explained. B – Definitely NOT easily explained. It sure gives both of them food for thought and makes them think twice about what to put on paper in their chronicles when they’re back in the Skull Cave. As for the story plot of the first episode, the 21st Phantom accompanies Diana to Perth for a U.N. conference on green energy, but he’s also eager to meet up with an old friend of his from his Harrison University studying days, who now runs a stud farm in Perth. This guy happens to live with a scientist whom Diana has previously met and worked together with for the U.N, and they have been invited to stay at their house during the conference. They soon learn that green energy is highly controversial and definitely not appreciated in some quarters. Oh, let’s not forget; there are also some weird things going on along the way. The second episode is set in 1896 as the 18th Phantom arrives in Mawitaan from Britain on a cargo ship along with his friend Adam Pennington. Adam is a newly established entrepreneur in the farming equipment industry, and the ship is on its way to Perth, where he expects to do some good business in Western Australia. When the 18th Phantom hears rumours of businessmen disappearing shortly after their arrival, he decides to accompany his friend on the next leg of the trip, to Perth. They are soon right in the thick of it as a merciless league strikes against Adam with an extremely refined and fiendish method to get what they want. For the mysterious boss of this league, there’s more than money at stake, though; it’s about the future of Western Australia! During his race against time, the 18th Phantom also experiences some really weird stuff. What made me choose to set the stories in Australia, and specifically Perth? Well, whenever I watch a movie or a documentary, read a book, a magazine, or a newspaper, or whatever I experience in life, I sometimes ask myself, "Is it possible to put the Phantom into a situation similar to this one? What could it lead to, and how would I realistically get him there in the first place without resorting to any kind of more or less ridiculous emergency solution?" That’s where it usually starts, and the ideas just keep popping up. In this case I came across some fantastic pictures of the famous black swans in Perth, and that was it! The Phantom has to visit this beautiful area! The fact that Perth is such a remote place also added some extra spice; there’s no other place like Perth! In the 19th century it must have been something like the outpost, the final frontier, or whatever, and it’s such a beautiful city set in fantastic surroundings! While I’ve never been to Australia myself, what I know about this fantastic country is based on news, documentaries, what I’ve read, or what I’ve heard from others who’ve been there. I love the wildlife, which is so extraordinary in its variety; I love the Australian people, their accent, and their kind of laid-back approach to life (in a positive way). With that said, I’m not really in a position to proudly announce that yes, these episodes really look and feel like Australia. To be honest, it’s difficult enough to get a decent plot together in 22 pages, and that means one often has to sacrifice some bits here and there, which could have given it a bit more, how should I say, local atmosphere. I really hope that none of you beautiful Australians will find these episodes a really dreadful take on your country or feel offended in any way! As for the background research, I can’t give too much away without revealing one of the backbone pillars for the 19th-century plot, but I found some really interesting reading about the foundation of the Australian federation and how it wasn’t plain sailing when it came about. Some wanted a federation; some wanted to go it alone. For the modern-day episode featuring our Phantom, I tried to find as much information and pictures of Perth and its surroundings as possible, i.e., infrastructure, where the local trains run, etcetera. I hope you’ll find my answers more than adequate, and I hope you don’t mind me taking this opportunity to wish all the best to all followers of the amazing Phantom and the just as amazing Chronicle Chamber! The artist who gets the privlege to draw the Phantom in Australia is Percy Ochoa , who first drew some Australian animals for the Chronicle Chamber bushfire phundraiser. Where he asked if he had to do his own research on how to draw the Australian landscape and the animalsas they would be a lot different than what he would usually draw in Phantom stories. He had this to say. John Rassy provided me with essential material for the first episode, especially for the equipment in the story. Obviously, I also have to conduct my own research with additional documentation to enrich the pages graphically. In the second episode, the story basically takes place in Perth, Australia, in 1896, almost like the American Old West, with horses used as a means of transportation, which gave me the opportunity to draw them, as they are my specialty. The scripts are the same as those written by any screenwriter from any country. The exchange of opinions between the screenwriter and the illustrator is necessary so that the finished product meets the screenwriter's expectations. The illustrator not only interprets them but also adds details and enriches them graphically as much as possible for the benefit of the reader. Obviously I am excited! What about yourself? Do you like to see the Phantom down under?

Mad Cave Studios teased a return of the comic series in the last panel of issue #8 which saw the Defenders of the Earth save us from Kro-tan and his plan against humankind. Thanks to information from Mad Cave Studios, we can share that the new comic series will be released in December 2025. At this time the plot and creator team are unknown, but the title of the series will be " Dark Destiny ". In a podcast interview with World at War Comics , Dan DiDio  did say at the 28-minute mark that he had already written a second storyline outline back in April 2024. We have a bunch of questions after issue #8 and we are wondering if we will see any of them answered in the new series or if we will just get a new set of questions. Some questions the team would like to see explored are: Is Ming really dead? Who was the ice robot/slave who killed Kro-tan? Is Dale really alive? What happened with Princess Castra? Will Kurt return? Will we see the Phantom's wife/Jedda's mum? Will Jedda now be the full-time Phantom? Considering that Barin Atomics was used in the first series, will we see Prince Barin? Editions Dante , the French publisher who are currently releasing Phantom comics, first teased back in April 2024 that they were looking into creating their own licensed Phantom stories . Thanks to confirmation from creator and editor Antonio D'Agostino ( Tony Dagos ), we can inform you that these stories will be out in 2026. What will excite the fans from around the world is that these comics will be released in English along with French. The singular issues will be released first, and then a trade paperback collecting all the parts. Again, the TPB will be released in English and French. The story is written and illustrated by Antonio D'Agostino  ( Tony Dagos ) and coloured by Sergio Pugliese . No information at this stage on the specific release dates and or the prices but we will update you when we know more. The plot is intriguing. Strange disappearances in different parts of Bangalla. The Phantom, is warned by his friend Fidel, and the Phantom sets out to find out what is happening in the jungle. After several days, he comes across something that is not human... or is it? Find out in the first issue. We where lucky enough to spend some time chatting with Antonio D'Agostino when this news came out and he agreed to answer some questions about himself which we have included below. Jermayn Parker: Can you tell us about yourself? Antonio D'Agostino: I was born in France in 1959, in Besançon in the Doubs region. I am a self-taught artist. In 1970, a publishing house known today for its Marvel comics, Dr Strange, Marvel , and Fantask , which featured characters such as the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Iron Man , and the X-Men , The artist for Silver Surfer at that time was John Buscema , and he inspired me as an artist. I started drawing characters of mine and my oldest brother's own invention. Then later, I discovered the master, Neal Adams . JP: What is your role at Dante Editions ? AD: I am the creator of Dante Editions and an artist. JP: Why The Phantom? Did you read about the character growing up? AD: I was very young in 1969 (9 years old) and my brother was already working and was passionate about comic books. The first comic book in 1969 was The Phantom, long before Dr Strange and co. I read The Phantom over his shoulder, and I was immediately fascinated by the character. I started copying the character. JP: What is special about The Phantom for you? AD: It's that strange, mysterious side. But especially for a kid who read the adventures of a white hero dressed strangely with his mask and his beautiful white horse, hunting down bandits in the jungle. That's it! The Phantom was very different from the Marvel and DC characters. JP: How can we follow your work? Christian Moller  reviews the fourth issue from the newest magazine series from Zauberstern . The magazine was first released in shops on 22 July, 2025. This is the first time that these stories have been published in Germany - for many readers it is the first time they have read these stories. The stories we review in this video are: " Das Geheimnis der Wikingerfestung " (" The Viking Fortress Mystery ") by Tony DePaul and Graham Nolan " Die eiserne Python " (" The Iron Python ") by Tony DePaul and Graham Nolan " Die Prinz Rex-Verschwörung, Teil 1 " (" The Prince Rex Conspiracy ") by Tony DePaul and Graham Nolan You can order your copy of this from the Zauberstern  website . They also sell their comics from shops throughout Germany. This issue only costs 7.99 Euro, is full colour and this issue is 64 pages. This cover is by phan favourite Ertuğrul Edirne  and was repurposed, with the original appearing on the Turkish Kızılmaske #2  comic published by Büyülü Çizgi Roman . The original cover featured a red Phantom and this has been edited to feature a purple Phantom. Spezial #5  will be out in September 2025. The print quality is great with thick glossy paper and the colours are very bright as per normal. This magazine does these stories justice. November 2018 saw the cancellation of the regular Fantomet magazine . In exciting news, the Fantomet Facebook page has announced that the comic series is back . The first comic will come out in September 2025. The news has excited many local Norwegian readers but has also been widely praised around the wider Phantom community. The series will be a monthly release and will be 100 pages per issue. The contents will be very similar to the Swedish Fantomen series, featuring a mixture of old classic and new stories. Interestingly, this series will feature just Phantom stories, unlike the Swedish Fantomen  series, which features other comic stories. This issue will feature four Phantom stories. Two never before published in Norway and two classics. The beauty of the two classic stories is that these will be presented in full colour for the first time to Fantomet readers. " The Coast of Chains " by Daniel Carlsson & Anthony Spay (published by Fantomen in 2022) " Death in Carpatia " by Mikael Sol & Janusz Ordon (published by Fantomen  in 2019) " Revenge of the Drummer " by Norman Worker & Knut Westad (last published in Norway in 2015), " The Man Who Could Not Die " by Idi Kharelli & Georges Bess  (last published in Norway in 2001), Since the cancellation of the regular comic series in 2018, there have been several attempts to keep the character alive in the country, but they were not successful. Hopefully this new series will be the answer and be ongoing. The Fantomet Kronologisk series stopped in 2023. The Fantomet Kronologisk reprinted stories previously published in Fantomet, chronologically from 1964 onwards. Another series titled Nye Fantomet historier was an album series that started in 2019 but only lasted two issues. The year album was the third series that restarted again after the initial regular comic cancellation. The yearly album initially stopped in 1987 and was again picked up in 2021 and has continued to 2024, and we assume will also be out again in 2025.

Thanks to the research powers of the guys from PhantomWiki , they have found a lost comic featuring the Phantom, Mandrake, Lothar, and others being invited to the 1982 Balerna Comic Fair. It was published as the centerfold poster in a special supplement of the Swiss newspaper Corriere del Ticino for the 4th Balerna Comic Fair (dated 15th October to the 23rd in 1982). This comic was titled “ L’Appuntamento ” ( The Appointment ). It was drawn by Italian artist Franco Bignotti and is a humorous crossover story in which various Italian-created characters such as Mister No , Tex Willer , Zagor and Martin Mystère appear, but also other American-created heroes such as the Phantom, Mickey Mouse , Prince Valiant , Pluto and others. They all receive a mysterious call and head towards an unknown destination, which is eventually revealed to be the Balerna Comic Fair . If you find other odd Phantom-related advertisements or media, please let us know, as we love digging through the archives of history. We have a Phantom preservation project where all the content is out of print/production and is not accessible through any current store (not including eBay or other collectable / second hand-type stores). This includes things such as old Phantom Phan Club newsletters, newspaper articles, videos and music that were released decades ago, and much more. There is a lot of Phantom stuff out there, so this is an ever-growing resource!
