The Swedish Comic Con will be held November 1-3 in Stockholm and will feature Kasia Nie as one of the guests who will be in attendance. At the time of writing she has drawn one Phantom cover and one story for Egmont for Fantomen 12/2024 . Fantomen  artist Karl Johnsson  will be present at a booth for a publisher and Andreas Eriksson will also have a booth. Karl Johnsson has drawn several World of the Phantom stories and Andreas Eriksson  has written stories for Team Fantomen , Frew and Lightning Strike . Great news following the announcement back in May 2024 the 2024 Fantomet (Norway) album will be out 8th November 2024. Cover art is Sam Klein who has beautifully captured the elements of the recent Wreck and Ruin storyline in the album cover. The format has been in landscape format and 62 pages which is what we have been told, a standard Norwegian format. The exciting news is that this years the editors and Egmont are trying something new. The 2024 annual will be a mammoth 150 pages in size in a A4 portrait format with four daily strips per pages and a tabloid format for the Sunday stories. The stories are a mixture of new Daily newspaper adventures and two classic newspaper stories. It is important to note that all these stories have not previously been published in a comic in Norway before. Christian Moller reviews the latest issue from Zauberstern #14 which features the following stories which was first published by Charlton and DC comics : " Das Phantom von Shang-Ri-La " (" The Phantom of Shang-Ri-La ") by Dick Wood and Jim Aparo " Der Pharao des Todes " (" The Pharaoh Phantom ") by Dick Wood and Jim Aparo " Im Netz der Angst " (" The Web of Fear ") by Joe Gill and Frank Bolle " Gold " (" Gold ") by Mark Verheiden and Luke McDonnell This comic is of great value with 100 page of comics in full colour on great quality paper for 10€. This magazine see's Zauberstern re-using a past cover instead of creating their own new covers which they have done previously. Do you prefer the publisher creating their own unique covers? This cover was created by Jim Aparo and was original used as the cover #31 for Charlton Comics back in 1969. It is worth noting that the magazine is glued and not stapled, this is a new decision. Do you prefer staples or glue for your comic spines? The main issue for this comic, is that several pages of the Charlton stories are not printed crisply. I am unsure if that is a source problem, a scanning problem or even a print problem. In the video we highlight a couple of pages were this happens. Issue #15 will be out in October 2024. Italy has a rich history with the Phantom publishing Phantom comics before countries like USA, Australia and Sweden. On top of this they have a rich history of quality creators producing many stories that have left an ever lasting impact on Phantom phans from around the world. Italian publisher Editoriale Cosmo will be producing a new mini series to celebrate these Italian creators and their Phantom legacy. No word yet on how many issues will be published but we can confirm they will be including stories created by Angelo Todaro and perhaps other Italian Phantom creators like Felmang . We believe that the stories will be reprints that first appeared in the Frew and Egmont comics. These comics will be 192 pages and printed in black and white and sold for 8,90€ ($15Au, $10US, 100 sek/nok and 850 INR). You can pre order your copy here from the Editoriale Cosmo website It is worth pointing out that at this stage there is no publication date and some pre order information found online and in preview magazines may be wrong. Below is one example which states that Felmang 's stories will be presented but a social post by Editoriale Cosmo hints that at least the first comic will feature stories created by Angelo Todaro . Either way it is good to see new Phantom comics published again in Italy. On top of this new series is the recent Sy Barry Daily story reprint series which started in April 2024 - read about that release here . The 13th issue of Shakti Comics Phantom came out in August 2024. This is also the first issue with no Hindi and Bengali comic with Shakti deciding not to print those language comics anymore. The comic contains one Daily story: " The Llongo Forest " by Tony DePaul and Mike Manley The cover artist is Ranjan Dutta  who has now done two Phantom covers for both Shakti  and Regal Publishers . It also includes a poster with that was originally sold at previous conventions. Do you like that is a different design to the cover of the comic? This comic does not feature a 'content advisory' note like Frew 's and Regal Publisher comics. This comic was originally scheduled to be published in May 2024. While I received my copy in June, some received their orders much later. Are you happy that Shakti are not printing their comic in Hindi and Bengali anymore? Presenting the review of the 2024 Fantomen softcover book featuring stories of the fan favourite Rex King aka the Prince of Baronkhan. This year's theme is called " Djungelpojken Rex ", which is translated to "Rex, the Jungle Boy". The book is 128 pages, in black and white with a spectacular cover by Luca Erbetta . The book was released in September 2024. This book contains four stories: " Djungelpojken " (" Rex King ") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry " Arvingen " (" Rex, the Missing Heir ") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry " Farofylld semester " (" Dangerous Vacation ") by Ulf Granberg and Jaime Vallvé " Rex hemlighet " (" Tale of Rex ") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry The book will also be printed for the Finland market in the Finish language. Fantomen 21/2024 was originally published 2 October 2024. This issue features just one Phantom story in this comic. The story is: " Mördaren och vålnaden, del 2 " (" The Killer and the Ghost Part 2 ") by Pidde Andersson and Alex Saviuk The cover artist is Henrik Sahlström with his typical high standard digital painted style. This story is the second part of the story created by Pidde Andersson with the first part printed in Fantomen 20/2024 (our review). Pidde Andersson 's previous Phantom stories were created for the Frew Australian magazine. Fantomen 21/2024  also features the story " La Jeunesse de Thorgal " by Yann and Roman Surzhenko . A hardcover album with the Phantom is out in Denmark right now. You can purchase from their website here. Denmark has a long tradition with Phantom publication. Similar to Norway, comics with The Ghost Who Walks could be read for many decades in the comics anthology “ Skippern ”, Denmark's title was called “ Skipper Skræk ”. The Danes have also seen several albums and digest size books with the Phantom. In addition, the " Fantom-hefte " comic booklet was co-printed among others in Norway and Denmark. From 1971 Denmark had its own Fantomet magazine . After some changes to the concept, the Fantomet comic book was finally closed down in 1999 after 350+ comics. 2024 will make it 25 years since Denmark had a Phantom publication when the publisher E-voke released their first hardcover publication " Fantomet: Legenden vender tilbage ". The publisher has faith in the comic series, because on the back cover we can see the images of two upcoming albums in the series. [Editors note: You can find out more about issue 2 and 3 here ] The first Danish album is a reissue of the Swedish album " Hård mot de hårda " album originally printed in 2021. It includes exactly the same stories and three articles by the Swedish Fantomen editor Andreas Eriksson translated in Danish. The contents are newspaper stories from the 1960s. Writer Lee Falk collaborating with the artists Sy Barry and Bill Lignante . The album starts with the first co-operation between Falk and Barry , " The Slave Market of Mucar ". It is an exciting story in which the Phantom unravels in a mass escape from the large Boomsby prison. In retrospect the story is a Phantom classic, where Sy Barry modernizes the style of the comic. It takes a more realistic approach than what the previous artist Wilson McCoy . The Bill Lignante drawn story is titled: " Samaris XII ”. The story has a completely different graphic expression, where Lignante goes for something best described as between Sy Barry and Wilson McCoy art styles. Lee Falk also uses fantasy elements here, and the main character is the immortal queen who cannot fall in love with anyone. The three other stories are all created by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. " The Golden Sands of Keela Wee " is a story were we get to hear the amusing tale of how Emperor Joonkar gifted the beach to one of today's Phantom's predecessors, and there is also action when some villains take over Keela Wee. " The Lions of Kukhan ", where the hunt for a lion in the jungle leads the Phantom to gladiatorial combat in the Misty Mountains. There is more fighting in the last story " The Jungle Olympics ", where some villains get a chance to do some robbing during the jungle's own Olympic Games. This album collects a nice mix of Phantom comics from a good period of newspaper comics. The stories have been published around the world several times, but some of them appear here as more complete than in some of the other publications. However, there are some objections I have with this printing. The rendition of “ The Slave Market of Mucar ” is not optimal in either the Swedish and Denmark albums released in 2021 and 2024. If we compare the print quality between these and the Fantomet Spesialalbum no. 1  from 1986 , the lines of the art are better and the details have a better contrast in the Norwegian publication . My last point is that both the Danish and Swedish editors, have chosen to reproduce several of the Phantom Sunday newspaper stories that were originally made for color in black and white. I feel it would have been an advantage if these were published in their true colourful glory. " The Fantomet: Legenden vender tilbage " is an interesting release overall. Although it has some flaws which I have highlighted above, the album is a good introduction to the new generation and re introduction to the older phan. For the Denmark and Scandinavian readers, it may be worth following E- voke in the future. The 12th issue of Shakti Comics Phantom came out in the second week of February 2024 in the three languages. Since the start of pre oders in December 2023 and it's release, the response towards the issue has been diverse  with its printing quality, presentation and colour. The comic contains one clasic Daily story: " The Presidents " by Lee Falk and Sy Barry The cover interestingly doesn't have any number mentioned to identify it as the 12th issue. The same also happened with issue #10. The cover artwork by Abhishek Biswas is very good and stands out with its use of colour. However, the printing doesn't do the cover justice as a change of paper and removal of lamination has occurred with Shakti. The use of the less thicker paper also makes the comic bend easily. The copyrights page has mention of 2022 as the copyright year. The artwork by Biswas on that page have been used since 2022, since their 4th issue. The story ' The Presidents ' is printed on a much less thicker paper compared to the one used in previous issues. The colours of the story are again done by Santosh Adsul , who seems to have become Shakti's primary colourist with him also working on other publications from them. The colours however, seems to have the same problems as before with the over use of colour on faces, backgrounds to name a few. The colour of the phantoms costumes also remain the same with the dark shaded purple used with the colours of the trunks being black and red. Some panels however, do look pleasant to the eye, but with majority of them being coloured too much, the overall result is not quite satisfactory. The video review goes in-depth into the topic of colour. The inclusion of two information pages about the various dictators that the phantom fought is a great inclusion. It surely will be a great tool for the new readers to learn more about the characters. The back cover features a synopsis of the story with its previous publications with images of the covers. However, couple of typos are seen on the page. Shaktis new issue is a mixed bag with the good being the extras like the information, images and cover. While the unpleasant being the change of paper, the colouring among other things, which are also very important for a comic book. Shakti has to be mindful of their quality and the colour, if that is improved along with the great additions there can be surely great things coming from them. The film begins with the looting of a ship, already captured and badly mauled, by the pirates. After relieving the ship and crew of valuables, the pirates fire the ship, blowing up the gunpowder on board, sinking her. While the pirates celebrate, two survivors wash up on an island, an old man and his son. Before dying, the older man gives his signet ring to his son. His son buries him, vowing vengeance. Does this sound familiar to you. Surely it is an adaption from the 1936 Phantom newspaper story created by Lee Falk and Ray Moore? However it is not, this plot is actually the start of the 1926 silent film called "The Black Pirate". I must admit I have not heard of the film before let alone the film being used as inspiration. I re looked through arguably the most definitive biography of Lee Falk, the "Lee Falk Storyteller" book and in the collective interviews ranging from 1946 to 1996, the silent film was never mentioned by Lee, the interviewers and or the others who wrote for the book. Thankfully, we can watch this film on YouTube so I got out my popcorn and watched the first 30 minutes of the film and afterwards I think the writers from Comic Book Historians and Daniel Herman are likely correct in their observations. The first time I can find anyone put these pieces together was Daniel Herman from Hermes Press. In his essay ‘Origins of the Ghost Who Walks’, in the The Phantom – the Complete Sundays: Volume 1 1939 – 1942, he mentions the film as a likely point of inspiration. “…’The Black Pirate’, likely inspired the Phantom’s oath. In that film, which is set in the first Phantom’s era, a son’s father is killed before his eyes by pirates and the young English nobleman becomes the sole survivor. He swears an oath to avenge his father’s death, which he carves onto a rock. As in the Phantom’s case, a ring is a clue to his identity.” The movie was a success so I think it is fair to say that Lee Falk and Ray Moore would have seen the movie and even if only subconsciously those elements could have been somewhat inspired by this unique storytelling. We can only deal in theories and possibilities, in no known interview by anyone featuring Lee Falk has this been discussed or confirmed.
