  • Shakti Comics: The Phantom #2 Review

Shakti Comics from India continue with their publication of the The Phantom in the three languages of English, Bengali and Hindi, with their 2nd issues out in January 2022. The new issue is a vast improvement over their debut issue - which had impeccable production quality but was riddled with a number of problems which could be considered as birthing pains. The 56 page comic is of 17 × 23 cm size - slightly smaller than their previous issue which was 17.5 x 23.3 cm. Like its predecessor it too has high quality laminated covers, thick but light glossy inside pages and is glue binded (also known as 'perfect binding' in India). Shakti set a very high standard in the production quality of their first release. Having continued with that level of production for the second issue they have added a new factor of collectibility with the inclusion of variant covers! The issue comes with 2 cover options: The standard cover, done by yours truly Ankit Mitra, is available across all three languages of English, Bengali and Hindi. The variant cover is pencilled by Indian Comic's living legend Anupam Sinha - famous for his work on Raj Comics' mainstay characters of 'Super Commando Dhruva' & 'Nagraj' - and inked and coloured by yours truly Ankit Mitra. This variant cover is exclusively available in the languages of Hindi and Bengali In addition Shakti has also given a poster of 43.5 x 29 cm featuring the standard edition cover art - made by yours truly Ankit Mitra - as a free novelty to all those who ordered the book during the preorder stage directly from their own website, or their authorised retailers. As of now the free poster is only available with the preorder stock fulfilled with the retailers, and/or by ordering the book directly from Shakti's website. The story included is 'The Phantom Lion', which is the 236th Daily Strip story written by Tony DePaul and illustrated by the late Paul Ryan. All the major presentation problems from the previous issue have been addressed by the new decision they have taken by: The Original Lettering has been kept intact. No Panels have been omitted, rearranged or 'stretched'. The book follows a 4 daily strip per page format like most publishers have done their reprints of daily strips on and is hence a lot more aesthetically pleasing to read. Their effort to maintain the production quality and take in the feedback and improve on their presentation easily makes this release highly recommended! The price for each issue is 200 Indian Rupees which is about: $3.80 Australian Dollars, $2.68 US Dollars, 2.39 Euro and 24.99 Swedish Krona. Due to licensing limitations, Shakti Comics can only sell & ship to addresses within India - so for Phans living outside India, I recommend you befriend an Indian Phan & have these books bought & shipped to you by them. If not, FREW are going to be selling some copies of this series via their website, and I'm sure these issues too will show up for order there - although in very limited quantity. Shakti has a webstore you can order from plus they are also available across various comics retailers in India. • Review of Lion - Muthu Comics Phantom Hardcover Book #2

Lion - Muthu Comics produced an excellent series of Hardcover books containing stories of characters like The Phantom, Mandrake The Magician, Rip Kirby etc last year. This year they are back with volume two of their hardcover books. This Phantom book like the previous one, is hardbound and has a cover done by Turkish artist Ertuğrul Edirne with the cover taken from the book 'Kizilmaske 7'. It is also kept in the original colours like the last cover. The first and last pages of the book features artworks by Ertuğrul Edirne, Norm Breyfogle, Eugenio Mattozzi, Antonio Lemos and of course Sy Barry with a picture of him. The book features a total number of ten Lee Falk and Sy Barry Sunday and Daily stories. Eight stories are Sundays, while two are Dailies. The stories featured in the book are as follows: "எல்லாம் கேளிக்கையே" (romanized as "Ellam Kelikkaiye"; The Lions of Kukhan") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. "விண்ணில் ஒரு எத்தர் கும்பல்" (romanized as "Vinnil Oru Eththar Kumbal"; The Super-Jet Gang") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. "காதலுக்கு உயரமில்லை" (romanized as "Kathalukku Uyaramillai"; The Little Ones") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. "கறுப்புத் தங்கக் கொள்ளை" (romanized as "Karupputh thangak kollai"; The Black Gold Pirates") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. "ஹைட்ரா படலம்" (romanized as "Haitra padalam"; The Hydra") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. "முன்னோரின் கதை" (romanized as "Munnorin kathai"; Walker's Table") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. "கடத்தல் படலம்" (romanized as "Kataththal padalam"; The Hijackers") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. "மலையில் ஒரு மர்மம்" (romanized as "Malaiyil oru marmam"; The Missing Link") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. "வெறியர் நகரம்" (romanized as "Veriyar Nagaram"; Luaga's Undercover Tour") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. "மோசடி மன்னன்" (romanized as "Mosadi Mannan"; The Mission") by Lee Falk and Sy Barry. The book is a great production as the first one. It is good for any Phantom collectors especially the Tamil readers. The book can be purchased by contacting Lion-Muthu Comics on their Facebook page or WhatsApp. I also recommend to get in touch with a Tamil Phantom fan to obtain it.

  • Fantomen 2021 Christmas Album Review

To be honest when I heard the lineup of stories they did not excite me that much, seeing it is only newspaper Dail stories. But when reading through them I think the coloring really lifts them to a new level and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. "The Swamp Dragon" by Lee Falk and Sy Barry is not one of their best, but enjoyable, I was a bit confused by the translation choice made by Ulf back in the day to alternate between monster and dragon, when the original always said dragon. The facsimile copy of the 1971 album which featured Lee Falk and Sy Barry stories "The Golden People" and "The Missing Link" is great as I said last year that we are in the years with full color albums. The extra unpublished Rolf Gohs cover and a short “in memorial” is a great addition to make it memorial. The contents are newspaper stories: "The Animal Collector" by Tony DePaul and George Olesen and Keith Williams. "The Bride of Xali" by Lee Falk and Sy Barry "The Swamp Dragon" by Lee Falk and Sy Barry You will be able to buy this album on some websites like adlibris.com and dintidning.se, it is also available at local shops along with the other Semic Christmas albums.
