The Swedish Phantom comic Fantomen have hosted votes about the best story for over 30 years, and now in their 70th year there is no exception. Like all elections it is important to vote! Even to non-Swedes this vote is important since it gives Team Fantomen and Egmont's editorial staff information about what type of stories you want to read in future issues. These days most Team Fantomen stories show up in Frew in Australia and even Brazil's Mythos Publishing are reprinting them as well. These publishers from around the world are more than likely to pick up a story that has won a Best Story award or polled well. My vote for best story for 2020 is "A Reckoning with the Nomad" which appeared in Fantomen 2-3/2020. Honourable mentions would be "Heloise Comes Home" (Fantomen 25-26/2020), "Jungle Love" (Fantomen 2-3/2020) and Stulna Ringar (Fantomen 24/2020). How to vote? The best way for non-Swedes to identify each story is is to go to the Phantomwiki page for Fantomen 2020. This page lists all the Fantomen issues, with story titles given in English if they have been published by Frew. Regal Publishers from India opened December 2020 by releasing issues #5 & #6 of their English, bi-monthly, full colour, 'The Phantom' comic series. The production quality of Issues #3 & #4 of October 2020 set the bar quite high, with a significant upgrade in paper & print quality over issues #1 & #2. I thought they had hit the proverbial ceiling for quality, but I was wrong. Issues #5 & #6 , branded as the 2020 Christmas Special, has even thicker & now, glossy 'art paper'. Similar in thickness & feel to the paper on the FREW 'The Phantom' full colour trade paperback series of books, this 90 gsm art paper gives these comics a nice heft to them & makes the pages durable with little to no chance of degrading over time. The glossy quality of the paper accentuates the detailed linework & makes all the colours really pop! Regal have to be commended for the outstanding print fidelity in reproducing these 'Sunday strips'. Every line, colour, & hue is intact, even in the most detailed of panels, with no overlap or bleed at all! Regal have also made some design changes in the inside pages. Gone are the usual red borders on each page which mentioned a header with the story name & 'Regal Comics' & the footer mentioned the page no. Along with removing the borders they have also switched to a much nicer looking font for the header and footer texts. In my opinion it enhances the presentation of each page giving it a much cooler and smarter look from its previous installments. Both issues, reprint post-Falk Sunday Strips, run 56 pages, & come with a free sticker each. The art on each sticker is from the covers of issues #1 & #2 by Vincent Moses Raja. All the stories featured have been written by Tony DePaul, drawn by the late Paul Ryan, and coloured by Tom Smith. Comics veteran Tom Smith's colours are simply outstanding and Regal does justice in reproducing and presenting them with utmost integrity. Issue #5 has cover art by Vincent Moses Raja and consist of the stories 'The Love Triangle' & 'The Lost Kingdom of Avaria'. Issue #6 has cover art by Sanjay Valecha and reprints 'The Accursed Land' & 'The Dirty Half Dozen'. Personally I prefer the story selection on Issue #6 as they are much more dramatic and modern. The price for each issue is 200 Indian Rupees which is about: $3.6 Australian Dollars, $2.7 US Dollars, 2.24 Euro & 23 Swedish Krona. I consider these books to be of the finest production quality at par or better than most single issue monthly comics put out by heavyweights like DC, Marvel or Image Comics. Irrespective of my personal opinion of the cover artworks not doing justice to the quality of the contents inside - Regal Publishers have definitely raised the bar in terms of production quality among all the active Phantom monthly publications across the world. I truly am excited to see where they can take things from here! A little over a month ago we noticed new Phantom images appearing on Comics Kingdom merch, and speculated that KFS had a new Phantom style guide with some new designs on their clothing range. Well, we weren't far off! While there is not a new style guide as such, there is certainly a newly refined "The Phantom" logo, as well as a range of new character art that Phantom licensees and partners have been given to refresh their products. Some may argue that the logo is not far removed from previous iterations, and certainly the concept of the skull in the 'O' in 'Phantom' is not a new one. This device has been used several times before - perhaps most famously by Charlton (USA) in the late 1960s and more recently by Hermes Press (USA). However the skull completely taking the place of the 'O' is a subtle change and not something we can recall being employed before. As for the character art, according to Kerryn McCormack from Merchantwise (KFS license managers in Australia), "this new character art not only modernizes the brand, but provides more versatility in terms of art usage". A variety of 2D and 3D images also provides scope for creators to use these in a range of ways. The character art, highlighting the Phantom in a range of dynamic poses and also featuring Hero and Devil, has been designed by popular comic book cover artist Amelia Vidal. You can check out her work on her ArtStation page here. From Buenos Aires in Argentina, Amelia currently works as a Character Designer for Marvel Studios and previously as a cover artist at BOOM! Studios. Dedicated phans may also be familiar with her work as the cover artist for the Legacy of Mandrake the Magician series currently being produced by Stonebot Comic Books. Chronicle Chamber has been in touch with a range of merchandise creators from around the world and can confirm that they are looking at ways of bringing these new designs to us the phans through all manner of products. Comics Kingdom may have been the first to use them but they will be by no means the last!

Every year since 1944 in Sweden there has been a Fantomen Christmas album which makes it the longest ongoing publication of the Phantom throughout the whole world. Today I review the 2020 Fantomen Christmas album and the latest Softcover Album which is the sixth in the series. The concept originally came from Norway in 2014. 2020 has been a difficult year with many phans not being able to catch up with other like minded phans at comic conventions and with many being in lock down due to the devastating COVID-19. To hopefully ease the pain back in June, Chronicle Chamber held an open invite for any phan to chat with us via zoom. It was so successful many phans have asked for us to do the same again. This time the online Phantom catch up will be on Saturday 12 December at 9pm AEST. Bring your beverage of your choice, your device and let us try and capture the phun that usually happens. The beauty about this form of catching up is you will not need to be on location to join in. This is open to anyone. In the first of two videos, I am reviewing the 'Jungle Heroes' miniatures from the UK based Crooked Dice Games company which are currently available for order. While these are not licensed it is unmistakable Phantom with all the elements we associate with our hero. You can purchase these on their website for £8.00 (roughly $10US, $15AU, €9 & 90SEK). On a YouTube video with Glaucio Cardoso with Mythos Publishing on his Fantasma Channel, the publishing company made several announcements of their 2021 publishing plans. We have included the video below - it is in Portuguese so for those who cannot understand, the main points are: Mythos will release 4 issues of the regular magazine series named O Fantasma featuring recent daily and Sunday strips, by Tony De Paul and all the artists who came after legendary Sy Barry. The first comic will feature the crossover story by Tony Beatty with Mandrake and Lothar, Sunday 178 "Mandrake's Bon Voyage". This will be instead of the Team Fantomen stories they have been publishing. Along with the regular magazine, Mythos will also launch a Nostalgia Almanac, with stories of multiple King Features Syndicate characters including The Phantom, Mandrake, Prince Valiant, Flash Gordon, Rip Kirby, and many other characters. Following Frew Publications experiment with the Phantoms World, Mythos will also release a 200 page hardcover book of the Phantom, featuring stories published by the publisher Fratelli Spada from the 1960s and 1970s. To get an idea on on the type of stories that are likely to be published, listen to X-Band: The Phantom Podcast episode #164 as they reviewed the whole 12 issues. Mythos will also publish some Mandrake the Magician comics. A lot of phans love their past gifts and they have more planned for 2021. One planned gift will be a Phantom mask. They did not confirm which edition this gift will be offered in however they did mention that issue number 8 will also be bigger, with more pages than the normal comics. Issue number 8 will be part of the regular quarter Chronicles series featuring reprints of classic pre 1960 Lee Falk newspaper stories with art by Ray Moore and Wilson McCoy.
