I review Regal's TPB which features 6 daily newspaper stories featuring the Phantom fighting perhaps his greatest foe in Chatu - The Python! The Trade paperback titled 'The Phantom: Terror of The Python - The Chatu Saga' is a 256 page, full colour, English release with glossy inside pages. The TPB collects the bulk of The Chatu stories in chronological order along with bonus material. The book is dedicated to Paul Ryan, fitting as most of it contains his art. Some of the bonuses include an in depth interview with Tony DePaul, the writer of these stories and a touching tribute to the late Paul Ryan by Duncan Munro. One last bonus is that the book also comes with collector cards as freebies. The book comes with cover art for both the front and the back, both done by Ankit Mitra. The back cover art is his take on the iconic Paul Ryan panel from the "Death of Diana Palmer Walker" storyline. Some of those who follow the Phantom newspaper strip adventures daily would have noticed the art style looked slightly different on June 13th 2022. A closer look will also show that there was no Mike Manley credited. Tony DePaul makes a small mention of this in his blog post published on June 8th 2022. Finally: we’ve had a rough couple of weeks on the Phantom enterprise, hence you can expect to see a bit of news break by Monday, at the latest. I’d tell it if it were my news to tell, except it ain’t. Due to some personal reasons the popular daily artist has had to temporary hand over the pencils and inks to Bret Blevins. Let us stress, this is just a temporary fill in. Expect to see Mike back soon. Bret is an American comic book artist, animation storyboard artist, and painter. He is perhaps best known for his stint as the regular penciler of New Mutants and has produced covers for Moonstone Books' Phantom comic series. Here are the covers he drew. Ghosting for Mike makes sense as in the past two years Bret has also inked specific panels for Mike in times of need. He has ghosted various panels back in March to July 2020 and May to October 2021. This is the first known time he is penciling and inking the whole strip. From what we understand, Mike Manley will be back on the drawing board soon and he wish him all the best. Sydney Supanova and the LFMBEC Dinner is the highlight for many Australian phans. Some have missed the past two years of their annual religious experience due to COVID-19 but the excitement has started to catch on. Will you be in attendance? There will be phan meetings a plenty during the weekend to catch up for swapping stories, comics and other random Phantom items along with Supanova, the LFMBEC dinner plus so much more. What is to follow is our attempt of a guide for every phan who is attending the weekend. Phan Catch Ups There will be two generic phan catch ups over the weekend open for ALL phans. Friday night catch up at the Mecure Hotel pub in the Sydney CBD from 7pm-ish. Saturday lunch at a restaurant near the convention. We will be meeting at Matt Kyme 's booth at 1pm and then heading to the restaurant after. LFMBEC Dinner The LFMBEC Dinner is an all time phan phavourite. This is the highlight for many a phan of the weekend. The dinner draws phans from around the four corner of Australia and the world including Europe, USA, New Zealand and Japan. Mikael Lyck from Chronicle Chamber reviews the latest Fantomen issue - 2022/12 which features the following stories: "The Shore of Chains" by Daniel Carlsson and Anthony Spay "The Connoisseurs" by Claes Reimerthi, George Olesen & Keith Williams Cover of the year? I heard at least one from Egmont thinks so (One from Team Chronicle Chamber also agrees), it is a clean nice cover from Henrik Sahlström. Kedjornas Kust ("The Shore of Chains") by Daniel Carlsson and Anthony Spay, this is Daniel's 3rd story! It takes place during the 13th Phantoms time and reuses Ben Oakes from earlier TF stories, he is now the colonel of the Jungle Patrol and wants to rid the country of slavery. Interestingly the Neglami tribe has an appearance and are quite friendly but maybe some of the events in this story is the starting point of change into the blood thirsty tribe we see in "The Singh Brotherhood" story. "The Connoisseurs" by Claes Reimerthi, George Olesen & Keith Williams is the second story. In my opinion one of the better stories made in the aftermath of Lee Falk's death. A rich guy pays to get endangered animals to his private island where his rich friends hunt them. When the Phantom gets caught he is the new prey, but little did they know how resourceful the Phantom can be. Upcoming in the next issue is Andreas Eriksson and Ivan Rodriguez story "Femme Fatal" that was first published in Frew, also Lee Falk's last newspaper story that was finished by his widow Elizabeth Falk. Back in October 2019 and late 2021 phantastic Phantom artists Sal Velluto & Eugenio Mattozzi released A3 print sets of their covers for various conventions. Now not only is there one but this time two different sets available to purchase. The first set is a continuous of the Fantomen covers by Sal Velluto & Eugenio Mattozzi . This is the third set in this series. The second set is is a collection of Eugenio Mattozzi Moonstone covers from the mid 2000's. Each set are signed by the artists and produced on high quality 200g Bristol paper on an appealing (11x17; A3) size. This just in… Chatu, The former Wambesi prince, now known as the notorious terrorist “The Python” has been spotted in Bangalla, along with a number of his followers. It is believed that he crossed the border from Rhodia on the night of April 6th. Chatu has been sentenced to death in absentia for murder in a dozen nations. If you encounter Chatu, please… keep your distance and notify the authorities immediately, because if he spots you… you won’t have a ghost of a chance… And thus the premise for the recently released expansion pack for Games by Lyck ’s critically acclaimed 2021 release, The Phantom The Card Game is laid. Not only does the expansion pack include the brand new mission “ Terror in Mawitaan ” based on the 2003 De Paul/ Nolan Sunday story of the same name, but also 3 new side missions that can be played along with any of the adventures of the base game as well as “ Terror in Mawitaan ”. These side missions include Devil, Miss Mist and, thanks to Kickstarter reaching its stretch goal, “ Stamus Contra Malum ”. Each side mission can only be played when another side mission is not in play ie. You can’t play more than 1 side mission at the same time. These side missions provide the player with an opportunity to expand their deck with some very useful cards but it is definitely not a shoo in that you will be successful. The Miss Mist mission in particular requires a fair amount of luck, in hand with your skill, to complete. However, if you do complete it the rewards are very beneficial. I ended up with a Sarah Cartwright card which had an incredible effect on the way that I approached conflicts. Stamus Contra Malum is a Jungle Patrol themed side mission so I found playing this side mission alongside the Diana in the Jungle Patrol adventure very satisfying. Stamus Contra Malum, for those unaware, is the Latin motto of the Jungle Patrol featured in The Phantom comics and translates to “We Stand against Evil”. Completing the requirements of the side mission rewards you with a number of Jungle Patrol allies who I found invaluable when I took on The Python in “ Terror in Mawitaan ”. These allies provide the player with a number of different additional actions such us reviving exhausted or discarded cards, allowing extra cards in your hand and providing you with much needed resource tokens. The new adventure, Terror in Mawitaan , pits The Phantom against one of his most challenging and deadliest foes ever. If you are a phan of the comic you may already know who The Python is and what his future holds for The Phantom, but if this is your first introduction to him you will soon discover that he is an extremely tough and resourceful enemy. Unlike the other adventures, where there is a heavy reliance on initiating combat in order to progress, Terror in Mawitaan forces the player to think more strategically. Yes, you’ll still have your combat but you will also need to do some secret reconnaissance to take out suspicious vehicles and persons, and not every “surveil” will provide you with a lead. There is also a new enemy class- Tough- who can only take a limited amount of damage with each initiated combat. If one of these fellas turns up, you better hope you’ve got a few combat tokens up your sleeve, otherwise you will be copping a nasty injury. I had a lot of fun playing this game. I would call myself a casual gamer, particularly video games such as the Assassin's Creed series, the Arkham series and I’ve just played Far Cry 6 . For someone who was a newbie at deck building card games, I found bringing the video game mentality, where as you complete missions or tasks you level up with new skills, very useful when getting my head around the mechanics of The Phantom The Card Game. For those of you who are experienced adventure card gamers this won’t be an issue. The game also has 4 levels of difficulty. I mainly played on Normal, but as I got more confident, and my deck began to look nice and healthy I ramped up my difficulty setting on a couple of adventures, which unlocked bonus stages in the adventure that you don’t get playing on the lower difficulty levels. Overall this is a very enjoyable game that makes the player feel like they are right in the middle of one of The Phantom’s epic adventures, where every choice can have serious repercussions. With over 80 years of Phantom adventures to draw upon, I certainly hope that Games by Lyck can continue bringing out more expansion packs in the future. What adventure would you like to play out? 16th June is when the first comic from the new Wick Publications series will be released. Thanks to publisher and owner Ulrich Wick we have been given the contents of the twelve issues along with the covers. Wick Publications will release 22 Phantom stories written by the amazing team of Peter Mennigen and José María Ortiz Tafalla. The first two issues will be released at the Erlangen Comics Festival. The best thing about this series is that five of these 22 stories have never been previously published which is a huge exclusive and exciting for Phantom nerds like us. One of the five is the full comic version of "The Slaves" story which is what previously appeared in prose format in Bastei Freunde #50. These stories were being created when Bastei stopped the publication at comic issue #238 and why until now they have never been seen by the general public. The "G number" included above most likely stands for Germania or Germany. We have kept these here for the Phantom nerds who will find it interesting. For the five unpublished stories the planned issues that Ulrich has been able to identify are mentioned. Here are the 12 covers that will be featured in the series. Keen phans will notice they are drawn by Ertuğrul Edirne a Turkish cover artist currently living in Germany and originally featured on the Büyülü Çizgi Roman Turkish series. 2022 has been a great year so far for Phantom phans in India with publishers like Regal Publishers, Shakti Comics and most recently Lion - Muthu Comics publishing multiple comic books of The Phantom. This has seen a big return of the character to India. We have seen a new Tamil Phantom TPB released in January, regular issues from Shakti Comics and Regal Publishers and now the new TPB from Regal. Indian phans have been seeing a lot of good content coming out. A few other newspapers and magazines are also continuously printing The Phantom Daily and Sunday strips as well. To add to this, Phantom has also returned to the magazine Sofura in the state Assam in their local language. Assam is a state situated in the north-eastern part of India. The Assamese language is written and spoken there. Assam has always had a phanbase, particularly during the era of Indrajal and Diamond Comics. The popularity there has also led to The Phantom's publication in several newspapers, magazines, comic books as well as the creation of original stories. The children's magazine Dipok published The Phantom strip in Assamese from 1963 to 1964, making it one of the earlier publications of the phantom in India. Other magazines like Bismoi published The Phantom Sunday strip in Assamese from 1981 to 2003, while other magazines also published original stories in special issues in Assamese. Diamond Comics published three issues of The Phantom in Assamese. Meanwhile, The Assam Tribune (newspaper) has continuously been publishing The Phantom daily strip in English. Although Sofura is one of the oldest Assamese magazines, they never featured an appearance of the Phantom until now, even though they always published serialised comics created by different authors from the very beginning. They have also printed some comics from other artists from other states of India. The Phantom first appeared on the pages of Sofura in the February issue of this year, which is nearly two decades after the magazine Bismoi ceased publishing the comics. The story that they are printing is a Gold Key story "The Super Apes" written by Bill Harris with art by Bill Lignante, which was a remake of a Daily story by Lee Falk and Wilson McCoy. The story was originally published in Gold Key #7 . The story was also published in English Indrajal comics no. 34 as 'The Phantom meets The Super Apes'. In the Sofura version the name of the story is translated as "Phantom Aru Danob Bon Manuh" (ফেণ্টম আৰু দানৱ বন মানুহ in Assamese). After a brief chat with the editor of the magazine, we learned that the story is taken from the Indrajal comics reprint and acknowledgement has been made of Indrajal Comics. They are publishing the story one page per issue and have reached the 4th page in May. At that pace it will take them more than a year to finish this 23 page story. They are also planning on giving an introduction to the phantom in the July issue since they weren't able to add it in previous issues. It is indeed great to see The Phantom returning to India in many different forms. We hope all those publishers can continue publishing The Phantom, and we can enjoy the return of our hero once again becoming the number one hero to India. My name is Seuj Abir from India. I am 17 years old (at date of December 2021) and I have been a phan of the Phantom since 2013. I remember my father introducing me to the Phantom as one of the favorite characters from his childhood. From then on I have been continuously reading, collecting and learning about the Phantom and trying to introduce people to him as well. Being a phan of the Phantom, I always wanted to meet the phans all around the world. I always wanted to know how they got introduced to him, to know about their collection and why do they love him etc. That’s how I came across the Chronicle Chamber website. I found it while I was surfing the internet. I found the articles and videos there really enjoyable and informative. From then I always wanted to contact the Chronicle Chamber team. But I hesitated because of my limitation in English communication. After a long period of time I got to send a few emails to them and some of them actually got a response, and it gave me immense pleasure. When I saw the announcement of them holding a quiz on the Phantom on their website and social media, I immediately decided to join it. I was worried a little bit but was still confident. Most importantly I was happy that I will be able to meet some of my favorite peoples on the internet. I absolutely couldn’t wait for 17th December to come; I remember thinking about the quiz the whole week. I felt excited and was also scared. And finally the day came! I remember that morning I was eagerly waiting for 3.30 PM. I couldn’t even study that day and was just reading Phantom comics. I joined the meeting 10 minutes before it was supposed to start. Because of that I got to talk to them and got to provide my introduction. We also had a fun conversion about my name being butchered. At first there were five competitors on the ‘Kahoot!’ app. But only three stayed for the final game. Two of those competitors Mr. Mikael Lyck from Sweden and myself were present on the live zoom call. Another competitor Mr. Marcus played only on the Kahoot App. It is a bit disappointing that no other phans were interested to take part in that quiz. I feel like it would have been a fun experience for all of us. But I saw a lot of people playing the quiz on the app after it was made public. Probably they weren’t comfortable to take part in the quiz for more than one hour. The quizmaster and the question designer for the quiz was Mr. Stephen East. Also Mr. Jermayn Parker and Mr. Dan Fraser provided remarks between the questions too. Mr. East did a great job conducting the quiz; his efforts brought the quiz a great feel. The quiz was divided in four rounds and each round had 10 questions . So a total number of 40 questions were asked. The rounds were The Newspapers, Publishers, Chronicle Chamber and Random in a speed round. Where questions related to concern topics were asked. The numbering system was based on the answerer’s speed, meaning the quicker one gets more marks. At the first three rounds the time limit was 20 seconds and the final round it was reduced to10 seconds. It was a really interesting and I really enjoyed it. The perfectly designed questions were sometimes hard, sometimes very easy. I learned a lot of new things from the hard ones. The competition between the players were really tough and I really loved it. Between the questions I got to learn a lot of things from the remarks made. I also realized no matter what our ages are we love the character in the same way. It was really a fun conversation. They were kind enough to listen to me too. At the end I have to say that I am honored to secure the first position in the live quiz. Thanks to Chronicle Chamber for featuring me in that episode of X-Band The Phantom Podcast. It is an honor for me. Have to say I have learned a lot from this quiz not just about the Phantom but other things as well. I feel like these meet ups between phans should be hosted every year. June 2022 will see not one but two new Phantom comic series being released. More information on the series released by Wick Publications can be found here. Over the past few days Zauberstern Comics have released exciting information on their new series. As announced late last year the cover was created by artist Timo Wuerz. Now we know the release date, the contents and price. Sneak peaks of the first 6 covers have been released and you can now order all 6 issues via their website. Another option is via the Peter Poluda Medienvertrieb website. Each issue will be released every two months and will be 100+ pages in full colour and will feature a new story plus a classic story. The first issue will be released June 8th 2022. Each issue will cost €9.99 ($15Au, $10US & 105kr). Issue #1 will feature the Frew created story "The Ghost and the Monster" written by Andrew Constant and illustrated by Giancarlo Caracuzzo that appeared in Frew's Graphic Novel #2 (our review) plus "Waterman" (titled "The Secret Of The Fishman"), a Sunday story written by Lee Falk and drawn by George Olesen and Fred Fredericks. As you can see with the below image there will also be covers by popular artists Ertuğrul Edirne, Henrik Sahlström and what looks to be another cover from Timo Wuerz. It is our understanding that other Frew stories will be featured in upcoming comics. Jean Yves Mitton is one of the most famous modern day French / European artists and while he only drawing a handful of Phantom stories nearly 3 decades ago they are still being regularly republished now. The company Editions Black and White have a reputation of producing top quality hardcover collections of popular comics and now its their turn to do justice to the Phantom and Mitton's amazing work. Included in the book are various commission sketches and scans of the original artwork which will appeal to some. Jan Håfström the Swedish artist that draws and paints in the style of Wilson McCoy has original art featuring the Phantom for sale on an online auction website. Jan is famous from a Phantom point of view for his Mr Walker statue at the Stockholm train station and his partnership with the the Swedish clothes store called A Day's March.
