Edited Newspaper Stories in Today's Comic Books

For a lot of Frew readers from the 1980s and 90s, the work that Jim Shepherd and Frew did by bringing to us unedited and uncensored newspaper stories was all part of the reason why many including the team at Chronicle Chamber were and still are hooked on the Phantom. In the December Comics and News X-Band podcast in a discussion between Mikael, Dan and myself we highlighted how even today the newspaper stories get edited in comics from Frew and Egmont which is a direct 180 on

    The Phantom Returns to Hungary

Continuing the resurgence of Phantom comic publishing around the world, after a quarter of a century our favourite character has returned to the nation of Hungary. This follows the return to Spain (via Dolmen Editorial in 2018) and Brazil (via Mythos earlier this year). In the late 1980's, Swedish publisher Semic tried to expand their titles in various nations around Europe like Russia, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Most of these forays into other nations only last

X-Band: The Phantom Podcast #130 - What Would You ...?

They're the classic debates you'll hear wherever phans gather to discuss their favourite Phantom stories, characters, comics and collectibles. Do you prefer colour or black & white? Who's your favourite publisher? Who's your favourite artist? To spice up the conversation it's a Sophie’s Choice: we pose a Phantom question with only two answers. Once you've made your selection, the other is lost to you forever! We hope you enjoy the debates and leave you to ponder the questions

Introducing Don Heck: Phantom Assistant to Sy Barry

It has always been known that artists have assistants and Sy Barry was no exception and some of his assistants went on to become well known. Sy frequently used pencil artists on the strip, working primarily as an inker (although he often drew entire stories when time permitted). Some pencillers and assistants included George Olesen, Joe Giella, Bob Forgione, André LeBlanc and Rich Buckler. Sy Barry himself started off as an assistant for his brother Dan Barry on Flash Gordon.

Phantom Noir to be Released at September Gothenburg Book Fair

The Gottenburg Book Fair is one of the biggest comic (and book) conventions in Sweden and to coincide with the convention Egmont Fantomen have created a relativity new tradition of releasing an annual softcover album each year. The first softcover album was released in 2015 and for the first two years they had no official theme. 2017 we saw the first themed softcover album celebrating the Phantoms 40th Wedding Anniversary. 2018 we saw a pirate theme which also featured the fi

    The Phantom Accessorises

Beginning today in the newspaper Daily adventure strip we will start to see something different with the Phantom fitting himself out with emergency medical gear plus some extra .45 ACP clips of ammo for this adventure. We can only guess because of the extra care given pre-mission, we are going to experience an action-packed adventure coming up were he is expected to be needing medical attention and some extra ammunition throughout. Before some get too upset, please note this

Behind the Edited Panels in The Singh Brotherhood

If you have listened to the X-Band podcast interview with Hermes Press you would have heard me raising a couple of edited panels with Dan Herman from Hermes Press in their first Daily Volume reprint. It was the first time he had noticed they where edited and in talking to a few other phans, they hadn't noticed either. This article is a written explanation of the adventure we went through and I hope you enjoy this look into the history. I have looked at both the Hermes volumes

    Interview with Mimi Simon

The Phantom, together with his creator Lee Falk, has always had great reverence and respect for females. This is evident through the femme fatale gangs like the Sky Band and the Golden Circle, or via the characterisation of Diana as someone who has always been ahead of her time as an explorer, an Olympian, a nurse, a Human Rights officer for the United Nations, or even filling in as The Phantom wearing the famous costume to save the day. However, we have sadly seen all too fe

New Phantom Hardcover Comics in Spain

Last week some eagle eyed phans may have seen news that Dolmen Publishing over in Spain will be picking up a Phantom License and republishing some classic Phantom stories. Unlike Hermes and Serbia and like their Turkish counterparts they will be starting off with Sy Barry's reign in 1961. Majority of these stories have not been seen in Spain for almost 40 years. In fact apart from a hardcover reprint of stories in 2005, Spain hasn't seen any Phantom publications since the mid

X-Band: The Phantom Podcast #49 - October 2016 Comics and News

Episode 49 is bursting at the seams as the team try to fit in all of the recent Phantom News and Reviews before a bit of self indulgence in the 50th hence the 1:48 runtime. We're sure you'll enjoy it though! In this episode Jermayn takes the reigns as the boys discuss all the new merchandise that is coming out... just in time for Christmas! We have a new range of puzzles, rings, cards, clothes, diaries, journals, novels and posters to ask Santa for this Christmas, we hope y
