The Definitive Collector's Book Celebrating the Artist Who Defined The Phantom is now live to pledge and back!
The Sy Barry Book Project is an ambitious, beautifully produced collector’s book celebrating the life, art, and extraordinary career of Sy Barry, the legendary artist whose work helped define The Phantom for generations of readers around the world. From 1961 to 1994, Sy brought an unmistakable sense of realism, drama, atmosphere, and elegance to the strip. This book will tell the story behind that remarkable career—through Sy’s artwork, personal history, creative process, professional experiences, and the lasting influence of his work on The Phantom and the world of comic art.
This is being created as more than a retrospective. Our goal is to produce a high-quality, lasting visual record of Sy Barry’s artistic legacy, combining carefully researched and written material with photographs, original artwork, published examples, archival material, and stories that provide a more personal look at the artist behind the work. We are also working through the necessary licensing arrangements for copyrighted material from King Features, DC Comics, Marvel, and other relevant sources so that the finished book can present Sy’s career as fully and authentically as possible.
The BackerKit crowdfunding campaign launches September 1, 2026, and the support of our backers will play a critical role in making the book possible. Funds raised will help cover the substantial costs involved in research, writing, editing, design, image preparation and restoration, licensing, printing, packaging, and international freight and fulfillment. The project is being spearheaded by Sy’s son David Barry through Supreme Media Ventures, LLC, with the goal of creating a professionally produced collector’s edition worthy of both Sy’s work and the fans who have followed it for decades. Their current production schedule targets February 2027 for the book to be ready to ship.
