Who loves an old jungle saying? We do! We believe that every Phantom story should have an old jungle saying. The Phantom actively fosters the mystery and uncertainty around his existence and his abilities. These sayings instill fear in his immediate opponent, spread his legend, project his presence to places he can’t be, and act as a general deterrent.
Old Jungle Sayings are phrases or short sentences that have emerged through the oral histories of Bengallan tribespeople over the past five centuries. They are unique to The Phantom and set this universe and character apart from any other comic book story. They can call to mind a myriad of Phantom elements, tropes, and attributes and add to the mysteriousness surrounding him.
Lee Falk created over 100 variations in his 60+ years writing the Phantom, and now is your chance to create your own jungle saying. Fantomen is having an anniversary competition and is asking for us to create our own. You have until 17 October 2025, to enter your new jungle saying,
The editorial team will choose their top 10 entries and then print them in Fantomen 25-26/2025 where we readers get to vote for our favourite of the 10.
If you cannot use the form on the attached form, you can send them an email - Fantomen@egmont.se.
The winning new jungle saying will be printed on a tote bag, and the author will receive 10x tote bags and a free 6-month subscription to the Fantomen magazine. For those who subscribe to the magazine in 2026, they will receive the tote bag as the subscription gift.
As an extra bonus, the editorial staff will be raffling off other gifts they have found in the Fantomen Major Treasure room to those who have participated.
Back in 1986, the Fantomen magazine had a similar competition, and the winning jungle saying was "The Phantom only rests when there is peace in the world." The winner was Lena Löthman from Uppsala.
