The Red Dragons (also known as "Pirates of the Red Dragon" or "Red Dragon Pirates") are one of The Phantom's more legendary foes. Introduced in a 1979 Team Fantomen story, later republished by Frew, these villains, led by the alluring and bloodthirsty Princess Sin, would appear in a number of original stories from both publishers. For The Phantom's 90th birthday, Mad Cave Studios adds its own lore to the Red Dragons, with Phantom series writer Ray Fawkes leading the charge. The Phantom vs. The Red Dragons #1 one-shot introduces a new villain to the ever-expanding Mad Cave Studios roster while tethering itself to The Phantom 5-issue miniseries and previous one-shot The Phantom vs. The Sky Band #1. We hesitate to use the word "adaptation" on what Ray Fawkes, Lynne Yoshii, Taylor Esposito, and Juancho Velez have done here. This version of the Red Dragons has a similar ruthlessness to the older tales, but the plot is completely new. The way the story plays out, this new take embeds this band of pirates in an ever-expanding Mad Cave Studios universe for The Phantom. Do any original Red Dragon pirates appear? Princess Sin appears in this issue in her role as the villainous head of the Red Dragons. Orkhan, Waldo, and Red Dragon associate and benefactor Omar Talmash do not make an appearance here. There seems to be a stand-in for Talmash, though we won't name who, for fear of spoiling how this one-shot ties into previous Mad Cave Studios The Phantom titles. For fans looking to see Drakon, the volcanic island, sadly, is not part of this story. Are there any connections to previous Red Dragon stories? Yes! Princess Sin is in this issue, and the Red Dragons' flagship is still a destroyer-class warship. One could argue that the part of the plot that relies on framing The Phantom is a callback to when the Pirates of the Red Dragon used Waldo the Hypnotist to frame Diana Palmer. Recently a whale graveyard was found in the Indian Ocean, and some have claimed it to be the largest know graveyard in the world, including fossils of previously unknown whale species. The reason this is interesting from a Phantom's perspective is because in the very first Phantom story "The Singh Brotherhood" created by Lee Falk and Ray Moore, Diana found a whales' graveyard that was being hunted by the Singh Pirates who wanted the ambergris. While ambergris is not used as much for perfume in today's world, back in the 1930s it was costly and greatly sought after. For instance, in 1930, a 44-pound haul brought in an impressive $11,000 (roughly $172,000 adjusted for modern inflation). Even in modern days in 2021, fishermen found a 127 kg (280-pound) piece of ambergris off the coast of Yemen, valued at US$1.5 million. Above is a copy of the original story featuring Diana talking about the ambergris she found. In the story, she talked about the graveyard being off the coast of Java,known which is not too far from this recent discovery. As you can see, the graveyard found by the Chinese scientists is off the coast of Perth, Western Australia, but due north of Australia is Java, which is only a few sailing days away. The Fantomet: Legenden vender tilbage series is a hardcore album series from Danish publisher E-Voke that started in 2024 and will now be continuing into 2027. While exact details on the issues are still under wraps to be released later, we are able to piece together some details. Some of the stories included will be the following: "Burnt Offering" written by Claes Reimerthi, with art by Heiner Bade (originally published by Fantomen 2-3/2012 and Frew #1622) "Sister Steelfist" written by Tony DePaul, with art by César Spadari (originally published by Fantomen 10/2011 and Frew #1598) "Ughland" the 151st Phantom daily story written by Lee Falk and drawn by Sy Barry. There will also be a second Mandrake the Magician story drawn by Andre LeBlanc, who worked as an assistant for Sy Barry from the mid-1970s to the 1990s. Below you can see the two covers the publishers have teased. The cover of the Phantom dressed as a nun is by Hans Lindahl and was first used for Fantomen 2-3/2012. The other cover features artwork by Heiner Bade, but we are unsure if this is a new artwork piece created by Bade before his passing or if it has been computer-generated or manipulated. At Chronicle Chamber, we've been wondering if Comics Kingdom had plans for more Phantom 2040: A New Shadow, especially as the series is nearing its 20-episode conclusion. Quite a bit of world-building has been woven into this series by writers Alex Segura and Michael Moreci, with a hauntingly beautiful dystopian ambiance from artists John Amor and George Kambadais. Phantom 2040: A New Shadow art by John Amor For starters, we were introduced to a brand-new member of The Phantom family in Carlos Oserio, with appearances by classic TV series favorites like Kit Walker Jr., DVL, Sagan Cruz, and others. The villainous tech magnate Charles Tyrus had his own transformation, and we learned more about the Ghost Jungle's importance to this nightmarish 2040 landscape. Plus, characters like Mel and the ever-mysterious Fitzroy gave us so much to ponder between episode releases on ComicsKingdom.com. With each episode release, it seemed like there were even more questions left unanswered. It'd make sense to keep the momentum going with new stories, wouldn't it? Comics Kingdom made it official by announcing season 2 of Phantom 2040: A New Shadow on social media platforms like Facebook, X, and Instagram. While the promo reel has been removed from Instagram, it's still available to view on X. Readers can also view the promo for the season 1 finale on Youtube: Details about a release schedule for season 2 are nonexistent at the time of this article. It's fair to say that we might see some of the same creative team return, as writer Alex Segura has been commenting on some of the main Comics Kingdom's vague posting about season 2 leading up to the announcement in the official Comics Kingdom Discord. Every so often we get a fan question about some random fact or first time something happened in a Phantom story. We explore a question about when the button and light were first used at the Jungle Patrol in a Phantom story. Daily adventure story #74: The Swamp Rats Written by Lee Falk and drawn by Wilson McCoy. In this story, the button to light the lamp light was only used to signify an emergency. Before this, the Colonel would check the safe everyday if there was a message from the Unknown Commander. The other negative was that it could be weeks before the Phantom would check the safe for messages from the Jungle Patrol. Obviously, this had limitations, likely why Lee Falk introduced the lamp. Daily adventure story #77: The Monkey Mail Written by Lee Falk and drawn by Wilson McCoy. Lee Falk changed the system slightly in the 1960 story where the lamp was used to signal any messages from the Unknown Commander instead of emergency messages, like shown in the "Swamp Rats" storyline. However, what about when the Jungle Patrol needs to communicate with the Unknown Commander? Daily adventure story #82: The Slave Market of Mucar Written by Lee Falk and drawn by Sy Barry. Lee Falk obviously realised the potential problem, hence why he created an emergency solution with homing pigeons. It was just a temporary solution. Daily adventure story #90: The Bad Ones Written by Lee Falk and drawn by Sy Barry. The first time that the lamp light and button were used on both ends of the Unknown Commander's safe was in 1965. Now, there is no delay of the Phantom checking the mail at Jungle Patrol headquarters. However, the problem is still there: if the Phantom is outside of Bangalla on a mission or a family holiday, what happens next? This is a problem that is still not solved by Tony DePaul who has changed the Unknown Commanders office at headquarters. Does he still use the lamp trick with the renovations? Something a little different, as today we review the recently remastered in 4K from a 35mm original camera negative by Kino Lorber, a boutique Blu-ray distributor. This new edition comes in both 4KUHD (two-disc) and Blu-ray (single disc) and can be purchased at the Kino Lorber website. Along with a new master of the film, each set (either two-disc or single) comes with audio commentary from director Simon Wincer, a new interview with star Billy Zane, and an interview with film composer David Newman. A trailer is also included. At Chronicle Chamber, we picked up a copy for review. Watch or listen to our video review, and read on for our impressions of the new master, as well as special feature highlights. The New Master One of the elements to this film that Simon Wincer frequently comes back to in his audio commentary is the lighting, and it’s for good reason. This new edition of The Phantom is beautiful. Compared to previous releases, the color and visuals are crisp, clean, and warm. There was a decision to use natural lighting as opposed to filters during production, and it pays off nicely. In outdoor adventure sequences, the natural lighting makes the action feel real and believable. In closed settings, such as Xander Drax and Diana Palmer’s introduction scene early on in the film, a functional, expository sequence feels glamorous and stunning. When Dave Palmer agrees to send his niece, Diana, on a quest during this sequence, this new master captures the warmth and ornate decor of the art deco style of the 1930s. The sound is also markedly better than previous editions, making for an overall enjoyable rewatch that feels closer to what audiences experienced in theaters 30 years ago. The Special Features Director Simon Wincer’s Audio Commentary Audio commentaries can be hit or miss with many Bluray and 4KUHD releases, even from boutique companies. The Simon Wincer commentary included with this new edition of The Phantom lands right in the middle. It’s not necessarily exciting, but it’s not the worst commentary either. Wincer does highlight some of the elements and motifs he was going for, and he does spend a great deal of time talking about the use of natural lighting versus filtering. For Phantom fans looking for answers to decisions this adaptation makes, like why Guran was changed into a child helper of The Phantom or why a skeleton strangles a grave robber to death, there aren’t any answers here. The quality of the audio commentary, at times, is also suspect. Right off the bat, there’s a noticeable audio lag, as if this was recorded over Zoom or some other online meeting software. That’s a bit of a disappointment. Billy Zane Interview: “Kismet in the Jungle” Thirty years after the release of the film, Billy Zane is a master craftsman at discussing The Phantom film. Many of the ideas and motifs he touches upon in this new interview have been covered elsewhere in talks at Supanova Con and other interviews. Zane highlights his love of the character stemming from collecting Frew Comics on visits to Australia and notes that, in his performance, he was trying to embody the classic adventure films of classic Hollywood from the likes of Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, John Wayne, and others. This interview has the highest production values to it, and for fans looking to see Zane wax poetic about all things The Phantom, it’s a good interview. David Newman Interview: “Slam Evil: Scoring The Phantom” David Newman is a phenomenal composer, and to see him among the interviews included in this new release is something out of a dream for a huge fan of film scores (such as myself). This interview was conducted over Zoom or some other type of online meeting software, so the production value is a stark difference compared to Zane’s interview. For film score enthusiasts, the soundtrack to The Phantom is a hidden gem. It’s fast, rhythmic, complicated, and powerful. For Newman, putting this score together was mostly done on instinct and was something akin to a nightmare, which is unfortunate to learn. In the interview, Newman states that scoring The Phantom was a last-minute rush job that compiled hours and hours of work over a very short period, often with little to no sleep. While Newman doesn’t have great memories of working on The Phantom, it’s the film in his IMDB that he worked the hardest on. For those looking to learn a little about what’s buried in the beat and rhythm of the soundtrack, Newman speaks to this. For Those Who Came In Late… What’s the verdict? For Phantom “phans” who want to revisit this adaptation or film fans looking to tap into a little 90s nostalgia, this new master is absolutely stunning and the best version of The Phantom commercially available. For collectors who love to dive deep into special features and bonus content included in boutique collections like these, it’s a bit of a miss. Apart from the Billy Zane interview, the other two special features feel hastily compiled to pad the set, and it’s not worth the spend if you’re primarily looking to learn more about the production and behind-the-scenes of The Phantom. Verdict: Buy it for the film, not the special features.

In Phantom 2040: A New Shadow Episode 19, we're at the penultimate episode for this storyline. The wild, eye-catching neons are back, and there are a couple of surprising panels that play with light and color in this episode that delicately balances story with action. Tyrus, who has been donning the Anti-Phantom suit for several episodes now, grows only more monstrous under Rebecca Madison's control, which apparently includes growing an extra pair of eyes. While we still don't know much about Fitzroy, we're given some clues as to who she might be.
