Hermes Press To Publish New Phantom Series
Hermes Press, the folks behind the brilliant hardcoverr newspaper strip, Gold Kep,Charlton etc, reprints have announced they will be launching a brand new, original Phantom comic series starting this September. The series will be written by Peter David, one of the finest writers in comics, with art by Phantom artist Sal Velluto.
Hermes has released an official statement about the series with Publisher Daniel Herman saying “When we asked King Features to allow us to build on the mythos of The Phantom we were clear that we wanted to expand the canon of one of comics’ greatest legends by embracing the character and his history, and by building on it. We want to create new stories that Lee Falk would be proud of!”
The statement goes on to say
…Peter David was the obvious choice [as writer] as he is a well known fan of the strip and understands its mythos. David has written extensively for comic books for over twenty-five years, as well as for television and film. He is currently hard at work creating a story arc that fans won’t want to miss.
David pointed out that, “I’ve been a huge Phantom fan for years, and even had the chance to work on him for DC many years ago. I’m thrilled that Daniel approached me about this series and I’m taking the opportunity to produce a story I’ve literally been thinking about for a couple of decades. I’m very much looking forward to seeing Sal’s pencils and putting the book out there for the fans.”
Velluto is also hard at work crafting the art for issue #1. “This will be a classic story that will attract both fans and those who have yet to enjoy the adventures of The Phantom,” he commented.
The first issue will be solicited in the August edition of Previews which should be at comic stores soon, if no already, so be sure to let the folks at your LCS know you want a copy put aside.
However, there is a slight bitter taste to this news (or silver lining, depending on your perspective). The fact that Hermes is now releasing a Phantom series suggests the Ghost Who Walks will no longer be walking through the pages of Dynamite Entertainment’s books. Thus, we will most likely never see a follow up to Last Phantom or a Phantom spin-off from Kings Watch. This, especially in regards to King Watch, is a huge shame. However, perhaps this is some kind of karma seeing how DE pulled the Phantom away from Moonstone a few years back. At the moment, that seems likely.
As we wait to see what the new series will be like, Hermes has released a beautiful promotional poster by Velluto which you can see below.
Thanks to Andreas for this news.
