In a recent interview with website ICv2, Dynamite Entertainment CEO Nick Barrucci hinted at what may be the next series to feature the Phantom from the publisher behind the contoversial The Last Phantom.
In the interview in which Barrucci discusses everything from DE’s sales to the companies use of variant covers, he made the following comment when talking about DE’s Flash Gordon series:
We’ve been really happy with Flash Gordon. We’re going to be launching the equivalent of The Defenders of the Earth crossover. We’re going to have the three main King Features characters. We’re expanding on the mythos, so we’re not going to call it that, but having the three main characters is definitely the way to go.
Exactly who the “three main King Features characters” are hasn’t been said but seeing that the forthcoming series is likened to DOTE there’s a good chance the Phantom, and possibly Mandrake, will appear. This seems even more likely as a second series featuring the Phantom has already been announced and it’s been rumoured for a while that DE picked up the rights to Mandrake.
When the series is due for release has not been stated and any other details are pretty sparse. However, as soon as any more news comes to light you can be sure to find it here on CC.
UPDATE: The Defenders of the the Earth have appeared in all but name in a recent issue of DE’s Flash Gordon comic. Set during World War II issue #4 of the series shows both the Phantom and Mandrake battling villains (see below for a scan). While it isn’t a confirmation of an actual DOTE series, it IS comfirmation that DE plans to do something with the characters. Given that Barrucci says DE will be launching “the equivalent” of a DOTE cross over it seems safe to assume he’s refering to a forthcoming limited/ mini series. Also, on DE’s forums when a poster asked if DE was planning a DOTE series a Dynamite representative replied “stay tuned.” So it looks that at some point in the future we’ll see a DOTE or DOTE-like series from Dynamite. We’ll keep you posted on future developments..
